After arriving to visit my friends in New Milton it was suggested we go to visit Hurst Castle . After a short boat ride we arrived at the castle , sadly parts were closed for work , but what was open was still amazing . On the return trip we had a seal sunning himself on a nearby beach and the boatman took us closer for a better view . A lovely day if you are interested i history and will hopefully go again when more is opened

Nice long walk ending at the Castke.
Unfortunately after entering the Castke quite a few ares were closed off. We felt we could have been told at time of paying.
Interesting place with lots of history. A few talking guides or leaflets would make the difference.
Great views of Isle of Whight.
Cafe closed which was a shame.
Still had a good day out.

Thanks for visiting and leaving a review. We do state on the website (both hurstcastle.co.uk and English Heritage) that both wings of the castle are currently closed, and there is signage at the start of Hurst spit and at the quay where you catch the ferry. We do also have a large sign on the side of the ticket office. The English Heritage guide of Hurst Castle is available to purchase at the time of purchasing tickets. It's a shame you missed the cafe - it's open 7 days a week and open when the castle is open. Glad to hear you enjoyed your day out and the views over The Solent to the Isle of Wight.

A lovely day out. Got the ferry to the castle and then went around exploring all the nooks and crannies, went up and down every staircase just like a child. Great views of the Needles, could have spent hours just watching the boats and yachts going against the tide. Finished off with a walk back to the car park. Definitely on my “To Do Again“ list.

A fabulous little castle, we took the ferry over and we’re greeted by the castle dogs on landing, a lovely little cafe with fantastic cakes! The castle is really atmospheric, lots of spiral stairs for the kids to explore, and at the time we visited they had a trail for children which was really engaging and well thought out, with a very posh certificate at the end! Lots of activities and crafts available too. Staff were so friendly and welcoming, highly recommend!

Thank you so much for leaving such a lovely review! We are really glad to hear you enjoyed all the activities we had on for children over the May half term to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

It is such a shame we can't welcome you to all of Hurst Castle at this time. In February 2021 a section of wall on the 19th-century east wing of the castle collapsed, after the sea exposed and undercut its foundations. English Heritage has now completed the stabilisation of this damaged section and has commissioned a feasibility study of extensive geotechnical investigations around the castle and on the spit itself. This will look into understanding the forces at work on this exposed shingle causeway; and the geology under the castle and is essential in informing the best course of action with regards to the future repair of the breach. The study will take at least 6 months to complete. During this time, the east and west wings as well as the beach will remain closed for the public’s safety. It is lovely to hear though that you enjoyed the ferry ride. Thanks for visiting Hurst Castle.

We visited Hurst Castle with our four children - Good car parking facilities just behind the yacht club (pay machine didn’t take contactless payment but you can pay via the RingGo app) Situated beautifully on Keyhaven Lake - from here you can choose to walk over to the castle (approximately 2 miles) or there is a boat service which takes no more than five minutes to get over. We opted for the boat..which did take contactless payments. It was a lovely little trip with wonderful scenery - However, this is the only reason for my 4/5 stars..as a family of six that cost us £30 return, which is very dear given that it is just a matter of minutes across. Hurst Castle is a fort rather than a typical castle but it’s brilliant for exploring none the less. The other side of the castle is currently closed for repairs but even with the closure it took us around 2.5 hours to get around. Lots of nooks and crannies to get into and stairs to climb which is great fun - with incredible views from the top of the fort (IOW & The needles are very clear!) Lots of information about the history of the castle available in all the different areas. We give the children a challenge of learning three historical facts for a treat at the end of the day - There is a small cafe outside but again, prices are high. Alternatively bring a picnic and there’s plenty of space to set up for something to eat. Over all a brilliant day out and very much looking forward to visiting again when the other half of the castle is open again!

Thanks so much for your visit and bringing your 4 children, I'm glad they completed their challenge and learnt some facts about Hurst Castle and it's long military history. Hope to welcome you and your family again.

Our first visit here as new English Heritage members, the village of Milford is a lovely little treasure to have discovered but the walk to the castle, accurately described on the EH website seemed a hard slog for little reward. The castle has areas cordoned off for safety reasons but the parts you can access were interesting with good views across to the Isle of Wight. The toilets were not great and need some attention. There is a mobile cafe parked outside the entrance. We walked both ways along the spit as there were queues for the ferry. Would advise getting ferry at least one way as the shingle can be a bit tiring.

Thanks for visiting Hurst Castle and your review. The walk on the shingle spit can be hard work but the views along the way are stunning. It does work well for visitors to walk one way and take the ferry one way. The ferries run daily from 10am approximately every 20-30 minutes. The toilets at the castle are fully functioning and cleaned daily. They run on a specialized salt-water sewage system as we are not connected to any mains due to the remote location of the castle. Thanks for you review.

I know part of the castle is out of bounds due to structural problems but why haven't English Heritage moved some of the information boards nearer to the public access areas. For example in order to read the information re the Bopher guns you need binoculars. It wouldn't be too hard to move them. Also a room was closed off which seemed to have a lot of information boards, why not move them to the outside ( although not sure why that room was closed off). I do think the closed off sections were a little excessive as the landside area was closed off, it was the seaward side that collapsed.

Thank you for your review, you are right that Hurst Castle has sustained structural problems. Unfortunately, as you mention, even though some of the rooms are quite a distance from where the collapse occurred, to ensure visitor safety it does mean they are closed to the public, the admission price however, has been reduced to reflect this. The heart of Hurst Castle, the Tudor keep - the most historic part of Hurst Castle built by Henry VIII in 1544, is fully open to the public and for the rest of the Easter school holidays (24th April) we are offering children's activities as part of the admission price. We will of course take on board your comments regarding the information boards and look to relocate them closer to areas you are able to visit. Thank you for visiting Hurst Castle.

Not a great experience. Good display boards but very limited seating. The refreshments - outside the castle were just a portacabin. Hard walk back along the shingle into the wind.
Take the ferry both ways.

We are sorry to hear your visit was disappointing, the ferry to Hurst Castle operates daily from 10am -5.30pm approximately every 20-30 minutes. The walk to the castle is 2-miles along the shingle spit. Due to the damage the castle sustained in 2021 our cafe is now located outside of the castle. There is a small seating area inside the cafe but mainly seating is outside on picnic benches.
