This is an amazing natural place in Iowa with trails, trees, mountains and an observation tower. OK, the elevation at 200 vertical feet is more like hills than mountains. Still once you have been on the plains, these seem like mountains and the other welcomed anomaly is trees. While in Iowa, the center and its trails are just outside of Omaha, Nebraska. In fact, you get great views of the Omaha skyline from the observation tower.
Anyways this is an education center that looks to educate both adults and children as well as conserve this unique landscape. In fact, these hills are a unique geological formation looking over the flat and fertile Missouri floodplain. If you drive from Council Bluffs to Sioux City, you will see these wooded hills for miles that are home to diverse flora and fauna not found in other parts of the plains.
As for the actual property, I hiked from the Nature Center down the Chute to the Heritage Trail before circling back up to the ridge with the Dozer Cut. I will say hiking the ridge to the end of the property going west is a beautiful hike, see the pictures. On my return, I climbed the observation tower which gives great views of the entire conservation property all the way to Omaha miles away. Finally, it is a very inclusive hiking area with a boardwalk that goes for 1/2 mile to allow everyone to see these hills. This is a great hiking place for Iowa and Nebraska and I highly recommend a visit.

We spent most of a day here - hiking, picnicking and visiting the Lodge. What a nice place! The trails are well marked and well kept. There is an amazing variety of ecology here - both forest and desert plants. Trails range from "easy" to "challenging" and seemed to be labelled appropriately on the maps. The exhibits in the Lodge were informative and the volunteer there was very helpful and could answer all of our questions - he helped us plot a route in the afternoon that could accommodate my bad knee that I stressed on a "challenging" morning hike. There is a nice boardwalk section that is usable by wheelchairs, walkers, etc. There is an admission fee ($5 per car I think) but it was very reasonable for the facilities. Even when the Lodge isn't open, the section where the restrooms (and water) are is accessible from very early to very late!

Three day 2 night girls (sisters) camping trip. Stayed in Burr Oak cabin. Was beautiful and rustic and surprisingly quiet and private from the other two cabins. Could not believe how great the mattress was - slept like a baby! Great trails and unbelievable views! So close to Omaha. Stopped at Stanley's Snack Shack on the way there and had a really great lunch. I guess the only downer was on Monday they were weed wacking about 100 yards from our cabin and this went on all morning, but I guess it has to be done at some point, but it did ruin our quiet morning. Rest room was clean and within easy walking distance to cabin. Did not use showers since we were only there for a couple days. The lodge was nice and we got a sticker for the car and a t-shirt. View from the lodge was amazing and so was the observation tower. Overall, highly recommend!!

We visited in late October 2020 as fall colors were a bit beyond peak but were SO impressed with this beautiful park and its trails! We spent 2-3 hours here hiking the Badger Ridge trail (the best of all) and several others. All the trails intersect and loop so you can create your own path. Very few other hikers on a Friday afternoon.
We visited Waubonsie State Park the next day and did a hike of similar length along a ridge, but honestly felt like the Hitchcock trail views were better, and also there were way fewer people at Hitchcock,
The nature center was closed due to COVID, but restrooms were open, and we were also able to access a tower with views. But come for the Loess Hills hiking, not the indoor experiences! Easily accessible from the interstate, too.

Absolutely fabulous experience...very well kept and tidy nature preserve. Super amount of walking/hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous. Beautiful views of the Loess Hills. Very nice designated area for RV and tent camping, plus rental cabins.
Education center with observation tower...really nice !!!
I was quite impressed at how the park was maintained...really a swell time. I will definitely go back again...highly recommend !!!

Nice drive along the scenic Lincoln highway to the Hitchcock Nature Center. Beautiful setting in the Loess Hills with camping, hiking, and an archery range.

Just a short scenic drive northeast of Omaha tucked into the Loess Hills. The trails are beautiful with great views. The Visitor Center is a great place to stop and checkout the displays and climb the tower to get amazing views.

Stayed overnight. It would be funny if i gave low star rating because it rained and was cold, LOL. The trails were awesome. The backpacking spots were great. They have few spots that you can reserve which is nice and they are not close to others at all.

We took an afternoon drive to Hitchcock Nature center wow! Where have we been?
Beautiful view of the rolling Loess hills. A few picnic shelters, a nature center with a tower to take in the beauty. Several trails for hiking. Also, a camping area, RVs, tents & cabins! Our 1st visit, but we will return. It is an easy drive from Omaha. Definitely
a treat for the soul.

It was our first time visiting and we will definitely be back! It’s a quick 20-30 min drive north of Omaha, and well worth the drive! Our kids had a lot of fun in the nature center learning about all the birds and enjoyed the views from the tower. We hiked down one of the trails for about an hour or so before we had to head back. Can’t wait to go back and explore some different trails!
