I went to Chiltern with my girlfriend and some friend of hers last weekend and we had a lovely time on the walk from Princes Risborough and Wendover. We probably walked just around 12-13 km and we some lovely sights from the various hills. One of the best experiences was witnessing an eagle flying against the wind, which is not something that I can say I've ever seen before. After we had picnic on the top of the first big hill, we went to a pub on the way to Wendover for a refreshing drink. Halfway between Risborough and Wendover, we noticed an aristocratic mansion, which turned out to be Chequers, the country estate of the UK Prime Minister. We bought a few items in the shop and noticed a few photos of former Prime Ministers, including David Cameron and Theresa May. All in all, we had a very good time, though the Chiltern landscape is not very varied and I didn't find it nearly as beautiful as the Lake District or the Cotswolds. Still, Chiltern is very close to London, so if you're looking for an easy hike not too far from capital, it's definitely worth a visit.

As said in my previous review of this area surrounding the uk. It’s good for country walks, free entry weekend activities and family picnics. however, be warned that paths and the area of these places very secluded and remote from any amenities.

The Chilterns are beautiful and although I live here so might be slightly biased, I’d say they can match anywhere in the UK for scenery. Autumn or Spring mornings in the Beech woods take some beating.

A very delayed break in Marlow (interesting and newish Travelodge) permitted late autumn visits to NT houses at Hughenden and Greys Court: terrific discoveries, both very different, and possibly better because of the timing. They weren't overrun. Despite on-off rubbish weather we found both places welcoming, well-run and seasonally decorated: in fact we returned to Hughenden having run out of time on Day 1. The story of WW2 Bomber Command map-making is worth seeing.
I first visited Cookham in the early 1980s and the place is much the same: very good to see the Stanley Spencer Gallery again, and if you don't know it and are interested in 20th century British art you shouldn't pass through without stopping. It's a well-spent hour-plus. Marlow itself is a lovely town, full of character, and the riverside is a visual magnet.

We stayed in the tiny hamlet of Wainhill, think chocolate box thatched garden setting with views of the ridgeway. The green fields, tranquillity, fresh air, kites flying ahead while you sit back and sip your wine watching the horses graze..... Total bliss...... Then along comes the chug of the steam train.... Toot toot. The Chiltern area is magical. Lots to see and do. We visited Henley on Thames, Thame, Princes Risborough, Great Missenden, Roald Dahl museum and the magnificent Cliveden, Waddesdon Manor and Hughenden national trust properties. Countryfile live at Blenheim Palace was amazing for a whole day of celebrity spotting, fun and activities. The Chilternss were one of the nicest areas of England we have been, beautiful villages, lovely thatched properties, good restaurants and of course don't forget a trip to Oxford.... WOW!!!!!

The Chilterns are a great place for walking , running and enjoying the views. The 87mile ridgeway national trail goes along it and and the views are worth stopping for..

You'll hate the peace and quiet and the gently undulating fields and woodland. The views are intensely boring and who wants to visit so called areas of outstanding natural beauty - stay in your town or city and savour the bustling crowds, the excitement of public transport and the beautiful art on outside walls for all to enjoy. Don't go near the winding country lanes or the rural pubs - so bland. Stay away and live on the edge. Please.

Having lived in the Chilterns for many years, I can wholeheartedly recommend the area for anyone keen on walking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, dog-walking, kite-flying, photography, bird spotting (red kites, especially), picnicking... Beautiful countryside, you would never think you're within half an hour's drive from London! Dozens if not hundreds of lovely country pubs, charming villages and market towns, so much to do and see, any time of year. :)

The Chiltern Hills are beautiful. The drive is so scenic and the walks are very romantic, once you find a public footpath!

Would like advice on which particular town in the Chillterns would make a good base for a self catering holiday (with good local shops/pubs ) with a view to some nice walks but also visits to Windsor and other interesting towns

Agreed - but GPS is vital
In Marlow, and patience with traffic essential at all times, esp in summer (rowing).

Is s there any guided walking tour available in Chilters AONB?
Skrevet 22. juni 2016
Hi. I live here so don't use them. I just tend to walk around and see what there is - possibly missing a lot on the way. If you Google "Nature walks in the Chilterns" this lists a number of societies and groups that do organised walks and there are a couple of areas of special interests that have info and occasionally wardens to answer questions. Sorry I can't be of much more help but I hope this little helps.
