Nelson Mandela was arrested on 5 August 1962 outside of Howick, KZN Natal, South Africa. He spent the next 27 years of his life in prison. He was captured by armed apartheid police who flagged down a car in which he was pretending to be the chauffeur. Having succeeded in evading capture by apartheid operatives for 17 months, Mandela had just paid a clandestine visit to ANC President Chief Albert Luthuli’s Groutville home to report back on his African journey and to request support in calling for an armed struggle. It was in this dramatic way, at this unassuming spot, that Nelson Mandela was finally captured and arrested.
The sculpture acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the capture of Nelson Mandela. It can be seen from the road as a forest of steel poles. To see the sculpture, you walk from the Visitor Centre along a path representing 'the Long Walk to Freedom'. As you walk towards the sculpture, you end up at the viewing point halfway down a cut into the earth, where the steel columns gradually come together and focus at a particular point 30 metres from the sculpture. It is at this point where you see illusion of a flat two dimensional image recreating Madiba's portrait, metaphorically announcing his return to the site of his disappearance from world view.

Moving place, with a museum dedicated to the history of Mandela and Apartheid. The monument created for the 50 years of Mandela’s imprisonment is magnificent. Depending on your appetite for reading in museums, allow 45 minutes to 1:30. Possibility of dining on site.

This place is not being maintained, like the many national historical attractions in SA. This is a loss for the tourism industry and visitors. Sadly it seems to be mismanaged and starting to be decapitated. Hopefully it can be saved. The staff are not really helpful or assist tourists when they visit. There are many missing parts on the walkway to the outdoor sculpture.

Very interesting and meaningful. Well done exhibits, sculpture in the picture shows up most times you are looking for the site and is Mandela's head unique in design and sort of haunting to what he had to endure. It is difficult for the museum to have wifi connection. or internet for staff. We only had credit cards to pay and they could not process the cards. We entered and left without paying and trying now to find a way to make a donation to pay for our tickets One of his quotes after 27 years in prison, "As I walked out the door towards the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison."

Excellent customer service during a recent visit to the Mandela Capture Site. I was the Tour Leader of a large group of tour operators from Nigeria and Ghana.. The team was on the ball and guaranteed business from afar.

Interesting place to visit, clean, well kept grounds and very clever visual sculpture of the great man. Glad I broke my journey from Durban to Dundee here.

This site was part of an organized 2-week trip I did and I was actually not aware of this attraction in South Africa until I visited. The main exhibition hall is modern, with just the right amount of artifacts and information to absorb some of the vital histories of this great, great man named Nelson Mandela.
The art piece that comes into shape as you approach it, is of course, the highlight of the site, but the life events that are marked as you walk to it is what made visiting this site so memorable. It was a 5-10 minute reminder of what Madiba went through from birth to death and how much we have to thank him for.

"Put this on your Must Do List"
I just returned from South Africa. I had the opportunity to finally visit this beautiful exhibit and museum where Nelson Mandela was captured. The site location is in a most beautiful and tranquil area, reminiscent, I'm sure of the real Africa. Please visit the website to learn about the most violent and volatile history of this beautiful country. This is a great place for meditation and reflection.
The museum has wonderful relics, photos, and copies of very important documents related to the struggle of a people fighting to reclaim what was violently stolen. There is also a cute gift shop with books, videos, CDs, T-Shirts, and more.
On my next trip, I plan to spend more time at this site.

FROM Johannesburg how can i get here to the capture site ?
Is there a bus or a train that I can get ?
Please anyone?
Skrevet 20. juli 2017
Sorry - no buss or train. If you have a limited time, or no chance to drive, stay in Johannesburg and go to the Apartheid Museum, the Mandela house in Soweto and Lilieslief Farm in the north of Johannesburg. You should get most of the same info - the capture site is interesting for the sculpture and its symbolism - but not essential
