Interesting place to visit if you have alternative source of information about the site - very little information on site.

Still under excavation. Entering, we find the Basilica of Agios Titos, partially destroyed, but the 3 apses remain standing. Very well preserved instead the Odeon with some bleachers and the stalls. Very interesting is the wall on which are engraved the "laws of Gortina" dating back to 500 BC that define the rights of citizens, very liberal laws for that time.

The archaeological site of Old Gortyn is located close to the road and has enough space to park the car at the door, since it does not have too many visitors.
It opens every day from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the summer months and general admission costs 4 euros. We dedicate an hour to the visit. The terrain is uneven and you have to climb some steps, so it is a difficult visit for people with reduced mobility.
The most interesting elements of the visit are the Roman odeon from the 2nd century, behind which are the famous “Laws of Gortyn”, a legislative body written in stone in the 5th century BC, and which is the oldest known. preserved of this type. The stone plates are preserved behind fences that allow them to be observed, in a covered space. The other great center of interest is the ancient basilica of Saint Titus, patron saint of Crete, who introduced Christianity to the island, and who was bishop of this city; The basilica is in ruins, but its three naves and the dimensions of its floor can still be distinguished; it seems that it was built in the 6th century. There are more interesting places, but they are less striking. This settlement has its origins in the Neolithic, and during Roman rule it was the capital of Crete.
It is a recommended visit for history and archeology fans, and it is very close to the Minoan palace of Phaistos, so it is easy to combine both visits. The site staff was very kind and friendly to us. During our visit we did not meet other travelers.

Very little appreciated site... no panel to explain what you see! Really a shame. Along the road to get there, we had to rely only on Google Maps because it had absolutely no signs. If only there was more care in the explanation and information, everything would be more beautiful and more usable. The QR code you see on the site has a map that is, to say the least, impossible to decipher. It's a shame because it's worth a visit!

I came across the site quite by chance and drove there spontaneously. There are enough parking spaces, but the signage could be improved (I drove past it first).
I arrived and the friendly staff pointed out the combined ticket for the Archaeological Museum, which is not far away and provides even more information (it's worth a visit!).
In the site itself, unfortunately, there is not much information other than the map that you can scan at the entrance. Proper information boards would offer absolute added value here and improve the whole thing even more.

Certainly, the paid site is not the largest, but still these stones where the laws written around 300 BC are engraved are worth the visit and a form of respect for the organization of the time. The Gortyn code is impressive under its ugly protective cap. It is written in Dorian I believe and in boustrophedon (a term I learned on site) which means that if the first sentence is written from right to left (first writing of Greek) the following sentence is from left to right and so right now.
Not far away, behind the fences, excavations are still underway. This suggests some great discoveries.
The Messara Museum has been open since this summer after several years of closure.

Absolute waste of time. We drove two hours to get to this site only to find that the site was a dilapidated mess. Although advertised as wheelchair accessible, this ‘accessibility’ consisted of several rotting wooden ramps. Due to the complete lack of signposts and the awful map, we were only able to locate 2 of the advertised points of interest. Fortunately the palace of Phaestos was nearby and is infinitely better with actual information about the site.

It's not worth visiting. You can only see some stones here. The sheet you receive shows some other old things nearby. Unfortunately we couldn't go here because it is a 10-minute walk and we couldn't make it by bus.

Never on tuesday to be exact. We did and got a great example of the classic tourist trap. You buy a ticket and the lady behind the counter gives you automatically a combi ticket also for the neighboring museum. Ok for the extra 4 € we will let it go and visit the museum as well afterwards. It appears that on tuesday this museum is closed ! We were not told at all ! Going back and asking for a refund, the lady still does not speak English, but her colleague explains that the ticket is valid for 3 days. Ok but we came from the other side of the Island. Suddenly they do not understand me any more, nor the Swedish couple who was there for the same reason. A classic example if the customer service level of Greek state employed people ? What they need are motivated people that speak at least one tourist language ! That’s there main income at the island not ? Try to understand… So don’t go there. At least not on tuesdays. The old town is quite nice to see though, but avoid that lady behind the counter or clearly ask for a single ticket only !

Loved visiting this site - fascinating history, lots to see. One of our favourites during the whole trip. Interesting to see the ancient script and Roman influence. Small shop and cafe on site.
