Although it is the hot season, I found out that I could enjoy shaved ice (see attached photo) at Matsuya Salon Lounge during my visit (there are seven types on the menu, see attached photo), and ordered Milk Tea (800 yen including tax). After worship, I can relax and enjoy the shaved ice while looking at the worship hall, so from now on I will not have any problems visiting Tokyo Daijingu in the hot season. Also, there was a notice posted in the shrine grounds announcing that a store selling Ise specialties called ISEMISE will open on Daijingu Street in June this year, so I recommend that anyone planning to visit in June stop by.

It seems to be a shrine famous for matchmaking,
and there were many female worshippers.
This is a shrine dedicated to Tokyo's Oise Shrine and Amaterasu Omikami. The Kawazu cherry blossoms were in full bloom.

Quite small shrine but crowded with locals. Main hall is not accessible. It is a shrine for love and relationships mainly so there's a lot of ladies making prayers. Omikuji is at fixed price and in Japanese only, so not much option for foreigners.

We will provide information about Tokyo Daijingu Shrine in Fujimi-cho, Chiyoda-ku. We visited Tokyo Daijingu Shrine on October 26, 2023. To access Tokyo Daijingu Shrine, exit the A5 exit of Iidabashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, Namboku Line, Tozai Line, or Oedo Line, and there will be a traffic light (displayed as "Iidabashi 3-chome"). Go left and cross the crosswalk. Turn right again and cross the crosswalk. Go straight for about 50m and you will see Osaka Osho Iidabashi on your right, so turn right at the corner ahead and go about 100m and you will see stone steps. Go up the stone steps, turn right at the corner ahead, and you will see the stone torii gate of Tokyo Daijingu Shrine on your right.
Tokyo Daijingu Shrine was founded in 1880 on the site of the residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Yurakucho, with the approval of Emperor Meiji, as a "remote worship hall" for Ise Shrine in Tokyo. By the way, a "remote worship hall" refers to a place where you can worship even if you are far away from the shrine. It is said that this will bring the same effect as worshiping at the shrine. Also, in the Edo period, worshiping at "Ise Jingu" was a lifelong wish of people. At first, it was called "Hibiya Daijingu" because it was enshrined in Hibiya, but after it was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake and moved to its current location in 1928, it was called "Iidabashi Daijingu", and in 1946, it was renamed "Tokyo Daijingu". In addition, in 1900, the wedding of the future Emperor Taisho was held in front of the Kashikodokoro altar of the Imperial Palace's three shrines. To commemorate this, "Tokyo Daijingu" established Shinto wedding ceremonies for the general public, and is also known as the first shrine in Japan to hold Shinto wedding ceremonies. Currently, it is counted as one of the "Five Shrines of Tokyo" along with Hie Shrine, Meiji Shrine, Yasukuni Shrine, and Okunitama Shrine.

By the way, it is popularly called "Tokyo's Oise Shrine," because it enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke Okami, and Yamatohime, the deities enshrined at Ise Shrine. In addition, since it enshrines the "Three Gods of Creation," who are in charge of the creation, nurturing, or tying of all things in heaven and earth, it is also known as a shrine that brings good luck in finding a partner, and people from all over the country come to worship in hopes of finding a good match.

Tokyo Daijingu has over 40 types of amulets. The most popular of these is the "Lily of the Valley Amulet," which is based on the motif of lily of the valley flowers. There is also a unique amulet called the "Love Success Musubi Musubi Fuda," which has two wooden talismans on which you write your wish. Whether or not it has any divine favor is unclear, but rumor has it that the "Shinmon" gate has a heart-shaped pattern called "inome" (boar's eye), and if you take a photo of it and keep it safe, you will be blessed with a good match. This is a shrine with many things related to love fulfillment.
My impression after visiting "Tokyo Daijingu" is that, above all, if you slowly look from the bottom of the stone steps toward the torii gate and the worship hall leading to the Shinmon gate, your mind will calm down. After purifying your mind and body at the "chozuya" (purification fountain), you will find the "main shrine" in front of you, and to the left, the "office for offering love charms" and the "Tokyo Daijingu Matsuya Salon" with its banquet hall. Also, at the "Iitomi Inari Shrine" within the shrine grounds, a shrine statue donated by the ninth generation "Ichikawa Danjuro" is enshrined.

Pilgrimage Route

① Torii ⇒ ② Chozuya ⇒ ③ History Board ⇒ ④ Iitomi Inari Shrine ⇒ ⑤ Shinmon ⇒ ⑥ Old Fudasho ⇒ ⑦ Shrine Building ⇒
⑧ Gift Shop

*Additional Information

Go up the stone steps and pass through the Torii, and you will find the Chozuya on your right and the History Board on your left. Go up the stone steps further and you will find Iitomi Inari Shrine, a shrine within the grounds, on your right just before the Shinmon. Go through the Shinmon to enter the grounds. You will find the Old Fudasho on your left and the Shrine Building directly in front. To the left of the Shrine Building is the Gift Shop. The Shrine Building is built in a stately Shinmei-style style. The highlight is the tent with the shrine crest, the "16-petaled chrysanthemum" and the "flower diamond".

① Amaterasu Omikami: Enshrined deity of the Inner Shrine of Ise Grand Shrine. The chief deity of the Japanese people

③ The three gods of creation...Amenominakanushi, Takamimusubi, and Kamimusubi
④ Yamatohime...the assistant of Amaterasu Omikami who served her and conveyed her will to people
⑵ Divine virtue
Tokyo Daijingu, popularly known as "Tokyo's Ise Shrine," enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke-no-Okami, and Yamatohime, the deities of Ise Jingu (Naiku and Geku). In addition, since the "three gods of creation," who are in charge of the creation, growth, and nurturing of all things in heaven and earth, are enshrined here, it is also known as a shrine that brings good luck in matchmaking, and many people visit the shrine hoping for a good relationship, and its divine virtue is truly vast and boundless. These include family safety, business success, protection from misfortune, good luck, good relationships, traffic safety, and academic success.

3. Iitomi Inari Shrine

This is an Inari shrine that has been worshiped as a shrine within the grounds of Hibiya Daijingu Shrine since long ago. It enshrines Inari Okami and Ojichu Okami, and as the name Iitomi suggests, it is widely revered as a god of food, clothing, and shelter, as well as a god of business success and family prosperity. In addition, since the great actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX had a strong faith in the shrine, it is a shrine with deep ties to the performing arts, and people who aspire to be performers can be seen praying for their artistic progress. A shrine form donated by Ichikawa Danjuro IX is enshrined at Iitomi Inari Shrine. When the main shrine was rebuilt in 1959, it was supported by a number of distinguished figures, including kabuki actors, storytellers, and lecturers. In 1987, Iitomi Inari Shrine was moved from the northeast of the main shrine to the front right of the Shinmon Gate so that more people could visit.
