We are Australians, in our eighties, and a French Barge cruise had been on our wish list for years. We discovered Savoir Faire, a barge on the Burgundy Canal, and were advised to pay our deposit quickly as there was another party wishing to charter that whole week on the barge. Accordingly we paid $3,400 in July for a September 2024 cruise. We tried to apply for travel insurance, but this was not possible as the cruise was more than a year ahead.
Unfortunately my wife fell twice on a holiday in Bali in October and realised that she could no longer manage a long overseas flight, or a barge, in a year's time. We informed the Boutique Barge Company in early October that we would have to cancel and requested that if they sold the cabin in the next 11 months they might allow us a refund, less administrative costs.
The response was "We will need to stick to our Terms and Conditions which are that deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable. We afforded as much flexibility for transferring deposits through the travel disruptions caused by the pandemic, but we now need to return to our standard terms and practices and rebuild our business."
Whilst we appreciate that our deposit was non refundable we are very disappointed that no leniency is shown under these circumstances.

Relaxed , friendly, creative , French canal de Bourgogne (Burgundy) on the beautiful Hotel Barge Elisabeth. Captain David , Cuisine extraordinaire Matthew, Guest services Sylvia and the delightful Springer first mate, Lily, will make you feel like welcome and ready to experience France Afloat. Their price point is exceptional and they should be rated more than 3 star given the quality and service.

My wife and I recently completed our first Odysseys tour, their Burgundy Barging trip (Oct. 2019). I have traveled extensively over the last 50 years and have relied on quality tour companies to provide trips that have a high degree of success. Based on conversations with local townspeople, the crew of the Jeanine and Odyssey's own tour director, this trip had no chance of success; it was a disaster. Odyssey's offered this trip during the heart of the very predictable rainy season, which most likely resulted in large profit margins for their company due to off-season pricing. The promise of a barge (and bicycle) trip turned out to be a bus trip. It rained constantly. We were told that we were unable to travel on the advertised canals because either the water in the canals was too low at the beginning of the trip and a day later was too high (not sure of this logic since the rainfall was steady but not overwhelming). In essence they sold us a fraudulent itinerary, analogous to a ski trip to the Rockies in August.
We were stuck on a tiny barge. The carpet in our room was constantly wet during the week. The accommodation was cramped and always damp. The tour director and the crew of the Jeanine (the barge) did an admirable job of trying to salvage this trip, but the conditions were beyond hope.
This trip clearly did not provide the experience described in Odyssey's literature. Normally, I would consider a bad turn of the weather beyond the control of a tour company. In this case, however, I cannot excuse Odyssey. The promise of a canal trip at this time of year was a sham.

I think you should take this problem up with Odysseys Tours directly.
This has nothing to do with the Burgundy Canal.

Our trip on the Savoir Vivre started out rather sad, no water to travel through the locks. Thanks to the Barge Ladies and our fearless Captain Richard, they saved the trip and it became a most memorable adventure. Captain Richard and staff went above and beyond making sure we had a wonderful time. Other guest would make a suggestion as to what they wanted to see or do and they made it happen. Truffle hunting, goat cheese farms, hot air ballooning (first company backed out and in 30 minutes he secured another company).
I cannot say enough as to how marvelous all of this was. Can't wait to do it again.

Dear Bea and Max:
It has been almost one week now since our Barge trip with Wine-Water and I seemingly still have a smile on my face. Thanks to the incredible hospitality of you, Max, Lindsey and Jo we had the trip of a lifetime. The Barge came as advertised. It was spacious, well appointed, and felt like we were on our own private yacht rather than a Barge. Your husband Max is not only an accomplished Captain but one of the nicest human beings we have ever met. From his knowledge of the area to his knowledge of wines (I think he must have been a Sommelier in his last life) to his ability to navigate the Barge thru the locks, he was flawless, professional, compassionate and friendly. What more could we ask for? And Lindsey was similarly gracious, knowledgeable, and caring. She did our laundry every day, cleaned and serviced our rooms each morning, and still made time to serve us wine continuously while we hung out either on deck, in the hot tub or below deck in the lounge/kitchen area. What more can a guest ask for!! And to top it off there was Jo, our own private chef. Her lunches and dinners were beyond belief; I never knew that a Barge could also double as a Michelin starred restaurant but indeed it did in our case. As for the negatives, there truly were none. We had 5 adults on board and felt very comfortable and never crowded, and we could easily have had one more adult and felt the same way. I understand that in 2021 you are converting your living quarters from one master and two regular suites to two master suites (going from maximum of 6 adults to maximum of 4 adults); I think either way works but we (my wife and I) are planning to come back once you do the changeover so couples won’t have to figure out who gets the master suite. For us, it was one couple (me and my wife), and our adult daughter and her two girlfriends so the room configuration worked great as each of their suites had a bathroom that was more than spacious and each had twin beds. Our master suite had a king bed and super large bathroom. Again, we felt like we were on a private yacht and not a Barge. I have left a lot out but hopefully any potential guests/customers who read this will want to book with you and your Barge. I am sure there are other Barge choices out there but I am certain none can match the service and quality of Wine-Water.

