I loved this museum. Sadly, a number of the houses were being refurbished or were under maintenance when I went, but that cannot be helped, and it's just a reason to go again. What a beautiful museum this is, everything is so well laid out and the staff were so kind and eager to tell me about the buildings.

It was also very clean and it was easy to find toilets and vending machines. I really really liked how so many of the old shops looked as if the shopkeeper had merely popped to the back for a moment and would be back out to serve us at any moment. It was genuinely so lovely and gave a real sense of living history. Do not miss the beautiful old sento with its murals.

We visited this open-air museum on December 10th. The museum exhibits a series of historical buildings from the Tokyo area. The buildings were moved here or reconstructed to preserve a chapter of architectural history that has been almost completely lost to fires, earthquakes, wars and urban renewal. Visiting the interior of these buildings is permitted. For some buildings, they ask you to take off your shoes before entering.

An outdoor museum located in Koganei Park that has been reconstructed by relocating a historic building of high cultural value
I heard that and visited. The admission fee is 400 yen and there is an additional discount if you have a JAF membership card.

The park is the residence of the wealthy class from the landowner farmers of the late Edo period to the middle of Showa period,
There are many stores that are indispensable for the lives of ordinary people.
You can also learn about the lifestyle of the period,
It was a very nostalgic atmosphere, adults and children could enjoy it, and we could see foreigners.

Personally, I liked it.
・Toden
・Bonnet bath
・Landlord farmers like the ones in Musashino in the old days that appear in period novels
・Neighborhood houses like the ones we saw in the early series of the manga Sazae-san
・A square with clay pipes that look like they are coming out of Doraemon
・ Sentos and izakayas rumored to have been the models for Ghibli movies
And so on.

And of all the homes of the wealthy, the Mitsui residence was a sight to behold.

I think you should look at the time for at least half a day because there are so many highlights.

The Architectural Museum is a gem you should explore. Situated in outer Tokyo this area displays an extensive range of real buildings that show the life and times of Tokyo citizens from 18 century till now. Beautiful restored single and double storey buildings in lovely realistic surroundings bring to life the creative Japanese architectural styles. A street representing the shops of 1900’s showing a totally copper clad buildings was a highlight.
About 1.5-2 hour out of Tokyo by train was also interesting but worth the time spent. Surface JL line train to Koganei-shi (on SS line) but you should take a Taxi about 15 mins ride to Architectural Museum- easier than bus about $15Aud. You need 2 hours plus to absorb the building and walk thru all the rooms. You can have traditional Tea service in a historical house as well. A great day outing that has no crowds!

This area a section of a much larger Koganei Park. The open air museum is quite serene with few crowds. I wish we could have seen more, but the heat on that August day was too much.
Inside are many scale buildings and homes that illustrate Japanese prior life such as a store and a bath house. Unlike some places we have visited, this one adds a few more props to the buildings to make them more lifelike. You can enter most of them, but you have to take off your shoes.
Miyazaki the director of studio Ghibli is said to have frequently visited this open air museum for inspiration. He was said to have found it in places like the facade of the bath house and the old time trolley.
There is a souvenir shop and washroom in the entrance building where guests buy admission.
If you intend to come to the area or to the park, the museum is a nice addition

I didn't know there was a place like this in Tokyo! Thank you to Koganei City. Historic buildings throughout Tokyo have been beautifully and carefully relocated, and it is a place where the lives of modern and Showa Tokyo people can be felt through the buildings. Even on weekends, I was able to take a leisurely walk back in time without getting crowded.

You can go up to the residences of wealthy farmers, the residences of the Mitsui family, Takahashi Korekiyo and renowned architects (we basically take off our shoes, so easy-to-take-off shoes are a Recommendation), and there is a good old-fashioned shopping street, and I was particularly nostalgic for the sento of old.

There is also the residence of Mr. Mishima, who invented Calpis, and the ground floor is a stylish cafe where you can have Calpis Shabian (Calpis smoothie), which you can only drink here. Calpis, a swanky residence that makes you think about old people's lives, was particularly delicious.

The second floor of a building in a shopping street is a udon shop where you can enjoy delicious hand-made noodles. It was fun to find a hidden bridge.

We had a great time learning about history.

The Edo Architecture Museum is certainly not on the main route for Tokyo tourists, but it is a wonderful place that offers very special insights. The museum is dedicated to preserving historically significant buildings that have been rebuilt on the site because they were destroyed in their original location or had to be relocated. You can visit a whole range of architectural treasures: wonderful Meiji trading houses, imposing residential buildings, a tiny Koban house, a photography studio or a modern Bauhaus ensemble. Highly recommended - the slightly longer journey is definitely worth it.

This open-air museum is located in Koganei Park, Tokyo, and has relocated and preserved historical buildings from Edo and Tokyo that are disappearing. I had wanted to visit for a long time, and it was a very interesting and enjoyable visit. I particularly liked the Maekawa Kunio House. Maekawa was an architect who contributed greatly to modern Japanese architecture. It was completed during the wartime regime and did not use particularly fine materials, but it is simple and modern, and you can feel the depth of its sense. The pre-war Tokyo buildings were also unique and interesting. I had hayashi rice at Musashino Sabo, a Western-style building renovated by German architect Georg de Lalande and now used as a cafe. Even if you're not a fan of buildings, it's a fun little-known spot close to the city center.

I love the Edo period, so I went there thinking "Tokyo = Edo" and "Edo" in "Edo period" (lol).

It was a shame to go there without any suspicion, but it was good! You can take your time to enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere, reproductions, and architecture. There is a park and the plum grove is now beautiful, so I'm glad I went. I went from 2pm to 4pm. I also went to the cafe, but it was expensive at 780 yen for a cafe au lait. More expensive than the admission fee!

It's a good place for retro lovers!
