Montserrat Mountains are located in the center of Catalonia close to the Monistrol de Montserrat town. We came here to do a hike from the Monastery to see some chapels like Sant Dimes, Sant Benet, sant Salvador i Santa Anna and return in a circular way. Really the views of surroundings are very beautiful and the views of peaks of Montserrat Mountains like the Elephant, the Pregnant and the Mummy are fantastic. A typical excursion in these mountains. Wonderful.

Montserrat, in the Catalan language, it stands for "serrated mountain", is being considered as the heart of Catalunya for many Catalan. These serrated mountains were formed by a range of sedimentary round-shape rocks and ridges and they look spectacularly stunning all the time and from all angles.
Montserrat is only 1-hour drive/ train from Barcelona (which you can take the train from Espana rail station, for details please see the section below). Montserrat offers one of the best sceneries in Catalunya as it's not just about its Monastery, but it's also about its spectacular mountains. Only when you arrived Montserrat, you would understand why it's called the "jagged mountain" as each mountain rock looks like it was carefully carved by God.
The most popular things to do at Montserrat are i) Sightseeing the Montserrat mountains; ii) Visit the Monastery, to experience its spiritual basilica and to worship the Black Virgin; iii) Take the Funicular Rides to reach other parts of Montserrat mountain (i.e. Sant Jeroni or to Santa Cova); iv) Visit the Montserrat museum (it costs 8 Euro).
Tips:
In my opinion, the most convenient way to visit (for travellers) is to go by yourself so that you don't have the time restriction with the tours or to force yourself to visit the wine-tasting tour (unless if this is what you want, of course). Here are some of the tips (for people who wants to go by themselves) about how to get to Montserrat by trains from Barcelona:
1) You need to take the Line R5 train from Espana rail station. Espania station is a massive station so it might not be easy to find the right platform, therefore, always give yourself plenty of time before the train's departure time. It's easier to find the R5 train inside the underground station rather than trying to look for the right entrance outside the station. To find the right platform, try to look for the direction signs of "R5" or "A to Montserrat". My 2nd tip is, the R5 platform entrance is near the "Fira Montjuic" and "Sortida Exposicio" exits.
2) Trains departed and returned every hour (please check the timetable in advance!). First of all, you would need to decide whether you want to take the Cable Car or the Cremallera Funicular to go up the Montserrat mountain, as they are located at different stops at Monserrat and both tickets are different. Although the tickets have the same name & price, however, you'd have to specify which ride you would want to go with as they are not interchangeable and you cannot use a different route once you've purchased the ticket.
3) You could purchase the tickets via the ticket booths or from the tickets machines. My advice for first-timer is to approach the Tourist Information Help Desk to help you to purchase the right tickets.
4) Prices are varied and they're depending on the packages you choose. The most common tickets are the Day Return (Adults 22 Euro & Children 16.80 Euro). Personally, I would not purchase the Funicular Rides to Sant Jeroni or Santa Cova until I arrived at Montserrat. This is due to the rides to other parts of Montserrat could be temporarily closed, but the official might fail to notify the staff at Espana station in advance. The prices aren't much different anyway. (i.e. on the day I visited, the staffs at Espana station weren't aware that the Santa Cova was closed for visitors)
5) There are Tourist information help booth/centre at both Espana station and outside the monastery at Montserrat.
Montserrat was the main reason why I choose to visit Barcelona in the first place. Fortunately, I had a fantastic time there. Highly recommended if you're in Barcelona and if you're attracted by the pictures of Montserrat.
