I loved the hike up the Mt Zozo to the top of the spectacular Kotohira-gu (aka Konpira-san/Kompira-san) shrine complex. Yes it's 1368 stairs to the very top, but don't be intimidated by that. Firstly, there are lots of places to sit and rest, most with beautiful views of shrines or the view down the mountain. There's also a cafe/restaurant within the complex, and plenty of washrooms. Lastly the steps are fairly shallow.
There are gorgeous views down the mountainside throughout the walk, including a beautiful view over Kotohira from Gohon-Gu, the main shrine. Walking the last 583 steps from Gohon-Gu to the shrine of Oku-Sha at the top takes you through a forested area (any toilets in this area are rustic, and there is nowhere to buy water in this part, so be forewarned...) At Oku-Sha, you can see the face of Tengu and Karasu Tengu, protruding from the rock (see pics).
I went in late fall (early December) and the red maples and the fallen yellow ginkgo leaves were spectacular. There are 3 museums on site, Omote-Shoin Art Museum, the Museum of Takahashi Yuichi, and Homotsu-kan (the Treasure Hall); which you can either visit separately, or choose to buy an admission ticket for all three. I went to all 3 and particularly enjoyed Omote-Shoin which featured beautiful shoji painted by Edo-period painter Maruyama Okyo. All 3 museums are relatively small and were worth a visit.
Overall I spent 5 1/2 hours at Konpira-san including the short walk to/from Kotohira station, hiking up to the top shrine at a leisurely pace, touring the 3 museums, stopping for lunch at the base of Mt Zozo, and taking tons of photos. You could easily do the walk in half the time if you were so inclined.

The stairs are long, so don't push yourself too hard, but make sure you have some determination to climb them. If you have time, it's better to go when the weather is nice to get a better view.

You can reach it by climbing 785 stone steps from Omotesando.
I visited with my friend and his wife, and we were told that the goshuin stamps could only be obtained at the Okunoin Temple (which is about 500 steps up), so we decided to climb further up.
My husband and I were satisfied and headed down the mountain right away, but I think we waited about 45 minutes to meet up at the foot of the mountain.
I was very satisfied because I was able to visit on my own.

Although the shrine does not seem to have a particularly high status, it is extremely well-known as a tourist destination, including the town around the temple, and is also well-known as the guardian deity of maritime transport.
After climbing a flight of 785 stone steps, you can reach the main shrine, which is located halfway up Mount Zozu. It was rebuilt about 150 years ago, so it has a nice antique feel to it. We were lucky enough to catch the day of the "Great Shimenawa Dedication and Replacement" ceremony, and were able to see the parishioners of Takamatsu Shrine climbing the stone steps while keeping the rope straight.

This shrine, affectionately known as "Konpira-san," is worshipped as the god of agriculture and the protector of the sea.
You can only reach the main shrine by climbing 785 stone steps from the main approach. There are another 583 stone steps to the inner shrine. It's a bit of an ordeal in the summer, but it's rewarding. Comfortable shoes, a towel, and a drink are essential.
There are many sights to see along the way, such as the Omote Shoin, which features a sliding screen painting by Maruyama Okyo, and the Shinbasha, so the fun outweighs the difficulty.
The view from the main shrine is amazing, with a panoramic view of Sanuki Fuji and the Great Seto Bridge in the distance.

To reach the main sanctuary you have to climb 785 stone steps. At the beginning of the journey you find souvenir shops, tea houses, coffee, etc... and then it clears up to give way to the vegetation, the cherry trees. If you go with time, it is a walk that you can do calmly, with intermediate stops, taking photographs, admiring the place, feeling the energy...
Once you reach 785 steps, you can continue up to 1,368.
It's worth it.
