We visited for a hike and had a great outing. The reception area is friendly and give you a map and advice on the trails you can choose. They were not brilliantly sign posted but we found our way to both sets of waterfalls which were lovely. Also went for a bit of a swim /M- the water is shallow but not freezing cold and fun for a splash around. We didn’t spot much wildlife apart from an abundance of butterflies and a fair few bird species; and some very friendly zebras who came quite close to us. For R35 great value and we enjoyed our time.

Went with friends and thought it could have been better sign posted.
I would suggest driving to certain car parks and then hiking from there. We did the falls and cascades walks and they didn’t take that long. Views are lovely.
Bum slide is small but looked heaps of fun. We only saw zebras on entry to the park .
Lots of birds
Saddles picnic spot is small and not very welcoming so I would try one of the other ones.
Take a packed lunch and drinks
Would visit again

My family and I have often stayed at the Umgeni Valley Chalets when in Howick. It was the most convenient place for us and the facilities were good enough to meet our needs as we really only use it to shower and sleep. Over the years, we have noticed that the chalets are beginning to look a little run down.
This year, however, run down is the ultimate understatement when describing the chalet we stayed in. It was dreadful. So much so that we made the effort to shower in our family's home and simply only slept there and rushed out the first thing in the morning.
When we arrived, we couldn't actually get into our chalet because the shrubbery around it was so overgrown that it blocked the room from view completely and was barely accessible. We had to ask for the shrubbery to be cut back for us. This little prepared us for what we would find inside though.
The entire chalet needs to be renovated. The floors need to be redone as the carpet and tiles were stained and felt greasy and unclean. The walls need to be repainted as they were dirty and stained in every direction. The furniture and decor all need to be improved and replaced. The sheets were stained with what looked like blood droplets or make-up, the chairs were all stained from overuse and the curtains were so worn that they were almost transparent. The curtains themselves were disgustingly dirty and gave off a white powder when they came in contact with clothing and the curtain rod was falling off the wall. The beds themselves are bouncy and my mattress was so overused that it slopped down to the right making for the most uncomfortable four nights of my life.
The plumbing system also needs work. The pipes made bellowing noises and the water pressure was almost nil. The taps and the toilet pipes/fixtures were held up by duck tape and such and the drains gave off a horrible unhygienic vibe. The shower itself was dirty, with so little water pressure that I felt cleaner stepping in than I did when I stepped out, and the floor of the shower was uneven. When the toilet was flushed, it practically woke up the whole town as well. The ceiling in the bathroom needs major attention as it is black with mould/water damage which is absolutely unacceptable as it puts visitors at risk. The blinds in the bathroom were also broken and the floating shelf on the wall was five minutes away from falling off. The towels smelled mouldy and desperately needed replacing and the bathmat was literally in shreds.
In the little kitchenette, the kettle was old and stained. The kitchenware was stained, broken/chipped and mismatched. In the utility closet there was an iron, but no ironing board and a bucket but no mop. The wardrobe doors didn't close very well either and the locks were broken and upon opening them, there were only two hangers.
Within 30 minutes of being in the room and upon the worse shower experience I have ever had, we decided never to come back again unless the chalets are redone and maintained. Nothing in the room was looked after or thoroughly cleaned. We were absolutely disgusted and saddened by the state of our room as we generally enjoy staying at Umgeni Valley.
Several years ago I would have said that it was the perfect place to put up family members, now however my recommendation is - do not touch this place with a 10-foot pole.

Great hike on the Dwarfs Dawdle. Scenic views and able to get really close to herd of Zebras. Also saw Impala and wildebeest. About a 5km Hike fairly easy and lots of bird life.

Attached to the Education Centre are several cottages providing accommodation. From the outside, one doesn't have high expectations of the standard of accommodation, but upon entering, you will be won over; the cottages, ranging from small units through to family cottages, are decorated in what I would term rustic chic. The relatively old accommodation has a nonetheless fresh feel, with comfortable beds and stylish lounge and kitchen facilities.
The plumbing is old and slightly temperamental, but we all managed hot showers, so it's not that bad! The staff are very friendly and helpful, although don't expect immediate action over weekends.
All of this, combined with the magnificent setting of the Umgeni Valley and the nearby Howick Falls, which you can view from a unique perspective on one of the walks, as well as the zebra and other animals that graze around the cottages, makes for an enjoyable stay. Try it!

My son Ross and I visited this spectacular part of the Howick Midlands in March. We were greeted by Zebra as we drove in through the main gate. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were given a diagram of trails and pictures of animals that you might come across on your hike. We were amazed by the spectacular scenery and the abundance of wild flowers that adorned the surrounding hills. We enjoyed our hike but were overcome by the heat . If you decide to hike in Summer rather choose to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon. There is so much to see, don't forget to take something to drink and a small packed lunch. You can buy liquid refreshments at the office. Make a stop , you will not be disappointed.

We did a 24km trail run through this park which was truly unforgettable. It felt like we were taken to another time! The valley is absolutely beautiful with an array of grasslands, bush, forest and some really lovely cliffs. I believe you can camp overnight there as well in the campsite or one of the little lodges. It seemed to be well maintained. Definitely worth a visit if you love the outdoors.

Indulo walk near the cliffs is amazing, incredible scenery and a challenging enough scramble for kids and adults alike. Saw zebra, giraffe and antelope. Great few hours, with picnic spots to braai.

This place is really stunning. It's a nice walk down to the activity area where there kids can collect insects and learn about it. As well as do a obstical course. The walk up was difficult for begginers. Really worth it and the staff are so friendly and cool. Will go back there for sure.
