Beautiful place, if possible have to make part of your Japan itinerary .we took the Nohi bus from Takayama station there and I was a bit worried as we did not have reserved seats on the bus , I had tried to book them before leaving but they were all gone so we took the non reserved bus there . Left our bags at the luggage storage at the station and walked in town for 3 hours , took a shuttle to the town overlook , went inside one of the old houses and just walked everywhere . Stunning scenery . We then took the Nohi bus which I had already reserved on to Kanazawa .

This village is a UNESCO heritage site with famous Gassho-Zukuri houses. I suggest you pay to enter a couple of the houses with very interesting historical items on each floor. When you walk amongst the houses you feel the history and highly recommend you visit this place

Shirakawago was a bucket list item for me. Though there are a lot of tourists here, you can still sense the historic significance of the town and the buildings. We walked through the Wada house which provides more detail on the history of the area. We took the shuttle bus to the observation deck. They will take your picture there and you can keep a small one for free, and then you can purchase a 5x7 with a digital copy.
We did not go on an organized tour. It is very easy to walk around the town on your own. I do think 2-3 hours is enough time to cover the highlights. We took the bus from Kanazawa. There are coin lockers at the bus terminal, but we found it is actually cheaper to go to the baggage storage building behind the bus terminal and ask the man there to store your bags.
Overall, I think it is worth going to if you are interested in history or culture.

We will stop over at Shirakawago on our way from Kanazawa to Takayama. Please could you tell me whether 4 hours will be enough to get a flavour of the place?

4 hours will be certainly long enough. Suggest you look at a couple of the houses you can enter to get a feeling of what the place was like in days past. I went inside a couple that you pay to have a look at but well worth the small cost. Enjoy.
Hi, I will be going to Shirakawago this February 14th but the weather forecast says it will be raining on that day. Does it mean there won't be any snow? Because the lowest temperature will be 5°C. I really want to see the snow :( ...

Hi, will be visiting shirakawa-go this Feb 2, 2020 and will be using the 3 days shoryudo highway bus pass from nagoya. Here are my questions:
1. Can i still see snow on Feb 2?
2. What’s the earliest time we can depart from nagoya going to takayama then shirakawa-go?
3. What’s the last trip from shirakawa-go back to nagoya on Feb 2?
4. How’s the weather on the first week of February?
Will be spending the whole day between Takayama and Shirakawago from Nagoya.
Thanks 😊

there should be snow early feb as its still cold but best to check the weather. i think its very stretch to go takayama and shirakawago in a day.. unless u dun mind just a couple of hours spent on each location. pls consider winter days are shorter-best to check with your transport provider on timing as they may change.

Hi I'm going to Shirakawa Go on 2 May 2020.
1. Can I see sakura on that day in shirakawago?
2. Can I go to shirakawago from kanawa by bus at night?
And does it has illumination light like the winter season?
3. I will stay in kanazawa, and will go to tonami too. Is it right to stay in kanazawa? If I stay in takayama, it will be to far to go tonami tulip park and kanazawa castle.

1. Unfortunately, Cherry blossoms are in April.
2. You can go to Shirakawago from Kanazawa by highway bus.
The illumination is during winter season.
3. From Kanazawa to Tonami, you can use bullet train from Kanazawa to Takaoka, then use either local bus or taxi or local train to Tonami.
Use Johana line local train about 22 minutes from Takaoka station. The train and the rail is very old but you can enjoy country train and costs about 300yen.
By taxi, takes about 15 minutes and cost approximately 5000JPY.
Which bus operator offers direct bus service from Nagoya to Shirakawa-go? Do you have to make reservation for the bus tickets before you go or can you still tickets on the same day?
I notice that there are two bus stops in Shirakawa-go - the main stop down in the village, and another stop further up called Hatogaya. Is it worth stopping at Hatogaya and visit that area before coming down to the village?

I don’t know anything about the light up. We were disappointed with our daytime visit, but perhaps in January there will be more snow. We spent a few days in Kanazawa. We enjoyed the garden, the villa in it and the samurai quarter with its ancient houses. Food was good, too.

I'm going to visit Shirakawago in the middle of April 2019. Can I still see the snow?

Most snow should've melted by mid April. So, the chances that you'd see snow aren't very high. There may be some remaining snow on the field, but it doesn't look nice.

Im planning to visit Takayama and stop by Shirakawago on the way back to Kanazawa. Im not a big fan of having to time my trip after a bus schedule. Is it possible to buy reserved seat for the bus from Shirakawago bus terminal or do I have to by tickets in advanced. And is it adviced not to do this because buses are always full?

You still can change the bus timing subject to seat availability and it is free of charge.
