Excellent small museum in a beautiful village setting
nov. 2021 • Venner
Visited Port Sunlight with friends as part of a short stay in Liverpool. It is easily reached by train in about 20 minutes from central Liverpool. The village overall is beautiful, with around 900 arts and crafts style houses dating from 1888-1914 laid out in spacious landscaped streets, along with a village school, pub, community hall, etc. The small museum has an informative film about the building of the village, along with models, artefacts and souvenirs for sale. There is a restored worker’s cottage, and a separate exhibit on the history of soap making, included in the admission price. Staff in all areas of the museum were very friendly and helpful.

Museum visit
aug. 2021
We visited with friends and went around the museum after we had done the walking tour. In hindsight it might have been better to see the museum first!

Small but perfectly formed.

Pocket sized museum almost opposite the Lady Lever art gallery. The staff were friendly, the film show very interesting. Lots of Beatles history, and other Mersey beat ‘heroes’. Wander round and enjoy, it won’t take long.

After visiting the Village, the Museum gives you extra explanation and background: a lovely way to complete your visit.

Fascinating industrial workers village
aug. 2021 • Par
Fascinating experience of one mans approach to industry and his workers. Started off with the Museum which was full of info re Lever and the history of the works and village. Realised the economic benefits of investing in the workers. Could have done with more on the actual soap making processes and development. Didn’t do the Soapworks as read it was really for under 10s so may have been some in the there. Took the walking tour with the guide around the wonderful range of turn of century houses for the workers. She was good fun and admitted she was a bit rusty after no tours during lockdown etc. Really knowledgeable on the village and interesting when a current resident chatted to the group as to living here now. Garden fees £1 per year but very restrictive on what you can do with the house but for good reason. Went for a quick wander in the Art museum which has loads of exhibits. Pop up food festival on the green rounded off the day with an ice cream. Really worthwhile visit.

Interesting museum and village

The museum was very informative and interesting, Lady Lever art gallery was truly unbelievable, so.much to see it was hard to take it all in, period furniture, art statues etc.
The workers cottage was an eye opener so much space and hot and cold running water well preserved too. Only disappointment was the soap experience, which was the one thing I wanted to see, the displays were all geared to children up to aged 10 yrs or so. I had hoped for more history of the factory, how soap was made etc but aimed at adults, pity they couldn't do the two.

We will come back for the full visit.

We wanted to visit the Museum Shop to collect the walking tour map but ended up buying several items from the shop itself.
We had a wander around the village looking at the architectural features of the houses and how lovely the place is.
We've decided we will wait out the disappearance of Covid and will take a repeat trip at some point in the future so we can spend the day at our leisure to visit the whole of the village.

We went on the walking tour not the museum itself but it was very good. Dave the guide was very knowledgeable having grown up in the village.
