We still managed to catch the snow corridor in its glory. Perhaps, it may not be a full snow experience but it was cold enough for us.
Even though it was quite difficult for the elderly in our group to walk up the various parts, we managed slowly. It was just our luck that it rained and windy whilst we were on the dam crossing. Still, it was an awesome experience.
I would like to do it again!

Another one for lovers of nature and/or photography fanatics. Lots of scenic view of mountains, trees, waters and the sky. This tour allows you to climb up the different mountains via the bus, the tram, the cable car and some walking. It will end with the famous ice walls that will look pretty on a good day.
Unfortunately for me, the weather was not too kind. The whole place was cold with thick fog/mist. No view to take in.

This is the most memorable highlight of our 10-day Central Japan trip. The views are spectacularly breathtaking and gorgeous and is must-do if you are in Central Japan. Throughout the route, we are on our own exploration and each of us was only armed with a Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route Timetable to guide us on the timing of the transportation at each station.
When our local tour guide briefed us at our hotel one day before the trip, we were in a daze, did not manage to comprehend what he was saying until we came here to experience ourselves. But the guide kept reminding us not to split and get lost and be punctual at the last station where the coach driver will be waiting for us at between 2.30 pm and 3 pm. He also reminded us to buy some food for our breakfast as we had to set off early from our hotel.
The following morning, our local guide reported a good news that the weather will be fine for the day and we should be able to enjoy our trip but reminded us again not to get lost as the place would be crowded and to arrive punctually at the last station latest by 3 pm.
The coach driver set off from the hotel at 6.30 am and we arrived at the very first station Tateyama Station at about 7 am. Our last destination where our coach driver would be waiting for us is at Ogizawa. Between Tateyama station and Ogizawa, there are 8 other viewing destinations: Bijodaira, Midagahara, Tengudaira, Murodo, Daikanbo, Kurobedaira, Kurobeko and Kurobe Dam. The transportation mode available between the 8 sub-destinations are cable car, highland bus, trolley bus, ropeway, cable car and electric bus.
Our travel agency had booked the entrance tickets for us before hand. Each entrance ticket for the Alpine route cost 10,940 yen (about S$110/-)Thus, we just need to collect our tickets at the first station and commenced our trip. We were reminded not to lost our ticket as the staff need to scan our ticket at each embarkation point.
We took the cable car from Tateyama station to Bijodaira and then changed to the Teteyama Highland Bus for our upward route to highest peak at Murodo. At 2450 meters above sea, Murodo (室堂, Murodō) is the highest point along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, offering fantastic views of the Tateyama Mountain Range. As the highland bus slowly pushed her way up the mountain range, our horizon open up to the spectacular view of the mountain range from the bus window. However, the bus window was tinted and the photographs taken along the bus route tended to be tinted in green colour. We could alight at the bus stop at Midagahara and Tengudaira but we did not. The mountain range scenery reminded me of the Tibetan song - 天路.
At Murodo, I found myself lost in the snowy white of this wonderland. As I balanced myself in the slippery snowy and icy floor of the pristine and gorgeous view, there was a sense of euphoria enveloped me. All my group members were hysterically captivated by the snow wall and there was no stop clicking the camera. My advice is to spend more time at this Murodo as the views here are gorgeous and spectacularly beautiful .
From Murodo Bus Terminal, about 10-minutes walking distance, there is a Mikuriga-ike Pond but we missed this picturesque location. Instead, we rushed to take the tunnel trolley bus and the ropeway to Daikanbo (大観峰) and followed by Kurobedaira. The Ropeway provides great panoramic bird's eye views of the surrounding mountain scenery. We had a short teabreak at Daikanbo. We enjoyed a 360 degree panoramic view of the mountain scenery at the platform above the station. The views at the Kurobe Dam is also gorgeous but the ascending stairs to the view point was discouraging and I realized the attraction seem not very senior friendly with no escalator or lift up.
We finally made it slightly early ahead from our tight schedule.

It’s a beautiful place. Although the journey is far away, it’s definitely worth a visit. You need to take 6 types of transportation to cross it. It’s a great experience. Of course, it’s best to come from April to June to enjoy the scenery of Snow Valley. It’s hard to imagine that the hard work of the staff before the mountain was opened resulted in such a unique scenery. The timetable published on the official website is very accurate. You may need to consider the queuing time when there are many people, so you need to pay special attention to it. However, it is not difficult to travel independently. If you have enough time, you can consider visiting Shinano Omachi and Toyama at both ends. Staying for one night will give you the most time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is approximately 100 km long and passes through the Northern Alps to join Omachi (Nagano) with Toyama. It is famous for the magnificent Kurobe Dam, transiting using 6 modes of transport to traverse and of course the snow wall of Oki No Otani. This is the highlight for our Your Group here in late-April. We have stayed overnight at Nagano ( Kurobe SunValley Hotel ) so we started from Omachi side towards Toyama side.
We arranged to reach early, about 8:30am so it is less packed. From the Ogizawa entrance it was first an electric bus to the Kurobe Dam. A magnificent site indeed (my separate Review) which we spent some time.
At Kurobeko sta we took the cable car upwards to Kurobedaira. The only underground cable car in Japan, it brought us where the best part will be ; the Ropeway. 16 mins of mid-air unobstructed view and we reached Daikanobo. It was early lunch for us at Restaurant Tateyama. Seems to be the only large eatery here while the rest are smaller cafés. Yet there was a large crowd! There are also many shops where you can get your wonder souvenirs!
Then it was tunnel trolley bus again to Murodo and mind you this is the highest altitude trolley bus in Japan! Reaching the sta it was much time spent here; the snow wall or Oki No Otani.
Being the highlight of the trip as we walked the 14m high corridor from one end to the other and u-turn back. Feels so great! From here a winding and long Highland bus journey brought us downward close to a 1200m descend, by now most of us were quite tired & dozed off intermittently. But there were beautiful scenery & captivating views of the surrounding landscape enroute. Finally reaching Bjodaira after more than 40 mins we took the last mode of transport – cable car again. About 8 mins of cramped side-side with many other visitors we finally reached Tateyama sta.
We are now in Toyama prefecture, and our coach already waiting us!
Definitely an unforgettable experience for many of us..

