A great place to shop AND to learn! I came here to learn botanical dyeing and traditional backstrap weaving and I am SO GLAD that I did. I just walked into the shop and Delphine, the shopkeeper, helped me arrange the classes. I picked the project that I wanted to do (options might include a wall hanging, a table runner, four place mats, a scarf, etc.) and selected the botanical dyes that I wanted to work with. Then, the next day, I went back to the shop and there was an elderly Mayan lady waiting there to take me to her home for the classes. I worked with Nicolessa and her daughter, Ruth, for eight mornings on this project. It was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of my time in Central America trip. I loved spending time with them in their home and they were so patient and kind. I learned the whole process of botanical dyeing and wove four beautiful placemats. I gained such an appreciation for the artistry of these women and it was a great cultural experience. I now understand how much time and effort goes into crafting these beautiful textiles and will think twice before trying to bargain too hard in the markets! If you don’t have time to do both the weaving and the dyeing, you could always choose to do just one or the other and you could also choose a smaller project than the one that I chose to do. Don’t worry if your Spanish skills are limited—it won’t matter! This is hands-on learning at its best and your teachers have experience working with foreigners like me who don’t speak much Spanish. I highly suggest offering a tip or giving some gifts (fresh fruit is always a good choice) to the teachers at the end of the classes. They seemed to really appreciate it when I brought fresh fruit, eggs, pancake mix, canned peaches, cereal bars for the kids, etc. I also gave a cash tip at the end of the week. I would do these classes again in a heartbeat. I hope to come back again next year!

So amazing! We learned so much about how they dye and weave and got the opportunity to talk to a weaver for free! Their products are beautiful.

Walked in for a visit today and was sad to notice that many of the products were mislabeled and being promoted as made in San Juan la Laguna and/or made with natural materials such as natural dyes and handspun ixcaco. These are blatant lies in some cases. Very unfortunate as the group clearly has some excellent products. I presume they are feeling the competitive pressure of the town when it comes to weaving and natural dyes. I noticed many items being sold as “ixcaco” that were not handspun, meaning it cannot be the local heirloom cotton processed in the traditional drop spindle that they advertise.

This amazing place is an absolute DO NOT MISS. We wandered in here just on a day trip and it has become one of the top 3 places I’ve ever visited. We watched a presentation on how these talented women make the most beautiful garments to blankets by hand. These women work tirelessly and with some of the most talented artistry I’ve seen. The goods are sold in the shop, it opened my eyes and my heart to the talent and timelessness of some of the basic things we take fir granted. If you are lucky enough to visit- well, you’re lucky enough.

Many of the villages, indigenous cultures, and Mayan women support themselves around Lake Atitlan via weaving cooperatives like Casa Flor Ixcaco in San Juan La Laguna. I learned about Casa Flor via Trip Advisor and decided to visit.

Depending on if you are spending One Day at Lake Atitlan or longer, you could visit Casa Flor Ixcaco for a weaving demonstration for about an hour or so. If you are staying at Lake Atitlan longer, you may consider a weaving experience like making your own scarf for a three hour or half day workshop for 150Q-300Q (about $20-$40). Make sure you visit their Website, Facebook, and Message WhatsApp to reserve for a workshop. *Prices subject to change.

I did my demo with Ana and she is amazing! She explained and showed me so much in 30 min! I got some souvenirs for friends! I will def be back when I return to GT for a scarf making workshop

You really get to learn how fabrics are made from start to finish. Ask for Delfina! She will treat you well and help you learn and you can ask her so many questions. She is a local and speaks perfect English. There is also an amazing gift shop where clothes and other gifts are tagged with the date made and how long it took to make the very item you are holding. Most we bought took a week or more to make. It really helps you appreciate the craft of hand made weaved products and fabrics. Eye opening experience and an opportunity for a truly authentic experience where you can support local friends entrepreneurs who are practicing an age old craft and who are raised in the traditions. One of the most memorable experiences of visiting Lake Atitlan. When you get off the boat you can walk 10 - 15 minutes up the hill or take a quick and fun tuk tuk ride. Our driver knew the location and Delfina!

Esperamos volver!!

It was so informative to learn about the history and traditions of weaving. I learned about the various natural plants and insects that we can use to make colored dyes and how crafty the work is. Thumbs up to the ethics of this business as well – weavers get paid once they finish the product and each product shows exactly who weaved it, how many days it took/profit made.

Note that we were told the tour was free by someone else (information can become outdated), but upon arrival we discovered that there was a cost of 25QZ, unless we end up purchasing a product. Fair because we received such an informative tour!
