We wanted to get a different experience on our cruise for our kids ages 9, 11, and 3. The Cocoa estate was beautiful and in the middle of the rainforest. Our guide was very informative. He explained the process of growing the cocoa plant to the harvest, fermenting, drying process. We sampled the cocoa in its fruit form, dried form, and final product. Was very education and exactly what we were looking for as a break from the beaches.

The tour was fascinating and we learned a lot about cocoa and how it is made, as well as seeing some other things such as coffee beans and guava trees. Would recommend 💯

We had sent an email, as well, regarding if there were enough people for a tour. We got an email back saying just to show up at the gate at the right time. It was a little difficult to find, and some locals were not even aware of a cocoa plantation nearby. When we arrived, with a few minutes to spare, there were about a dozen others, so no problem. The tour took an hour or hour and a half, samples of fruits were given, along with instruction, in the gazebo shown in the picture. After the tour (which was very informative and interesting, we thought, we had samples of 3 kinds of chocolate. I ended up buying one bar, and a ball of baking chocolate. As a plus, the owner happened to be there the same day, so he threw in some other knowledge. I thought it was a wonderful day and well worth the entry fee.

Check opening times and days for visit. Good if you can go individually. Excellent and informative walk around a showcase of Caribbean fruits and plants. Site is off-road but accessible

We made our own way to the estate on a Friday without knowing for sure that there would be a tour – they didn’t reply to our e-mail attempt to book a place. But the tour was very good and worth the $120TT per person fee. Our guides, Harry and Browne, were very informative and engaging and worked well as a team – we learnt a lot about the process of making chocolate (how many people know where it comes from?). We also, by chance, met the owner who was visiting from Sweden and gained an insight into the commercial aspects. Overall very informative and enjoyable – and the chocolate was exceptionally good………….

Harry and Browne were interesting and engaging guides to the fascinating estate. Showing off all the different plants that are involved in the production of chocolate and demonstrating the intensive labour involved in growing, picking and processing the cocoa pods.
Plucking leaves and berries and pods from various plants they encouraged us to nibble and savour the flavours.
The $120TT tour is one hour long and starts promptly at the estate gates at 11 o'clock on Friday mornings. The road to the estate is steep and rough, so don't make the trip unless you're booked onto a tour - you can do that on the email on their website.
As well as raw cocoa beans, herbs, coffee berries and anything else you can graze on, there's a sample of their award winning chocolate to taste at the end of the tour.

Thank you for your review! We always strive to keep our visitors to the estate fully informed as to all activities. I would just like to make one correction which refers to the land preparation before the planting of the cocoa trees. We always clear the land manually using only machetes and then we would gather all the debris from the clearing and do a controlled burning. We do not by any means deliberately burn the forest as this would be detrimental to the natural eko-system.

We thought it would be great to have one of the guys who actually works the farm to do the tour. Wrong. He was monotone, providing only basic information. Indifferent to answering questions. Did he really not know or was he just not bored to answer? Really disappointing. Waste of money.

exactly what lazytravelerTacoma22 said. my first time but yet was grossly disappointed. in addition 1. the tour is only on Fridays and the reason is low traffic from HOTELS! SO LOCALS DONT COUNT. 2. it appears as its 1 guide for the entire day so time gaps occur hence not starting on the time prescribed 3. the chocolates they claim are cheaper by them and not at supermarkets, that is up for debate 4. on the packaging of the chocolates it claims a unique guide to the estate and its practices in developing BUT THAT WAS NOT IN THE TOUR, WHAT IS THE POINT 5. the one thing that has it going is the ambience

Dear Visitor,
It is unfortunate that you were obviously not pleased with you Tobago Cocoa Estate visit. We strive to deliver the best possible experience to all our visitors!
I would like to briefly addressed your concerns:
1. Tobago is experiencing low arrivals to the island at the moment hence the reason the minimum numbers per tour (10) and one tour day per week during the tourist season (December through April). Four years ago we were offering tours on a daily basis.
2.We have only one guide who is also the Estate caretaker and familiar with the surroundings. In the event of increased capacity we do have other guides we can hire. The tour time is 11:00am, however, unforeseen circumstances can cause delays. What actually cased the late start of your tour was the late arrival of British Travel writers on a familiarization trip to Tobago invited by the Tobago House of Assembly, Department of Tourism.
3.We do not claim to sell “cheaper” chocolates at the estate and can only offer sale of our chocolates on tour days. You can find our products at selected outlets throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Due to climate change issues we have seen a decline in cocoa production which directly affects or production capacity and stocks. We are hoping for a better crop in 2020!
5. At present we are the only cocoa estate in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to be granted full organic certification by USDA and EU.
We hope you will choose to visit our beautiful island again in the future.
Welcome!

Two of us recently did this Friday morning tour. It costs 90TT, which is about $13 US. The tour is very short - in time and distance. The guide was less-than-enthusiastic and seemed bored. You basically walk a trail around some of the orchards and the guide points out different plants and describes the cacao harvesting, etc. He takes questions, which was good because he wasn't very good at explaining things. After about 20 minutes of a very slow walk, you get to a gazebo where you get to eat the flesh of the cacao bean. We stayed there way too long. And then you walk slow back to the main area where you spend a few minutes looking at the area where the beans are dried. After that they give you a few chocolate samples and you can buy the chocolate. FYI - The chocolate is VERY EXPENSIVE. For a regular sized bar, it costs $17 US. It was an ok tour, but not worth the price for us. You could easily do the tour in 30 minutes max.

We contacted you to try and arrange a tour but you didn't respond. You provide a phone number on the website, but when you call it, it tells you to e-mail you to ask about a tour. I sent you an e-mail via your contact form to ask if we could join your tour on Friday 20th April (as you state that tours are on Fridays at 11am), but you never replied. Why provide a phone number when you aren't going to answer it? And why tell people to e-mail you when you don't respond to e-mails?