What a wonderful week my friends and I had on this chartered barge traversing the Bourgogne Canal in France! Max and Bea and their staff were delightful. Each day included sightseeing historic and beautiful local sights in the villages of Bourgogne. Wine tasting was part of the daily adventures. Our accommodations were comfortable and cleaned daily. We had all meals on the barge (with the exception of a special lunch at a historic chateau). The food and wine served each day was exceptional. We were delighted not to have to change and dress up for dinner out. The barge has indoor and outdoor dining, a hot tub, lounge chairs, and electric and pedal bikes for guest enjoyment. There was ample opportunity for walking and meeting the barge later at one of the locks. We moored each night in a different location. The week was fun, historic, delicious, filled with wine and relaxation. No decisions to make and no unpacking/packing. Very enjoyable!!!

This is a wonderful opportunity to see France without the hustle of traffic.
Owner/operator Bea is a thoughtful organizer who makes a lot happen in the background, while her husband Captain Max is an amazing and personable guide who seems to know everywhere and everyone, including those in the less-touristy areas.
The cuisine of Chef Jo has no rival — her sauces and originality with local fresh produce is incredible.
The boat is very cozy/comfortable— 6 passengers max— and all is kept spiffy with a very likable Lindzi, who is quick with the amenities, refreshments (especially the vast selection of local wines as well as farm-fresh morning eggs) and her fun stories.
A short day trip may include a tour of a local chateau, a market, a cheese/mustard shop in Dijon, a renown winery, a nationally-recognized building or location of historical importance; the other half of the day is spent relaxing on deck in lounge chairs idly watching ducks race the barge through the canal.
This is a holiday to be experienced by everyone!

Is there a barge that is wheelchair accessible?
Skrevet 10. februar 2020
I need to know if this is for a day trip, a self-drive boat rental (more than 1 day) or a hotel barge (7 day cruise).
Is wheel required whilst on board?
Thank you.

Is there any boat operators providing 1-2 hours boat ride through canal? If yes, from where I can board the boat?
Skrevet 14. juni 2018
In the town of Pouilly en Auxois, there is boat trip which also takes you through the tunnel.
Pouilly en Auxois is at the summit of the canal, 44kms from Dijon.

The barge cruises look very relaxing and compleat with never ending of food and wine. Im good with that. But, do you see or visit many historical or interesting sites? Aside from the smaller number of passengers, how does a barge cruise compare with a river cruise? Does it tie up at night?
Thanks.
Skrevet 17. september 2017
All hotel barge cruises offer daily excursions to nearby places of interest such as castles, wine tours, markets, abbeys, cheese and truffle farms etc...
As they generally cruise on the Canal, the barge will moor up in the late afternoon for the night, in a pre-selected peaceful spot. The locks and canals are closed to navigation from early evening, thus promising a peaceful night for all aboard. Depending on the barge, they'll have shore power or battery power for quiet nights.
Another big difference between river and canal cruises concerns the distances covered during your trip. On canals the barges have more locks to pass and travel at a good walking pace, this allowing you to get on and off the barge for cycling, walking or whatever you prefer at frequent intervals. The aim is to explore the area in depth rather than a fleeting tour of many places.
On the river cruise ships, guests must stay on board during cruising.
With an exceptionally high staff-guest ratio, within a short time of boarding, you will feel completely at home. The attentive crew will very soon know your likes and dislikes, whether you prefer tea or coffee, your favourite drink and so on.
The canal cruise is a very different and completely relaxing experience.
Check our web site for more information.
Best regards

Any areas on any of the barges that allow smoking? Question 2 as I would be travelling with my nephew do the cabins have 2 single beds?thanks Gerald. Paech
Skrevet 4. juli 2017
As these barges are considered "hotels" no smoking is allowed inside the barge at any time. A few barges will have a "smoking" area on the sun deck.
However you can go a shore and do what you what.
Most barges can offer twin bed accommodation.
Contact us via the website with your possible cruise dates so that we can give you more information.
Skrevet 4. juli 2017
Are directing your question to people in general and asking which barges they have cruised on, or are you asking us which barges we have worked on?
If you are looking for a list of the best hotel barges, search for the main Burgundy Canal site.
