The Ikhlar Valley is a steep stone canyon that divides the plain into two “banks” like a deep ravine. It is about 14 kilometers long, and in some places it is up to 150 meters deep. The canyon stretches from the village of Ikhlara to the village of Selime. In the middle of the canyon, between these villages, is the village of Belysyrm, and it is located right at the bottom of the canyon. There's a little river called Melendyz.
The Ikhlar valley is a natural wonder, but it is also famous for the fact that 17 centuries ago Byzantine monks settled here. These hardworking monks carved their own houses and churches right into the stone walls of the canyon, just like in Goreham. It is said that in those days the population of the valley reached 60,000!
More than 100 churches are now known and about 20 of them are open to the public. In many of them, wall murals of different styles: Syrian, Coptic, Armenian are perfectly preserved. They are much more interesting than the monotonous frescoes in the churches around Görem, although well-preserved frescoes of different styles can also be found in the Open Air Museum in Görem.
If you decide to visit the valley, be aware that there are entrance fees. This ticket will give you the opportunity to explore the entire valley and all the churches. It operates from April to October from 08:00 to 19:00 and from November to March from 08:00 to 17:00. Tickets stop selling half an hour before closing time, and there's no weekend.
With a backpack you can go, even with large ones that have everything you need for the night. You can't sleep at the turnstile, but you can hide with a tent if you're already inside. In the village of Ikhlara and in Belysyrm there are hotels for a comfortable overnight stay.
You can eat in the village of Belysyrm, where there are restaurants directly above the river. The second section of the valley also has a cafe above the water. If you want to see all the available churches, be prepared to climb the steps a lot – this will increase the travel time.
The best months to visit are September and the second half of May, as summer is very hot. Be sure to stock up on water, because there's nowhere to get it along the way. If you're with the kids, it's better to pass the second section - it's more appropriate. There are dogs from the village in the valley, but they are harmless.
There are four different entrances to the valley. The first is in the village of Ikhlara. It's pretty quiet, and you can even skip through without a ticket, because you don't always see the ticket-holders there.

Green oasis (green tour) in the middle of a brown, almost desert landscape. Walk the bank of Rio, being the place of pause for the restaurant also, typical, as great service and local food (fish).

Ihlara valley is Cappadocia itself. Worth a visit. Don’t say I’ve seen Cappadocia without seeing them. They lived in towering cliffs. We walked from the cave hotel to the underground city right across. These were the first sculptures we saw. We walked around the church right in front. We completed that area in 1-2 hours. We were tired to return because it was steep ramp. Luckily, there was BIM in the souk square and we got drinks.
The next day, we entered the valley through entrance #1 in the town of Ihlara, 12 km away. There are fewer stairs here. There’s a glass terrace on the right when entering town. It can be considered an aperitif to start. Plus, the lemonade is good. And when we followed the TL30 valley entry sign, we also gave municipal officials with a yellow vessel in two plastic chairs on a street between the neighborhood. But there was no parking available. We parked back on the empty sideway.
We showed the museum online carousel at the entrance. Make sure to download and use it to your phone.
Have a backpack before entering the valley. Must be 2 small pet water per man. Bites are also good for energy. Because it can be a stressful walk. With comfortable shoes, a small towel is best for sweating. The hat would be good too. After 6km, you arrive at the café and of course the prices are high. $150–$170 for 1 view. Kola 80 TL. WC $10.At least take off your shoes and rest your feet in the running water. We returned the road instead of continuing to Beliserma, our next departure. Because our car was behind and we didn’t want to take a whore-priced taxi from Beliserma.
We were pretty tired on the way up. The shoes, socks, and footwear were always dusty. We had a lot of grabbing and clean work before entering the car. So keep your luggage with water for washing, splashing, and paper towels.
The last day we left the hotel, our first thing was to stop by the Selime Cathedral, 9 km away. Different rooms at high altitudes are carved for different purposes. If Ihlara valley trip didn’t have this cathedral, it would be missing out. We were amazed by the rooms connected by tunnels, carving, paintings, etc. Keep in mind visiting alone like seven in the evening. Be sure to choose elastic footer shoes while you’re sightseeing. Bring it along with the water. £100 in freshly squeezed orange juice at the entrance cafe, but it was a little like a barrel. Parking was inevitable, too. We parked alongside the road with other vehicles a little further on the public road.
We stopped by Vergyup and Goreme. They’re all rant areas. History brings rights. They’ve flattered and made hotels in almost every fairytale. All the structures we saw were hotels. They've covered the entire tissue of fairy beads with handcrafted stone buildings. They built hotels in unusual places. There are only hotels available right now. Where to see if a tourist stays at the hotel!!?
It even had a fairytale, but it was higher and with three floors of window, and they turned it into a hotel. Toilet 2 Euro, ATV tour time 35 Euro.! We couldn’t take the balloon or the ATV. Everything is focused on foreign tourists. We’re tourists too .!! They get parking money from the seat line on the intercity road. The country comes up with parking money you know. We visited the same places 20 years ago, natural formations you know. Now it’s far away. Parking for every cafe buffet. Fairytales have become city life itself. I loved Ihlara more after seeing these places, too much inside. I hope not. After a sightseeing excursion, I don’t need to go to the Gorge area anymore. I will not go to the Organization again.
I didn't discuss the hotel topic. Because they only sell hotel rooms. As if our only problem was coming from space and staying 2 nights in order not to be on the street..the concept is always the same, they promise you a bed not a vacation. So I will not review hotels.
We stopped by Lake Salt, too. We were actually transiting. We saw the free print and walked into the park. And of course they got money there. Once you're out of the lake, they've put open spaces to wash your feet, water flows from the sink and you're washing your feet $10, and that water is salt! But the lake is great. A few centimeters deep, the water layer is the same as meters deep. Salt is everywhere. Hat and drinking water are required here.
We took 820 km in our trip. Our vehicle consumed 4.2 lt/100km (34 l petrol). The roads are generally flat and the car runs on low-fever. We never turned off the air conditioning, with three adults and 2 bags. On a Sunday evening, the attention to the Shereflikoçhisar-Ankara route is quite crowded.

