My father was a civilian and air force pilot and instructor, he got his Pilot License back in 1929 at age 18, even before he got his driver's license. The first plane he flew solo was a De Havilland Moth. I had been looking for years for a flight in the same make / model airplane he first flew... Classic Wings in Duxford (Cambridge) has heritage flights in legendary airplanes... one of them the Tiger Moth... you can also fly a Spitfire !!
I came in early to Duxford as the airfield and hangars are part of the Imperial War Museum, a huge aeronautical museum (covering also some tanks/armour and other pretty nice bonuses)... after visiting in aw all the exhibits, I showed up ahead of time at Classic Wings hut where they were extremely nice. Every prospective passenger is required to carefully watch an information / safety video, and also follow some strict but reasonable procedure.
Ground personnel was ever present, always putting my safety first. Once they accommodated / strapped and intercom connected me in the passenger (front) seat of this marvelous open cockpit biplane, the pilot took over and initiated an engaging conversation, exploring my motivation and expectations of the flight.
We took off from a grass runway, getting off the ground in a gentle yet for me exhilarating fashion. After some minutes of flight and a couple of nice turns the pilot asked me if I wanted to take control of the airplane, I immediately replied: YES !! The pilot spent all necessary time to explain what was required for me to take control in a safe and pleasant way. Then he asked me to take control, and I replied: "I have control", I flew with his guidance, did a couple of really nice turns, and gave him back control of the airplane for our return and landing.
Ground personnel took a picture of me and installed a memory card to record the complete flight, which is the best additional purchase I did.
Flying in an open cockpit biplane is a remarkable feeling.
The flight, photo and video were fairly priced. For me was a priceless experience.

I had wanted to have a flight in a Tiger Moth for ages and the de Havilland double seemed like a great way to do this as you can fly two aircraft for a discount over how much they would cost individually. Biplanes are very sensitive to cross winds and so the weather can easily cause flights to be called off. You should take this into account when you book. Fortunately the day of my flight proved to have a nice enough forecast with only a small amount of wind.
I arrived at 10am for my flight at 10:30 although it was delayed to nearly 11am due to some early morning fog. This isn't a problem as you're at Duxford with hours of things to do. There's also a safety briefing including a video to do before your flight as well as making sure the supplied jacket and flying cap fit. The cap includes the headphones to enable you to hear your pilot.
11am came around very quickly and I was helped into the Tiger Moth which was piloted by Amanda. She's a very experienced Tiger Moth pilot who flew one around the world a few years ago so I was in very experienced hands. We flew west for a few miles with Amanda explaining everything. I then got the chance to take the controls. I had flown before and Amanda realised this "You've done this before" She said. It's clear when your up there why these aircraft are so affected by the weather as even on this relatively calm day, the wind was pushing the aircraft around and it required constant adjustments to keep it straight. It was a lot of fun though and Amanda even waved her hands to prove to the onboard video that was recording that she wasn't flying. I flew part of the way back and then Amanda took over for a very smooth landing. It was then back to the Classic Wings Hut to return the borrowed gear and view the video. The video and photos are a bit pricey but you get the video on a nice USB sd card holder complete with the SD card that recorded the video so it's better than some when you just get the ID card. The video is of excellent quality and you can clearly hear all of the radio communications. It's probably just me but I'd prefer a video with less of me and more of the view or perhaps a second forward facing camera but it's an excellent record of the flight.
There was then a bit of a gap before my second flight of the day in the afternoon. I went off to have lunch and had Duxford's excellent fish and chips. I had a bit of a wander around some of the museum (I've been many times but I never get bored) before returning for the Dragon Rapide.
There was a further safety briefing before we boarded. This flight is with many other Classic Wings customers as it's a small airliner. There's no opportunity to fly as it has a tiny cockpit with one set of controls. It's excellent for sight seeing though and I got some nice shots of Duxford plus the surrounding area.
Overall the day exceeded my expectations and I will be looking to return for another flight with Classic Wings in the future. Possibly the Piper SuperCub as my budget sadly doesn't stretch to their Spitfire!
If you're reading this to decide whether to take a flight with classic wings, I would say go for it. I can't fault it and as someone with a bit of a weak stomach when it comes to things in motion, I had no issues in either aircraft. Classic Wings communications were always excellent and their staff were friendly and welcoming on the day. Take into account that your flight may be delayed due to weather. This is for very good reasons and is entirely for your own safety. But definitely go for it!

