From our Stari Podrum Hotel, we walked 100 m S through the back ruins of the 15th C castle by Nikola Ilok, to the main rear entrance of the 18th C Castle Odescalchi. At the 1st floor office, we paid 40 Hrk ($6) for 2 seniors, then proceeded through the 5 main parts of the museum on floors 1, 2 and the attic. It begins with archeological finds from the Panonija Region(Danube/Drava/Suva river plain) to include Mastodon bones, pre Roman and Roman sites. Then period rooms and displays of the 171 year (1526-1697) Ottoman Rule, followed by Pope Innocent XI (beginning of Odescalchi Rule that lasted 250 years) of the Hapsburgs/Austrian-Hungary Empire, and ending with WWI and WWII. The attic preserved the local culture with farming tools, household equipment and costumes. Excellent museum for 2 hour visit.
Later at our hotel, we toured this Castle’s wine cellar costing 40 kn each and included a glass of wine and a basket of “salty buns”. The 1st 50 m was built in the 18th C and faced with 2,000 liter wine-aging barrels. The 2nd 50 m was from the 15th C and located under this castle with its direct access closed off. It contained their exclusive moss covered aged collection with bottles costing $300-$1,500 each.

This local community museum near the Danube is off the tourist path, but was included in a Viking River tour and was a modest hidden gem. Housed in a small 18th century castle home, it has rooms and floors divided by centuries, from Romans, to 19th and 20th century artifacts up to the Communist and Balkan war periods. Well-labeled exhibits include English

Toured the museum and local area of Osijek and Vukovar while on a Viking River Cruise. This museum at Ilok is extremely well done. Presentations are crisp, uncrowded, and germane. The tour moved at a rapid pace, so I would very much like to revisit and spend more time here.

We stopped here because my friends great grandmother is from Ilok. The staff at the museum was very kind, and able to find a book with her name and information in it. We toured the museum and loved learning about the history of this area. Definitely worth the stop!

I often enjoy a small local history museum to a large, comprehensive museum. This museum covers a lot of the local history and will give you a good understanding of the place and the forces that have shaped it.

Sycamores by the water with the palace above— museum’s third floor depicts how people lived. The winery next door was a pleasant break. Worth a visit.
