The Kaiping region has clusters of Diaolou structures that were solidly built with masonry and/or reinforced concrete so that they are strong enough to prevent break-ins by local bandits that roamed this area back in the early to mid 1900's. The Kaiping region is very meaningful to me in that this area was where my parents were born and raised, but not in the "luxury" areas. Around about 1930 to 1950 time period, many of the residents of the Kaiping area had "abandoned" the area for a "better life" elsewhere. Many of these Kaiping residents had moved to the USA - including my parents, uncles, aunts and cousins.

The Chinese government (along with UNESCO) had recognized the historical significance of this area and the unique architecture of the Diaolou buildings. UNESCO had designated four (4) different Diaolou clusters in Kaiping as UNESCO recognized historical sites - including the Zili Village which I had visited for this review.

Upon entering the Zili Village area, there is a nice scenic pond with a colorful wooden walkway that needs to be crossed to reach the Diaolou buildings. There are quite a few buildings in this area, some single level while others are multi-level luxury structures. The largest and nicest building in this area is the "Yinonglu Villa" which is a six (6) level structure. The "Yinonglu Villa" is impressive inside and especially the view from the top level - you can see for miles - great view!

The Kaiping Diaolou's and Villages are a very worthwhile areas to visit - especially when you know what happened to the residents of these areas.

This is a very pretty UNESCO World Heritage Site, with an exciting history. I visited the villages of Zilicun and Majianglong. While the former is more touristy, it is also definitely prettier and more representative of the architectural type to be seen here.

Travelled there in late autumn (November) and it was not at all crowded. The houses are well preserved and you can look through some of them. Furniture and implements of the era are also in some of the houses and you can get a sense of how it was to live there. With a lack of law and order, these houses were really someones Castle, and this aspect is well preserved. From some on top you can get great views of the village, other houses and the nearby countryside.

What is really pleasing is that this is still a working rural village with crops in, animals being tended and people going about daily life. Not too many sellers of snacks when we went there too, so our visit was unhurried and really enjoyable.

Another plus was possibly the cleanest and best public toilet I have seen in China. There is even a children's and nursing mothers room.

The place is really nice and a must see when in Guangdong province. It's a place to get mentally relaxed from city noise and be in touch with nature, you just hear the breeze, your footsteps .... it's just so nice

Hi there, you want to visit Kaiping and see the most interesting things here? Hereafter my suggestion (and how I did it):
1. I arrived by train from Guangzhou, at the train station you find taxi drivers who offer their service to drive you to the hotel (for me Ramada for just 30RMB). During the drive I asked him, if he would like to drive us the next day around. He offered his service for 400RMB. (Spoiler: it was worth it, you arrive on time as you like, 60km travel, 8h all together = very good price).
2. Order: we started with Zili Village and got the 2 days ticket for 5 stations (180RMB per person).
Zili was great. Next station was the garden, also great area. Unfortunately the dragon hill is currently closed. Afterwards we went to Majianglong, which is very small but I liked it. Then Jinjiangli, those are actually 3 villages and around is a Bambus forrest, very nice. Last stop was the memorial which tells an interesting story.
3. Honestly, my opinion, if you saw 1 tower from inside, you saw them all. They do not differ that much, but it is still worth it to climb up to enjoy the nice look out from the top floor.

Additional Tipps: do not go to the Chikan area (Movie and European Street thing) what is mentioned on the map. I believe those areas are the same and it is closed because of renovation. We did that today and... bad luck.

So in my opinion the 5 places included in the full package ticket are the best off and you do not need more.

One last thing for the people afraid of WC situations: I always found western toilets and they were surprisingly well cleaned. Absolutely no complain about that. They do a great job at those 5 places!

Enjoy your trip.

I love the area. They still sell a lot of traditional stuff on the street their and my friend bought some dried mandarin peels which are nice. We also enjoyed visiting the movie park there.

A couple friends and I decided to check out Kaiping yesterday and we were very pleasantly surprised by how pretty it was and how easy it was to do, even though we don’t speak much Chinese.

We departed at 07:50 from Guangzhou East Railway Station (¥68). It took a little over 2 hours as we stopped at Tianhe coach terminal too.

On arrival we grabbed some coffees at KFC and then took a didi to Zili village (¥58) which took about 30 minutes.

We paid ¥180 each for an all round day trip ticket (valid for 2 days).

We wandered around Zili village and then took the free shuttle bus to
Li garden and then to
Majianglong village. The free shuttle runs on a schedule (mostly hourly) that is clearly posted and seemed to be very punctual. Each of the destinations we visited were different and beautiful in their own unique way. Would highly recommend going to all three. Very doable in a day.

From majianglong village you can walk or take the shuttle to the main road and wait for the public bus 613 back to YI CI bus station (¥6) which takes about 45 minutes. Wait on the river side of the road.

We departed at 17:10 from YI CI Bus terminal (¥65) back to Guangzhou East Railway Station. It was a long done but definitely worth it.

This area is moderately interesting, and the type of house is unique to this area and reflect a fusion of Chinese and Western features. The houses are small fortifications, and there are a number of them in this area south of Guangzhou.

I came to this area by bus in 2016 and liked it, I thought it would be fun to explore the villages more by hire car. I found a section of old town in Kaiping that I'd entirely missed last time, and the villages in the area are very much the kind of unspoilt/undeveloped places that you expect. On arriving at Chikan town I found that it is closed off and about to be renovated. For the time being it’s only worth going to this area if you want to focus on the outlying villages and probably only if you have a car.
