Parco Archeologico is an archeological area located on land, in the surroundings of Calatafimi-Segesta town, in the North-Western of Sicily Island. It is a wonderful place, where you can see the remains of some classical Greek structures, especially a temple and an amphitheater, but also other remains of the Middle-Ages era.
When you enter, firstly, you will see an awesome temple, which is very well preserved (except the roof), but you can see the silhouette and almost all columns: great! Then, if you walk on land following the pathwalk, you will see some remains of a town of Middle-Ages, but they are not well preserved. At the end, you will arrive at the amphitheater, located in a high point, from where you can see wonderful views of the surroundings and enjoy the theater, which is almost all preserved and nowadays, concerts and theater are performed in the place: also a great place! For adults and children!

According to myth, the ancient Segesta was founded by a group of fugitives (the Elimi) who escaped the destruction of the city of Troy. Historians have no evidence to confirm this hypothesis, but it is known with certainty that Segesta was for several centuries one of the most prosperous and populous cities in Sicily and remained so after the conquest of Rome. At the fall of the empire Segesta fell into progressive decay, was depopulated completely and the memory of it was lost.
In the last century, excavations, which continue to this day, brought to light the remains of imposing buildings dating back to the fifth to third centuries BC, which demonstrate the wealth of the ancient city. First, a magnificent Greek temple in Doric style in excellent condition, with six columns on the short sides and fourteen on the long side, all about 10 meters high. The lack of traces of the roof and other particular details, suggest that the monument was never completed by the builders (perhaps due to some war, or due to economic unavailability).
At a distance of about 1 km from the temple, in the eastern part of the site, stands a beautiful Greek theater oriented towards the sea. The lower part of the monument is also well preserved with its wide and regular bleachers, while only a few traces of the upper part remain. Near the theater, the remains of an agora (the main square of Greek cities, where people met to chat and discuss business) and traces of a small settlement of less ancient times, probably early medieval, emerged.
If you decide to visit the ruins of ancient Segesta I invite you to bear with patience the difficulties connected with this experience: first of all the poor maintenance of the site, then the lack of sufficient indications and warnings, the indolence of some keepers, the relatively large distances between one monument and another... If you go there in summer and can not stand the heat, try to access the site early in the morning, or a few hours before sunset: the temperature in the hottest hours can easily reach 40 ° C.
I hope that the historical importance of the site and the majesty of the ruins can repay you from any logistical inconvenience.

Absolutely worth seeing for its good maintenance in our days. I highly recommend doing this with a guided tour to better understand many things beyond those that the eye can grasp. Our guide Barbara very prepared and nice.

Interesting archaeological site. To be enhanced and cleaned up.
Very prepared guide who showed us the history and the temple.
It would be useful if the explanation did not stop at simple hints about the archaeological excavations placed at the top of the hill, but that, with due integration, the guide continue his explanations in the site.

Being in history is a magical feeling.
I found it strange to see the temple contaminated with modern art, in my opinion they are two incompatible things but, I repeat, it is my personal thought.
The temple is imposing and the whole area very suggestive.
Indispensable shuttle service and very kind driver who, already left, then stopped to wait for us ..
It wasn't nice to see the staff up next to the theater sitting with their legs on chairs in front of them with cellphones and headphones in their ears...

I cannot stand tour groups and by 10:30 it was packed with buses and people. I took the shuttle bus (every 30mins) ascended the hill to the site. It was very impressive. For me, it was a great detour to be able to have seen Segesta

A desire for years that I cultivated... to see the archaeological park and especially the temple of Segesta
Very well preserved, usable and with an additional artistic feature.: the columns on a long side, bandaged by a strip of fabrics, combined by dowels of various colors, as a link of time, a continuous path that combines historical and contemporary artistic reality.
The experience of seeing him confirmed my expectation☺️

Wake up early to be at 9 in front of the ticket office given the scorching temperatures, alas the opening took place late. Bought package with audio guides because the first accompanied visit was at 10.45 we walk through a poorly maintained path to the Doric Temple. With great understanding we find ourselves inside a film crew, in short the clash between a group of tourists who wanted to enjoy the cultural heritage for which they had paid the ticket and the director who raising his voice and with an unhelpful language rebuked them. The nature park of the site deserves a lot alas it is completely left to fend for itself... see show place chairs stacked inside the Temple.

You can breathe the history of over two thousand years ago, it's a shame that when walking among the monuments and ruins what you notice is the abandonment, the lack of care.

Another fine stop on your tour of Greek antiquities around Sicily. This park is small and manageable but still worth taking the shuttle bus between the temple and the theatre. Gorgeous views from the theatre out to Castellamare del Golfo and down to the temple.

Hello,
Can you see the temple at Segesta from the road or an overlook? We feel pressed for time.
We are trying to go from a morning excursion in Egadi Islands leaving from Trapani at 13:00 , driving onto Selinunte before it closes at 6 PM (ideally be there by 4:00) and then spending the night in Agrigento. Segesta is on the way between Trapani and Selinunte, so we would like to see it but with the parking, shuttle bus and then walking, I worry we won't have time for that. Recommendations?

Saluti. L.

How long should we allow to see the Archeologic Park at Segesta? We will be short on time. We are driving from Palermo to Menfi and would like to stop at Monreale, Erice, and Segesta. Does anybody have a sense of whether or not it is realistic to make all of those stops in one day?
Skrevet 25. mai 2017
We did Erice and Segesta in the same day, and definitely could've done Monreale as well. Monreale is gorgeous, but as long as you see the cathedral and cloisters, which could take about an hour, you would've seen the important sights.
Erice would definitely take longer, but with the most amount of churches in such a small town, you should choose before hand which ones you want to see, and get to those. Don't get the all-day entry pass, since they all close at different times (for siesta too) and some of them were closed completely for renovations. They don't tell you that when you purchase the ticket. You can pay entry at each church, and the prices range from €2-€10. You really just want to see Il Duomo and then walk around the town to the Giardini del Balio and castle for the views. (I reviewed both).
Segesta is an easy stop, and definitely worth it. The temple is in beautiful condition and so is the theatre at the top of the hill. For €6, take the shuttle up there for quickness. I believe it runs every 30mins.
Have a great time! Wish I was still there!
