This is one big beautiful explosion of colour wrapped around a magical Medieval house.

Getting up close to nature in an amazing garden.
okt. 2021
What an amazing garden and so many bees and beautiful planting. We loved the fact there were so many plants all mixed together giving an amazing natural display with such a variety of colour. Lots of pathways to explore leading to all parts of the garden and allowing you to get up close and walk amongst the planting. Such a natural environment and different to the regimented planting at other gardens. A real gem of a place and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Wonderful and exciting

This is not a garden for those who enjoy the somewhat static planting at National Trust properties, this is a garden for gardeners and lovers of alternative planting.
To some it may look overgrown and chaotic, however to me it’s as close as you can get to a natural but cultivated garden. Stunning and should be visited throughout the season to be fully appreciated.

The cafe is superb, the food local and a delight even if a bit crowded at times.
We gather that a new chef started this year and the selection is amazing, the best sausage rolls I’ve ever had.
The only disappointment is the attitude of the woman who works the little shop, we visit about four times per year and have never had a greeting or acknowledgement of any sort, is typically head down engrossed in playing on her phone and even when we go to pay she is curt and uncooperative. Attitude training or a major change needed there.

However the next stop is the nursery and the staff there couldn’t be better, willing to advise and full of knowledge. As is everyone else on the estate from the ticket staff to the guides in the house, we feel that with the one exception, all of the staff work here because they have a dedication to the place and not purely for a salary.
It’s a pleasure that we always look forward to and have been visiting for many years.

A great Gardening experience
sep. 2021
What a fantastic experience.
Fergal and his team have built on what Christopher Lloyd developed which is really wonderful. We've not visited in September before, only in the spring and summer.. It proved a superb decision, to the extent we visited twice. The tropical garden alone was amazing, which we enjoyed battling through. The shear blend of colours amidst the planting themes was quite educational.
The nursery alone is excellent and all priced reasonably, unlike RHS garden nurseries, and a fun tea stop. A really great day out.
We did.t visit the house which we have seen previously

A wonderful, inspirational and justly world renowned garden.

This is the most wonderful and inspirational garden in the most beautiful setting provided by the landscape and the buildings.
The approach to planting combinations as well as bio-diversity has lessons for all of us no matter how big or small a space we have. There is something for everyone to take away. The nursery has a huge range of plants that are hardy and garden ready. Staff provide expert advice so that you can choose the right plants to take home to create your own beautiful space.

Such a let down
sep. 2021
What a let down! The gardens were all overgrown and so disappointing, particularly as this visit was to have been the highlight of our tour. A lot of time and money needs to be spent on them to bring them back to their former glory.

The house was a delight to visit, but hard to hear the initial lady guide, who did go on a bit.

We were members of a coach tour and many people felt the same as us. Maybe things will be better in the future but certainly not worth visiting this year.

Delightful garden, fully of texture and colour.
sep. 2021
The late autumn colour in the garden was a delight. Understandably overgrown in places, the garden is a sequence of varied 'rooms' and spaces full of both colour and texture. There are steps and narrow paths but usually a choice of route is available. I clear map is provided.

The old timbered house, oast house and barns provide a backdrop fully of interest. The site is quite rustic and provides a quaint, rather than polished, experience. The views across the Weald are extensive.

The food and drink provided at the 'lodge' (a small, open barn like building with outdoor seating) is fresh and of good quality. The scotch eggs are definately not for vegetarians with a thick crust of sausage meat.

Access roads are quite narrow - follow the signs. There is plenty of parking though the ground is uneven in places. The better toilets are near the entrance.

Overall a very enjoyable visit - we did not visit the house.

a few bumps but overall a nice day
aug. 2021
overall my recent vistit was wonderful, i did find the paths to be some what hard to navigate but at the same time enjoyed being met by the plants , on my first arrival i did ask a young man a question about students who quite rudely replyed "IM A GARDENER" befor storming off?, this did take me back for a moment, but almost instantly anther young man in a vibrant shirt appeared, apologised and gave us a small tour of the barn garden while explaning the current presures due to the pandemic ,or though this did not justify the response from the other staff member i was more understanding ,but maybe some kind of poster explaining, by the entrance with a donation box? im sure people would be sympathetic, after our stroll round we popped down to the small cafe they have near the nursery ,there was a little bit of a wait but the staff were lovly and the tea was to, we then finished our day buy picking up a few gems from a very well stocked nursery before making our way home . what a nice day out

Very disappointed

I read the reviews for this garden and was really looking forward to my visit. Sadly it’s past it’s best and could do with a huge injection of money to bring it back to its former glory! The pathways are overgrown box borders were overgrown and disheveled. Topiaries no longer held their shape and hedges needed cutting. The plants in the nursery were unkempt and needed watering ! It’s such a perfect setting and I’m sure in its day was a sight to behold but sadly NOT worth the £23 we spent !!

Great Dixter should remove the word "great" from the name of the garden
sep. 2021
My wife & I visited this famous garden last week but left after an hour wondering why we had bothered. Even area was totally choked with weeds and plants that were almost impossible to enjoy as the impression was one of total neglect. The only area that showed any order was, unsurprisingly, the Nurser area as they presumably wanted to SELL the plants!?!
We tried to get into the "Exotic Garden area but despite trying two separate entrances gave up as to make any progress round the internal paths would have required a machete or similar to cut a path through the tangle of plants.
How they could have the cheek to charge the entrance fee that they do is beyond amazing.
If the Gardens were following the latest "craze" to allow the gardens to "rewind" then that would be an excuse for the state the place basin but I don't think that this is the case.
I will never return as I can think of many other things to spend my hard earned money on.