The long-awaited trip to Tateyama Kurobe finally came true. It’s endless as far as the eye can see, it’s really broad and beautiful, oh! This scene is not something we can see in subtropical Taiwan. It is too wide and vast. It is really incomparable to Hehuan Mountain. It is so beautiful. It is really worth coming. It is so big, beautiful and broad-minded!

I was apprehensive about going on this route as I'm not a fan of trekking or hiking, ropeway etc per se. I must say I was blown away by the orderliness of the whole trip, how every station, viewpoint is equipped with clear instructions, clean toilets, etc. Most importantly, once we were at morudo, the view was spectacular.
I didn't expect snow but luckily I wore the right gear. It was breath-taking. So much so I want to return again to do the full route.
We brought our 5 yo with us, so we only dod half the route.

We set off early from Ogisawa having already booked the tickets online. There were very few people around at 8am. The journey up to Murodo by various means was fantastic as were the views.
At the top we hiked to the viewpoint which was a little challenging without snow hiking gear, but worth the trek.
The lakes also offered great views but it had started to get crowded by then. The snow corridor was closed and is only accessible in spring.

Usually this route is popular in Spring but I think it was also amazing in autumn. It was truly incredible to ascend and descend so many metres and observe the according changes in climate/environment.
At the time we went autumn leaves were at its peak at the base (Shomyu Falls) and there was a metre or 2 of fresh snow at the top (Murodo) then back down to greenery surrounding the emerald-turquoise Kurobe dam.
Multi-modal transport experience is both a novelty and tiring but there are frequent breaks. It is possible in one day (started from Tateyama St at 0830, to last bus leaving Ogizawa at 1700) but if you are able to stay overnight along the route (eg. Mt Tateyama hotels) there will be plenty more to experience and less pressure for the weather to work out on the day of your trip.

Hi, I am planning a trip from Tateyama Station to the snow wall in early May 2024. Can I visit the snow wall and then turn back to Tateyama station. If I have a full day there, how far should I go beyond the snow wall before turning back?
Skrevet 24. november 2023
Yes, you van always turn back to the original route you came from. As far as I understand, snow wall is almost the last part of the route. I didn't get to the snow wall, I stopped at morudo.

I am planning to take the Tateyama Alpine route from Tateyama to Murudo one way where I will stay 2 nights. One Day 1, i would like to go from Tateyama-Murudo one way, then return Murudo-Kurobe Dam. On day 2, i want to stay in Murudo. On Day 3. i want to travel one-way back from Murudo to Tateyama. The website seems to indicate I need to buy Tateyama-Kurobe Dam return tickets, as i cannot find Murudo-Kurobe Dam return ticket. Also, can i buy one way ticket from Murudo-Tateyama from Murudo station? Thank You

What time does the first mode of transportation leave from Ogizawa Station?
Skrevet 22. mai 2023
Hi all. We plan to do the Alpine Route either on April 16 or 17 from Toyama side.
We go to book the ticket via their web ticket system and found out that both days are full
Our question is that can we do the walk in to buy ticket or if it the web booking is full, it means that there will be no ticket to be sold at the station.
Thank you for your help.

Hello! I am currently trying to book tickets on the Alpine Route. Following the instructions provided though, when I got to 'Make a new reservation' it says "There is no item available to reserve" so I don't know how I can book tickets. Any ideas?! Thanks, Kate

Hi. plan to do the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route early October 2023. Plan to travel from Kyoto to Toyama, overnight in Toyama then do the various transportation modes in the TKAR and some hikig then overnight in Murodo area perhaps the Tengudaira Lodge. Then finish the TKAR and take a bus to Nagano and then bullet train back to Tokyo......The questions I have 1) is there a 2 day pass that would allow the overnight stopover in the mountains and how much is this? 2) how much time should be allocated for the Murodo - Shinano omachi section of the route? 3) If staying in a hotel in Toyama do they do luggage forwarding to nagano train station?
Skrevet 8. mars 2023
I would like to know if is there a chance that I able to forward my baggage from Toyama Dentetsu station to Matsumoto Toyoko Inn? In between, I will be staying Murodo for one night.
Thanks :)
