The towering five-storied pagoda is a symbol of the region. The admission fee is slightly higher (1500 yen), so you can see the five-storied pagoda from higher ground. You can also see the streets of Ikaruga Town.

Horyuji is the oldest wooden building in the world and is said to have been influenced by Hellenistic culture. There are many highlights, or rather the site is large. I walked around a lot. It is a place that always appears in middle school and high school Japanese history, so I was able to enjoy going around the temple, probably because I didn’t know it.
I think the neighboring parking lots are relatively conscientious. Admission fees are quite high, though. I still think it's worth it...

We were - on the same day - here and in Nara. Here very few tourists and almost all Japanese, in Nara there is total delirium. This temple is the oldest wooden temple in Japan, year 670, perfectly preserved. A very large complex, it extends over 220 thousand square meters. Go there, it's worth it.

This World Heritage Site can easily be accessed by train from Nara (train journey about 10min). From Horyuji train station it's about 20min to walk. The grounds are vast and the entrance fee is absolutely worth it. Make sure you set aside enough time. I recommend paying a visit to Chuguji Temple nearby as well.

This is the head temple of the Komyo sect of Buddhism in Hokkeji-cho, Nara City. During the Nara period, it was the so-kokubun nunnery of Japan. It has no mountain name.
The principal image is the Eleven-Headed Kannon, and it was founded by Empress Komyo.
It originally belonged to the Shingon Ritsu sect, but left the sect in 1999 (Heisei 11) and became known as the Komyo sect. It is a dignified nunnery that is counted among the three great temples of Yamato. Empress Komyo built what was originally the residence of Fujiwara no Fuhito as the so-kokubun nunnery.
It was known as the temple of the Lotus Sutra's expiation of sins, and flourished with seven halls.
It declined with the move of the capital to Heian, and was remodeled to its current structure by Toyotomi Hideyori's mother, Yodo-dono. The main hall is a Japanese-style Buddhist hall that was rebuilt during the Momoyama period, and houses a wooden standing statue of the Eleven-Headed Kannon (national treasure) and a wooden carved seated statue of Vimalakirti (national treasure).
The garden is said to have been built in the early Edo period, and Yokobue-do Hall is said to be where Yokobue, famous for the tale of his tragic love with Takiguchi Nyudo, lived after he became a monk. The temple is also known for the wooden eleven-faced Kannon standing statue (National Treasure), said to have been carved based on Empress Komyo, and the adorable dog-shaped amulets made from goma ash mixed with clay and painted with patterns.

Hello, thank you for a great review of Horyuji Temple. I'm going to visit it next year. I hope you can answer my question. Actually - two questions. I am an avid photographer and also an amateur movie maker. Please, let me know if photography and video is allowed at this temple. Have you seen people taking photos? Second - I'd like to bring in a camera tripod. Have you seen anybody using those? Some places don't allow tripods. Thanks, Albert

Some areas allow photography and filming...other areas do not. If I were you, I would contact them ahead of time and explain what it is you would like to do to see if they may make an exception for you. I did see people with tripods, but I also remember signs prohibiting them in places. I hope this helps. It is a wonderful and fascinating place to visit. Enjoy!
