We'd stopped off for a break on a journey up to Scotland - as I'm sure a lot of visitors do. Although we didn't stay as long as we might if we weren't travelling on we did venture quite a way around the gardens and along the river.

It has a variety of garden and park with a special medicinal garden as well as an orchard. On a normal visit we would have spent longer.

Although the property is a beautiful place we had a disappointing visit yesterday.
This was our first visit since lockdown on our way to the Lakes.
The house was barely open with no shop other than the second-hand book shop.
The cafe had only one member of staff who was attempting to serve, take money, prepare sandwiches and clear tables.
After waiting 20 minutes for my sandwich to arrive I gave it up and got a refund!
Obviously more staff needed!
If all you require is a drink and a cake you will be fine though.

The house looked really interesting. From the outside you could see the various extensions from, I guess, the 16th up to the 18th century. Lovely orchard, garden and walks. The working water mill was fascinating to visit and we were lucky that the volunteer millers were there to tell us all about it. Spent a very pleasant afternoon there, despite the rather grey weather, ending with some tea and cake in the little (temporary) outdoor cafe.

This ought to be a lovely place but the garden is clearly short of volunteers and past its best in mid August. What is most bizarre is that they boast of their medical garden but provide no information whatsoever about the supposed therapeutic benefit of each plant. There are also no guides to the garden.

If you’re on a bike, do not visit here. They refused to let us in today, as they have nowhere for us to put our bikes? Funny how 2 weeks ago we didn’t have any problem getting in and had no problem with the bikes. Obviously they don’t need our business on a quiet Tuesday morning?? And it shows that the National Trust is not supporting greener ways of travelling?

Other NT places offer a free cup of tea if you arrive by bike.

Hi Rosemary, we’re sorry to hear you were disappointed when you visited us on Tuesday. As you know, we’re a small property with a small team and have limited seating in the courtyard for the pop-up café. Unfortunately as you were a group of thirty cyclists visiting during the school holidays without prior notice, we weren’t able to accommodate you on this occasion. We would be happy to welcome you back if you’d let us know in advance so we can organise a safe place to store your bikes and so our café can put on extra coffee and cakes. Thank you.

We visited Acorn Bank whilst staying on the edge of the Lake District - is a lovely NT property with nice grounds to walk around (even a mill that sells flour made at the mill). There is also a wonderful circular walk out to a little village called Temple Sowerby (about 3.5 miles). Well worth a visit and if you have time the circular walk too!

We had a lovely few hours walking around here today. The volunteers are doing a Sterling job keeping the gardens in good order. Good value for money and free of a member of the National Trust.
Unfortunately the cafe was closed due to COVID but there was a ‘pop up’ and we had fantastic coffee and cakes from here. The sandwiches looked lovely too.
A few plants for sale at a very reasonable price.
Second hand book store here too.

We spent a very pleasant couple of hours in this delightful garden. Garden full of lovely plants, newts in the pond, great orchard, woodland walk, and water mill (working only at weekends). We watched a female Black Red Start feed her chicks in a next box in the courtyard....a bird on the RSPB amber list. The Head Gardener, gardening staff and volunteers were all friendly and chatty.
However, the National Trust tearoom was unfortunately closed, being replaced by a pop up private venture. The food was very disappointing. The scones were dry, sandwich was tasteless and all overpriced. No prices displayed....I wonder why? If the lady serving had been polite and cheerful perhaps we wouldn't have minded so much?!
We have given this garden 5 star rating on the basis of the National Trust offering disregarding the catering.

Stayed here in the accommodation and there is something quite magical about having the place to yourself after hours. The building and grounds are delightful and during staffed hours the staff are great.
The accommodation is all really tasteful and keeping in period with the place though with all mod cons. Enjoyed so much rebooked for the new year.