I was lucky enough to fly in the Spitfire for my 50th and it was breathtaking! The staff were brilliant with preparing for the flight and my pilot (Jon Cooke) was absolutely fantastic. I'm so grateful for the experience. I wish I had the funds to do it all again (and again)... If you are on the fence on whether to commit, I would highly recommend the experience. Absolutely no regrets. Thank you Classic Wings.

I was bought a 40 min Tiger Moth flight for my birthday and enjoyed every minute of it. A good video briefing before the flight which was easy to understand, then kitted up in flying jacket, goggles, headphones etc. The ground crew chap ( sorry his name escapes me) was very friendly and told me exactly what to do and where to stand before and after the flight. The pilot was excellent describing local landmarks etc. and then let me have the controls for a short while before a perfect landing. Can't recommend this flight experience highly enough. This is my 2nd flight from here, last time was in a Dragon Rapide and this was as equally enjoyable.

Booked to fly a tiger moth. How fantastic! It was worth every single penny. The crew were amazing with clear instructions, answered all my questions and totally put me at ease. The pilot was very thorough and let me take everything at my own speed and made it so simple. 100% would recommend. I even came away with a proper framed photo and a USB stick with a video of my entire flight including audio.

Classic Wings were really good on the day and really helpful in scheduling my experience - particularly as I live so far away from the venue - so that I could visit as part of a longer journey.
Plans to deal with confirmation of the flight (weather is a key thing with older aircraft) were logical and consistent with the professional approach overall.
The pre-flight briefing was easy to follow and struck a balance between addressing the experienced and inexperienced student.
The flight itself was an amazing experience, a chance for some sightseeing but for the keen wannabe pilot a chance to experience how military pilots were learning the basics 80 years ago. My instructor pilot (Amanda) was so friendly and reassuring that helped my confidence return after many years away from the cockpit. The subtly placed camera recorded the whole flight and all of the radio chatter enabling me to relive the experience.
Well done, can’t help but believe I will be back!

Just completed the final part of my 70th birthday present from my family, the"Air Commodore" experience with a fantastic flight in the wonderful Tiger Moth. I did the first part (wing to wing with the Spitfire) in the Dragon Rapide in April but due to strong crosswinds I was unable to do the Tiger Moth flight.
I must say it was well worth the wait it was absolutely brilliant, I was dressed like biggles and took the controls a couple of times!! At the end of the flight I was given a photo and a video recording of the flight. All of the staff at Classic Wings were friendly, informative and helpful and I can highly recommend a flight experience with them, drop a few hints to your family if you have a significant birthday coming up and you might be lucky like me !!!😀

First i was afraid to do the flight with the Dragon Rapid, but everyone from the staff was reassuring and there was no pressure. They gave me a special place so i felt safe enough to do the flight. It was an amazing experience and I would truly recommend it.

I was given a voucher through my work for a long service award and I chose the Classic Wings "Tigers and Tracks" Experience day. I was the first flight of the day in the Tiger Moth and experiencing the plane being started up was something! The flight was exhilarating! The next part was the "Tracks" and this was driving an armoured personel carrier over rough terrain. After lunch there was a sightseeing flight over Cambridge in a 'Dragon Rapide'.
Classic Wings couldn't do enough, they were very professional and nothing was to much trouble. I would thouroughly recommend this experience day.

Safety is always our first priority so naturally weather is a consideration.
If it’s unsuitable on the day of your flight you will be able to book an alternative date.
Of course we will do everything we can to fly you on the day of your original booking.

I have appendix cancer could I still be allowed to fly in the tiger moth I feel ok in myself could get aboard only other thing would I have trouble using the parachute I have fistulas in my abdomen this is a bucket list thing I always wanted to do
