The Essex Wildlife Trust have a visitor centre that they have abandoned and remains closed.
Access is a little confusing. Take the path to the right of the centre and you soon reach the entrance that descends into the former chalk quarry.
Initial good impressions are marred by lack of attention to the reserve. You get the feeling that once you have done one bit, you have done it all.
There is a drought and I'm sure the place looks a lot more welcoming when green.
Saw the odd other butterfly. Plenty of whites as usual.
No amenities.
Good parking outside the visitor centre.

On a sunny March day, I alighted from the X80 at Chafford Hundred Railway Station. Walked to Warren Gorge - no signage from the station, but found entrance on Pilgrims Lane. Took photographs of birds, sat for a while, then ascended the zig zag path up to the Visitor Centre as I was gasping for a cup of tea and toilet stop. The map on the website was not very large and of mediocre quality so was hoping to buy a more detailed map in the centre. Gobsmacked to see the centre was closed - not just for winter, but permanently! I made my way back via Wouldham Cliffs, Warren Lane and Mill Wood. I then twigged that there was a passage under the railway straight into Lakeside Shopping Centre, avoiding the roller coaster bus ride that took forever to go such a short distance!

We went to Lakeside for a weekend away and saw this place come up close by. So glad we visited. The visitor centre is closed so now toilets accessible. It was beautiful views from the top of the slope and saw lots of ducks, a great place for children.

Wednesday 27th January 2021 Chafford Gorges Nature Park, Grays. Made up of 3 gorges or put another way 3 chalk pits with the estate built around them. It doesn't appear to have access the gorges as one as roads divide them. Our visit was to what appears to be the largest of the 3 in Warren Gorge. The free car park is locked at listed times so make sure your out by then. The route in is via a steep path. There is a visitor centre that was closed during the lockdown. Once at the base, there was a large pond that had a well-stocked range of wild birds which were regularly fed by the frequent visitors. Mostly dog walkers but seating available too. Not somewhere you would go out of your way to visit unless you lived in the area.

Had a walk around this perfect place this afternoon.... very pretty and very well maintained. I live a mile away and didn’t realise the history of the area ... you can walk for miles and see so much ... nature truly is out there.
Great place for walking a dog ( I don’t have one). But could be persuaded to buy one now ..’!!! Will definitely be going back again for some fresh air and excersise

I live near here and feel truly lucky to have three lovely Wildlife gorges all within walking distance. I do have a dog and he loves walking in these areas. Wish people would respect the place and not leave litter and dog waste.
We walk everyday in all weathers and with the seasons changing they are lovely and so interesting to walk through. It’s easy to stroll around them and just enjoy the scenery and quite honestly the peace and quiet.

This is great for fishing with a licence and club membership! The Birds are plentiful and if very quiet other critters can be observed! Wind in the Willows relived!

How to get there please. I heard you can walk over the bridge from Lakeside shopping centre. Is that right?
Skrevet 10. februar 2018
indeed you can but it's a trek once you've crossed the bridge, written directions wouldn't work so well. I suggest a taxi to the visitor centre.
