I visited the place today. The last few kms of the road leading to the fort on the hill is DEADLY. There is no proper road. It's full of loose stones. It very risky to drive in a small car. The fort is spread over a vast area. It is advisable to Please take sufficient time and don't be in hurry and do the trip safely. If travelling by a small car it better to stop at the spot where the metal road ends and trek the last few kms by foot.

The fort is around 4.5 km from the Khargone-Burhanpur highway and 20 Km from Burhanpur city. From the highway, view of entire fort is marvelous. It requires about 2-3 hours to explore the entire fort excluding the journey from Burhanpur. Jama Masjid, Mama Bhanja Talao and Mahadeo temple are some of the places worth to visit inside the fort. Visiting Asirgarh fort on the monsoon day was really thrilling. The surrounding view from the fort top was truly enchanting. Unfortunately, the fort is not well maintained like other forts of India under ASI. Some more care could have made this fort a remarkable tourist spot. A trip to Asirgarh fort along with local sightseeing of Burhanpur by auto rickshaw would cost around 1200 rupees. Contact Akhtar Ali (Auto no. MP 68 R 0148) at Burhanpur station for a trip to Asirgarh fort. He is a very nice and friendly chap. Don't forget to visit the Moti Mahal along with the fort which is located around 3.5 Km away from the highway on the other side of the Asirgarh fort.

I have visited over 60+ forts so far and this one is still one of the finest at the same time creepiest forts for me..here are some of the pointers..

1. If you are in or around Burhanpur then do visit this fort.
2. There is a narrow road that leads us directly to the main entrance of the fort, no trek is required as such, so people of all age can visit this place.
3. The road uphill is very narrow and 90% road allows only single car to travel on it.
4. Road is okay, but instead of tarmac it has unsettled stones and dirt, keep honking on turns, bikers do come at a reasonable speed.
5. The main entrance is very huge, information boards are placed, do read before proceeding further.
6. The fort is vast but hardly anything left to be seen.
7. You can see the fort map in the middle and then from that point right goes to shiv temple and left goes to jama masjid.
8. Shiv temple is awesome, they say Ashwatthama still comes and worships the lord shiva, hence there are always flowers around the shivaling. But we did not notice anything like that.
9. On the way to temple, you can see British era's small cottages built for british soldiers, their construction is in ruined state but the masjid and temple are still in good shape.
10. Also on the way, there are huge lakes, probable one or two.
11. Beside the temple there is a "faansi" point where people used to get the death penalty.
12. Jama masjid is huge and amazing, earlier people were allowed to climb the masjid minar but as we were told, a few teenagers died from there hence it is closed for all of the people.
14. Returning path is simple, but on the way you can see British times auditorium.
15. You can still roam the entire fort but then if you are scared of anything then do not roam alone. It's that silent and that creepy.

It is 20 kms away from Burhanpur City. Hire a autorickshaw to reach. They typically charge Rs. 500 to and fro. If you club it with other tourist places then deal could be around Rs. 1000. Do not forget to visit Jama Masjid, Phansi Ghar, Mahadeo Temple, Mama-Bhanja lake on fort.

Visited Asir Garh in the monsoons and the entire forst premises was covered with tall grasses which the villagers were harvesting and carrying bundles of them as fodder for their cattle. To appreciate its architecture its best to take the pay the guard a fee and he will be happy to assist. The vast expanse of the fort has underground rooms with oxygen vents. If unguided it is very easy to just step into one of these open vents and meet an uncertain death. The guide took us to some underground room which was teeming with bats and possibly large reptiles. Just the smell of Bat dropping is enough to repel anyone from entering these underground structures. What is above the ground is the mosque and temple and ponds. The mosque is a masterpiece of Persian architecture. The water management system of the entire fort with aqueducts, tanks and cisterns ensures that at the peak of monsoons also , you will see no waterfalls emanating from the mountain top. All of the water is still collected as per plan , only that no human uses it anymore. It goes back to mother nature. This is what I call truly a benefiting historical proposition.
