This is 1 of the 3 amazing scenic views (絶景) not to miss according to the Japanese. I did 2 last November and this time staying in Shin-osaka, I thought I should not miss the last one this time. I checked out the route but found that the options were either expensive, schedule is not good, or takes time. Train/Bus option is cheapest but schedule is very limited and it will be very rush if you make it a day trip. Hence, I ended up taking a day tour which included lunch. The cost is almost the same as the cost of taking train. I covered 2 other areas (Funaya and Miyama thatched huts) and included all other admission costs. If you want to explore and enjoy more, it's probably better to stay for a night around that area.
It was a good sunny day when I went. It's better view from the observatory. There is option of ropeway cable car and chair-lift. Chair-lift is not to be missed (recommended by the locals) unless you are scare of height. Not only is it not limited by the schedule (unlike the ropeway has a schedule of every 20 min, I think), it's an awesome view and experience going up or coming down. There is cafe, souvenir shop, and some amusement park facility but in a smaller scale. Basically you won't spend to much time up there. Time is probably better to go around the ground level shops and walking towards the narrow strip of land you see from the observatory (hill top).

It's one of the three most famous scenic spots in Japan and attracts many tourists from home and abroad.
However, it's not a scenic spot that is crowded even on holidays. If anything, the overwhelming majority of tourists enjoy the view from the heights of Amanohashidate Viewland, etc. This scenic spot is only a series of sandy beaches and pine forests, so it is not recommended to expect an element of entertainment. It may be a great place to stroll while learning about the geology of a place that has been built up over a long period of time.
Because it's a scenic area, conservation efforts are regularly undertaken, and from that standpoint, most of the paths are not paved, except for a few facilities such as restrooms. Therefore, on rainy days (or the day after), many of the paths become muddy and puddles form. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing. Also, be careful not to let your hat or other items get blown away on windy days. Also, no vehicles other than special vehicles are allowed to enter Amanohashidate.
Even so, the lush pine forests provide a good amount of shade from the sun, so even in summer, you can enjoy a walk without feeling too hot. It is a good place to spend a relaxing time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Since the southern and northern ends of the trail are about 2 km apart, there are benches along the way for visitors to take a rest.

Far from the downtown, a peaceful and relaxing place. If you are looking for an refreshing trip, this would be an option.
Although the day I visit was raining, still is a nice place to go.
Suggest to take the cruise or walk on the pathway as an experience in visiting this place.
1 night stay would be nice if you want to enjoy Onsen.

I am going to be in Kyoto for 6 days from 2nd to 8th October and wish to take the train to Amanohashidate for a day. What is the earliest time I can take this train and how should I structure my day to get the best experience?
Thank you.

Hi! I just googled Kyoto Station to Amanohashidate Station and see a train for 8:36 a.m. on the JR line. It might vary a little, and there are bus options too. Regardless of which you take, the bus will bring you to Amanohashidate Station. From there, if I were you, I would walk to the land bridge / beach (which is accessible by crossing the street from the station and cutting through a beautiful antique shop, or by leaving the station and going right, and taking a sharp left at the light), stopping at the temple (you can't miss it), and in the antique shop and omiyage shops along the way.
I have walked the land bridge and biked it, both were lovely. You can easily rent bikes there. I recommend taking your time and relaxing on the land bridge. The water is clear, the air is so clean, and the paths are shaded and peaceful.
For lunch, there are several Japanese cafes back on the main road near the station, as well as a delicious sandwich place called JuuJuu Bread, which is right next to the train station.
After lunch, if you walk on the street behind the train station, you can take a cable lift up to "Viewland" and get a gorgeous view of the land bridge from above. There are attractions and a restaurant up there, as well. My advice is "take your time." It is a fairly small area, so you will have time to see everything and really take it in. It is a perfect day trip from Kyoto, in my opinion! Have a great time. :)

May I know what it a decent time to spend at Amanohashidate? We will be there 1 December and will be coming from Kyoto, so that will take 2 hours to travel there with a private charter bus.
I was hoping to combine with Miyama thatched houses village with their annual water spraying event at 1330.
08:00AM: Depart Kyoto Hotel
10:00AM: arrive Amanohashidate
11:15AM: depart Amanohashidate
12:45PM: arrive Miyama, then have lunch
13:30PM: Water spray
14:15PM: depart Miyama
16:00PM: arrive Kyoto Hotel
Do you this itinerary is feasible or we seem to be spending more time travelling?
Or should I skip Miyama and just concentrate on Amanohasidate and maybe pop over to Ine?
Thank you so much in advance

I would strongly agree with above suggestion. Both of me and my wife only realized that we got limited time (max. 2 hours) during our trip last May as we departed quite late from Kyoto (approx. 10:30 am). The area is really beautiful and we both wish could spend more time over there.
My suggestion is departing from Kyoto as early as possible and spend more time in Amanohashidate, at least 3 hours (more if you like the area). However, kindly note Amanohashidate will be quite cold during winter. It was cloudy, windy, rainy and quite cold during our visit end of last May.
Therefore, I suggest you to consider how long you would want to spend time outdoor. The scenery during ferry crossing is also something I would like to recommend. I regret that we didn't spend more time as we both would like to ride a bicycle during our visit in the area.

Is it possible to bike to the other side and then take the ferry back? Will they bring back the bike
Some of them provide this service. There is a tourists' office at the train station. You can ask them for the address. of these shops. Enjoy!
