Mac is an amazing character - so knowledgeable on many fronts. His knowledge of life in Japan, its history & culture, I'd say is superlative. At the same time, he's personable, easy to talk to and ask questions, and has a great sense of humour. All these things made our tour fantastic.
We have done 2 tours over few years. As Mac is a sommelier of Sake and Whiskey, we did a Whiskey tour which was exceptional - takes you to places you would never find or experience without his guidance. The 2nd tour was n the backstreets of Tokyo including a sake tasting experience. Fantastic. Both tours were very different but both great. Our whole family loved it. Highly recommend Mac. You will not be disappointed.

We absolutely loved our Japanese whisky tasting experience with Mac! He is incredibly knowledgeable and made learning about the history and evolution of Japanese whisky so fun and engaging. His whisky selection was top-notch. I appreciated that the tour was customizable—Mac was flexible and accommodating, even selecting a bar with fantastic mocktails for our non-drinking group member. Beyond the whisky, we genuinely enjoyed getting to know him. An unforgettable experience—don’t miss it!

I got in touch with Mac as I wanted to organize a Japanese whisky tasting with friends/business colleagues. Some of us were amateurs of japanese whiskies, some knew nothing. Mac has been able to put a fantastic whisky tasting session of 90mins, and we had a very interesting line up culminating with Hibiki 21! Mac is a great storyteller with a nice sense of humour, authentic passion for what he does and we all had a very good experience from start to finish. Highly recommended and I think we will also try the Sake tasting next time. Thanks Mac!

My husband and I just returned from a magical 2-week adventure in Japan. The highlight was our tour with Mac, which we now refer to as "Mac Day!" Mac took the time to consult with us, understand what we like, don't like - and created an itinerary just for us. Mac blew us away with his knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. He'd pop in next to the taxi-driver and start conversing fluently. His memory is savant-like, and he was a Blast to be with! We saw the key sites on our list, and he surprised us with highlights that you can't find in the tour books. Mac knows all the little nuances and hidden gems in the city- its beauty and its delightful quirks. While I've done a lot of traveling, I was frankly, a little intimidated at the thought of traveling to Japan- the language , alphabet, culture, transit system seems so BIG and different. We booked Mac early in our stay and it was perfect. He showed us how to navigate the train and subway system, taught us a few key phrases that delighted the Japanese, and gave us a respect and understanding for the country. He even made recommendations for what to do in other cities that we visited on our own. Thanks in large part to Mac and his enthusiasm and knowledge about Japan, we fell in love with the country. Can't wait to go back!

Our intro to Mac came through a trusted traveling friend, so we expected him to be compelling... and he is. We gave him a few specifics of what we were looking for (local shopping, casual dinner, excellent nightcap) and he was easily able to show us exactly that, all at locations that we never otherwise would have found. Dinner was all locals + us and absolutely delicious.
Mac stands out for being thoughtful, attentive, considerate, a fun conversationalist, and for being deeply knowledgable. We particularly enjoyed just getting to ask him endless questions about Tokyo, Japanese culture, and his experiences over two decades, which gave us greater insight into the country and its traditions. He's far from rote, incorporating new info in his observations of a changing country.
Highly recommend -

There are not enough superlatives to describe our day with Mac. The day was perfect because he is an extraordinary guide. We asked Mac to take us a little off the beaten track in Tokyo, and we loved everywhere he took us. He knows so much about Japan - what to see, its history and culture - and brought his expertise and good humor to everything we did. We did three days of sightseeing in 8 hours with him at the lead. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend any length of time with Mac, take it. It was the highlight of our trip.

My wife and kids (ages 15, 12, and 9) had the most amazing experience touring Japan with Mac and his team at Maction Planet. We spent 12 amazing days in Japan, touring both the Tokyo and Kyoto areas. It was absolutely one of the greatest trips I have taken and I know that everyone felt the same way. As someone with a life-long interest in Japanese culture, food, and traditions, it was a dream come true experience for me and everyone in our family. Mac and his team are kind, thoughtful, funny, fun, and incredibly knowledgeable. They do an amazing job of crafting an individualized tour to you and your interests. I could not possibly recommend them more. My only hesitation is that we want to tour with Mac and his team again and hope we can still secure a spot with all their great success!

This was our second visit to Tokyo and we didn't hesitate to book our second tour with Mac. He did such a great job sharing a mix of culture, natural beauty, food, and fun with us on our day with him! Not only did he cover all of the requests we had for places to see and things to do, he also included a couple of bonus stops with us as we traveled from location to location throughout the day. He shared information, gave us plenty of time to take pictures so we'd have lasting photographic memories from the trip, and also took a lot of pics for us and suggested ones we didn't think of. When we come back for our third trip to Tokyo, it's going to include another day with Mac!

We had the best time on this tour. Our guide provided a ton of interesting context to both the specific places we visited, and the country/culture in general. We asked so many questions and he couldn’t have been more gracious about answering each of them! We definitely saw parts of the city (we toured in Tokyo) that we never would have thought to go to otherwise. Absolutely highlight of the trip; would recommend to anyone & everyone.

This was my second tour with Mac. My friend and I had Mac tour us around Tokyo for 2 days in 2018 and then we took cooking classes through him during the pandemic. While I'm sure we could have toured ourselves around Tokyo by ourselves this time, but it was way more fun with Mac. He knows so much about the city and about Japan, and his planning skills are top notch. We gave him a list of random disjointed things we wanted to do, see, and eat, and he pieced it all together for us. And Mac is just a fun person to hang out with. Just book him, you won't be disappointed!

Given the good reviews we are interested but what are the average costs for a food tour? I cannot find any information on that... thanks!

They will customise things for you so costs vary. Email them to find out more. Trust me, they are by far and away the best tour operator in Tokyo.

I know tipping isn’t standard in Japan, but do you tip for guided tours like Maction Planet?

I did tip him about 15% of the total cost of the trip and he said that they don’t tip there but he graciously accepted it. He’s worth it!!!!