The valley is nice, it's an easy stroll along the river, with some churches. However, it is really nothing special (the churches here are nothing compared to those in nearby Cappadocia).
Also, it is very expensive (14 euros per person, including children above 8yo).
If any other country in the Alps or the Rockies charged 14 euros per person for an easy stroll of about 1h in a random valley, that country would be extremely rich :-)
Unless you have the Museum Pass that includes Ilhara, you'd better avoid.

Superb hike in the ihlara valley, after the first km people start to thin out and you can take a pleasant walk in contact with nature. But my Recommendation is not to miss the Gozlemes they prepare in the venue before the ticket office. There are two Turkish ladies sitting on the floor who undeterred work the dough to make Gozleme, and they are a divine thing, to try absolutely

It's an ideal spot for entering the valley but the road is too bad, I don't know how to get to the bigger vehicle or bus we've had difficulty driving. However, there are no directions or signs, except for maps at the gateway. We arrived without seeing a church. Directions and distance signage must be added. Nature is so beautiful that Rating is completely valley.

A valley where you can take some walks, nothing compared to our Alpine valleys, very very very touristy, where there are barges / restaurant
All very kind serve lunches not too cheap, as in the rest of the tourist places of Turkey
The madness is that you would pay 15€ x enter, but the Guide has avoided it ...

If you’re on the road to a beautiful place, such as a forest formed in the desert, you’re on the road to a must-do, go from daytime to evening, the visibility rate goes down

It is definitely a place to go on various company green tours, so I did.
We walked along the valley for about an hour and back, and took it easy at restaurants and cafes along the way.
I thought I had seen more wonderful valleys in Morocco, New Zealand, Canada, the Grand Circle, Switzerland, etc., and I didn't think it was unusual because there are so many wonderful valleys in the island nation of Japan such as Sounkyo, Okuirase, and Obokekobuki.
But it was interesting to have lunch at a restaurant on the river and a Turkish coffee in a cafe.

Hi, we will be driving on our own and we are not keen on hiking as we have an elderly with us. 10-20 mins walks should be doable for him. There's also 5 of us, so getting a taxi back to our starting point may be a hassle. Is it possible to stop at any part of Ilhara Valley for us to get beautiful views and see the main highlights?
Skrevet 21. januar 2024
We would love to visit Derinkuyu Underground City and the Ihlara Valley but only have one afternoon to do it in.
Would it be possible to see both in our limited time schedule and if so who could we book a half day tour with?
Thanking you in advance for your advice.

I would say not possible for half day, it’s takes a few hours to get to locations mentioned below and then you need time to explore.
You can do underground city in maybe 30 - 45 minutes and valley in about 1 hour if in a rush, bit then are you really experiencing these wonderful locations if on the run!!
Maybe possible if you had own car and happy to get back to hotel late at night.

Does this trek start and end at different locations? We will have a rental car with us and I'm trying to figure out the logistics if we do the hike. As in would be need to trek back to the starting point??
Skrevet 27. august 2017
If you want, you can return by taxi, there are taxis in the valley.
Skrevet 2. mai 2021
Would children (4-6 yo) be able to do this valley walk? Anything to keep in mind specifically? Thanks.
Skrevet 15. april 2017
if you keep in mind to go slowly ... yes no prams for sure ... keep in mind that at some points it might get a bit too much for kids this age ..but lots of places to take a break in.. proper footwear NO FLATS .. ... Your whole experience will be effected by it ...
