A group of us from a local archaeological society made a group visit to this medieval castle ruin. We had a guided tour with a senior EH curator which set out the curious history of this 'slightly post-Norman' castle which was very informative, interesting and well-pitched for a historically informed group.
We thought this was a highly successful visit to a most interesting ancient monument.

This a gem to visit, really interesting with lots of historic information and amazing views. The grassy picnic area is lovely and the remains of the castle are impressive, it's a great way to spend an hour or two. The member of staff was also lovely, helpful and informative.

The free with entry audio guide really made this visit. Do NOT get stung for the overpriced and unnecessary guidebook which they try to offer you first of all - as ever with English Heritage the entry price for what is mainly a ruin is excessive. Annual membership is probably the better option if you have time and energy to visit multiple EH locations over 12 months.

However I had no idea that this was once such an extensive castle, with a really interesting and exciting history of murder, locked up wives and profligate sons. The chapel with its rare medieval frescos, tombs of the Hungerfords and a creepy crypt is the highlight. I would recommend the nearby really historic George at Norton St Philip as great stop for refreshments.

It only remains three towers, the church and the priest house, but the church and the crypt are worth the visit. I recommend taking the audio guide as it gives you some hints on the history of the castle, and mainly the murders and imprisonment happened there.

Very interesting visit if you are visiting Bradford-on-Avon or Westwood Manor House.

Very quiet and picturesque, there was more castle standing than expected and lots of slightly grisly history. Well researched and friendly staff

This is an interesting little castle in a very picturesque setting. Signage is informative but not intrusive, and there’s plenty to fill a good hour

On arrival I thought we were just going to have a quick walk around some ruins, but it turned out that the castle has an interesting history and there is quite a bit to see. I found the crypt quite spooky and we learned about the darker aspects of the castle's history such as the murders that took place. We were on a tight schedule so only had time to read the displays, if we had more time we would have used the audio guides that are included in the entrance fee.

An interesting place to walk around and enjoy the tranquility. We were supplied audio devices to listen at certain points to the history of the castle which were very easy to operate. The chapel was particularly fascinating, as was the Priest's house. Served by Eleanor when booking in, and later when I decided to sign up but also make some purchases from the shop. She was friendly and gave us all the information we needed to enjoy our visit. She also went through the membership vey clearly with me. A place I will visit again and again as not too far from where I live, and very close to a NT property (member with them too), plus love popping into Bradford-on-Avon that is also on the doorstep. 10/10

At first, it looked just like ruins and we were disappointed but the extremely friendly gentleman on the front desk gave us a lot of information and we even got a free audio tour.

The audio tour made it so worthwhile. The price is not expensive to start with but the free audio tour offered so much information and gave such a depth of knowledge that you can really imagine yourself at the castle during its heyday.

Alongside the ruins are the chapel, crypt and Priest's House that we originally missed.

This turned out to be a fantastic attraction and well worth a visit for all group types and sizes.

As an English heritage member and with a love of old castle ruins, my partner and I came up to visit on our week off. Due to covid rules we had to pre book but it was worth it. We had a couple of sunny hours marvelling over the ruins before the heavens opened up. It is a fantastic ruined castle with a chapel with creepy tooms and a crypt next to it. Also a shop selling gifts and snacks where you check in. You have to drive through the castle and park at other end then walk back to shop to check in. A little building that is a museum and some toilets. Very picturesque and really enjoyed it.
