Rainy, quite, beautiful

Stopped by when passing for a walk with the dog - easy parking, easy path, lovely view and surroundings. Coffee and delicious cake at the little cafe on the way out - perfect.

My happy place
jul. 2021
When I'm feeling blue, I always come to visit this place for a quiet moment or some fresh air. Gorgeous woodland and lakes, perfect for fixing a sad mood. Hopefully it stays quiet for the long term, love this place so much:)

Lovely place but be careful where you park
mai 2021 • Familie
Lovely place to walk but be careful where you park!! I parked on the side of the road as the car park was full and got a parking ticket!!! Something to do with a clear way?? I didn’t know what this was and as there were no lines and I wasn’t causing an obstruction I appealed but still had to pay. Took the shine off a lovely day so wanted to warn others.

Car Parking at Shearwater
jun. 2021
I parked last week on the verge opposite the full car park. On my return, an hour later approximately 8 cars had parking tickets including me. The reason given is that it was a red route clearway. I did not see any signs prohibiting parking here and obviously nor did anyone else. I appealed but this was rejected. Part of the reason given is that parking on the verge damages the wildlife and causes obstructions to other vehicles and the residents who live in the area.
The only other vehicles in the area are other parked cars and there is not one house (residents home) near where most of the vehicles are parked alongside the lake opposite the car park.
It's just a blatant money-spinner by Wiltshire County Council who should be ashamed of themselves. I expect it's a jumped-up CEO hitting his parking ticket target against the unsuspecting public. I parked on Friday 4th June 2021

Visit during COVID easings
mai 2021 • Familie
Lovely flat pathed walks around the edge of a large lake. No swimming allowed, saw some huge fish in there so I wouldn't get in if you paid me anyways! Scattered metal benches which are cold to sit on. Disappointed at the car parking situation. Limited places and I saw more than one car with a parking ticket when I couldn't see a reason why. Good for dog walkers.

Confusing.

Just read on here today that you are not allowed to park on the approach road. We didn't see any signposts to that effect and parked happily on the road as did everyone else with no trouble. Not quite sure why the car park is closed though? Sign said coronavirus restrictions but we presumed this was historic and they'd just not got round to taking sign down. There were barriers over the walk around the lake but everyone seemed undeterred and had simply walked around them so we did too. The cafe was open so that was nice but slightly confused as to why the loos were closed. Longleat maybe need to have another look at the government website.

All still closed.
apr. 2021 • Alene
Just to confirm, following a drive by, that the car parks at both Sheer water and Heavens Gate, the lake and all associated woodlands are still closed. The woodlands are all part of the Longleat estate and open at their discretion. There is no general right of access. The road alongside the lake is a clearway and cars parked at the roadside are liable to be fined and very frequently are! Until such time as the estate reopens the sites (which is unlikely if people continue to flaunt the current restrictions) it is best to avoid traveling on "the chance" it might be open.

Lake and forest paths closed as well as car park
apr. 2021
Whilst I knew the car park was currently closed, I was very surprised to see the lakeside and forest walks were also closed off today ( 27th April).

I had e-mailed Longleat Estates a few days ago to ask about the car park and received a reply "In accordance with government guidelines and with people’s safety still top of mind there are concerns about the huge influx of people given not all amenities have reopened yet and this in turn doesn’t provide a safe situation and for the time being will remained closed until further notice." ( I had not realised this referred to the lake and forest as well as the car park)

I am personally bemused by this given I can visit National Trust gardens, and indoor shopping malls and associated car parks.... Let's hope it all re-opens again soon

A let down
apr. 2021 • Alene
Where I understand the current issue of green-blue algae is harmful for dogs the lake main car park should not be locked and also to not to have barriers across the entrance to the lake private road.
Surely a few notices could be put up warning dog owners that dogs must be kept on leads and the dangers of the algae explained so that a dog walker can make a decision. This way it will not spoil this lovely lake for other users.
The road outside the lake has no stopping signs which is also tough despite cars still parking there.
I think especially after lockdown this lake and car park should be fully open. If notices are put up there can be no blame or law suit on Longleat!
