In the 1950s a popular survey was conducted in Spain to choose the most poetic villages. The first was for Madrigal de las Altas Torres in the Castilian plateau of abulense, perhaps under the influence of being the birthplace of Isabel La Católica. And second place was occupied by Alcalá de los Gazules from the Cadiz mountain range of Los Alcornocales. But it is to Alcalá de los Gazules that he dedicated his poetry Lorca...
ALCALÁ DE LOS GAZULES is perched in the heights with its white houses in the center of the province of Cadiz, where we are offered a differentiated landscape, between a hilly and vegas area and the mountains, where its history has elapsed, a history that can date back to the Upper Paleolithic, maintaining rock engravings like the Taja de los Hierros, and abundant stones and polished axes that testify to this. However, the first stable population was in the Mesa del Esparragal, where the Iberian city of Lascuta was located, famous for having found on its site the famous Bronze of Lascuta, in which was engraved the edict that granted freedom to the servants of the nearby city of Hasta. The Romans named it Regina and the Arabs Al-Qalá, meaning "castle" or "fortress". The king of Granada ceded this city to the line of the Gazula, of Berber origin, from which it takes its name.
It was conquered by Ferdinand III in 1248 and eventually became part of the domain of the Duke of Medinaceli. In 1264 the city was reconquered by the Christian hosts of Alfonso X the Wise, who in his “Chronicle” is the first to give it the name of Alcala de los Gazules, and years later it would come under the Lordship of the Ribera, Dukes of Alcala, who exercised the secular patronage by building churches and convents. The city played a leading role during the War of Independence, creating the Mounted Militia to combat French troops. And it was in 1810 that the population was massacred by Napoleonic troops. In 1876 the Villa acquired the title of city and it was in 1984 when it was declared Historical-Artistic Complex.
As one of the white villages, whose route it belongs to, its Listing on the Sky is very attractive. Within the urban complex it offers interesting elements, but it is worth noting three: the Castle (of military construction Almohad, was partially destroyed during the War of Independence and nowadays wants to be put afloat), the Major Church of San Jorge (located in the Plaza Alta, is the epicenter from which the city emerged, and gives us two good facades that well deserve to be preserved) and the Convent of Santo Domingo.
And in the vicinity, we must not miss visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Saints, which must be put in connection with the Battle of Pagán (1339) and the Battle of Salado (1340), one of the most important battles of the last period of the Reconquista: in it, the combined forces of Castile and Portugal decisively defeated the Benimerines, last Maghreb kingdom that would try to invade the Iberian Peninsula. The chronicle of Alfonso XI tells that at dawn on the day of the battle the Christian host could see a pendon hanging from a tree with the image of Jesus Crucified. The Battle was considered a miraculous event and in his memory the Humiliator Cross was raised with the trisage "Santus, Santus, Santus". This stone is today on the foundations of the church.
The building, although its constructive origin dates back to the 14th century, owes its current trace to the 17th century. The rectangular church, covered with barrel vaults is topped with a small chancel, covered by a half-orange dome on pechina beautifully decorated. The chapel is presided over by the dressing room of the Virgin and dates from 1769. It is of octagonal plan with dome of half orange, with decorated wood painted colors and mirror, topped by a break of the sky on which hangs the Divine Dove. It is interesting to note that the sanctuary concentrates the largest and most interesting collection of ex-votos in Andalusia, made up of paintings painted in different techniques (and that some date from the year 1758) with the miracles granted to each person or family.
A place in the middle of the field that oozes peace, that emanates the faith of the Alcalaínos, as the people of Alcalá de los Gazules are known, a town in the middle of Cadiz that oozes poetry.
