There loads to see in this famous, old place. The main house in impressive, with low ceilings and tight staircase. There’s also a beautifully decorated, lovely chapel. Nice cafe nearby and a great maze for all ages. A great place to visit for all ages.

My family visited Traquair House during their Christmas event which involved a visit to Santa.
As a previous visitor and 'friend' of Traquair (seasonal pass customers), we felt our Christmas experience was just 'okay'.
Two points during our visit made this trip a bit meh.
Firstly, having booked online for our 1 year old to see Santa at the selected time slot of 10:40, we were somehow not on the register. They did manage to fit us in around 11am though. Surely the reason for booking is a guaranteed spot?
Secondly, the Traquair cafe.. The few times we've used this cafe has always ended in disappointment.
During this recent visit we asked a member of staff to heat up a small pot of baby food in the microwave for 20seconds. They refused. Apparently health & safety doesn't allow this. It was the end of November. Very cold conditions (not just outside!) and our son needed something warm. One could actually see your breath in the cafe as it was that cold, but no, baby food being heated in the microwave was not permitted. Very poor attitude in my opinion. And our hot beverages took 19 minutes to come upon ordering. We were only waiting on drinks as we chose not to order any foods. We set a timeframe of 20 minutes, and if they didn't arrive by then, we were walking out. So we did get our drinks before departing.
The house was full of stalls with local craftspeople & baked goods which was nice to wander round and have a spy.
We will happily visit the house & grounds again next year but will probably give the cafe a miss.

What an amazing place! Hard to believe it still stands after hundreds of years; a testament to the loving care of the home, which remains lived in. The house and adjacent estate buildings, are filled with beautiful furnishings, fascinating and intriguing items; some that may have even belonged to Mary Queen of Scots, who stayed at the house. It’s a self guided tour; no fancy gadgets to fumble with. I highly recommend watching the video about the history of the house, before you start your self guided tour. You can easily spend a few hours here, if you really want to slowly make your way around each floor, and closely admire all there is to see. There are stairwells, uneven floors and lots of displays, so I recommend comfortable shoes. The gardens and nearby trail is worth a visit as well. This site can be reached on foot, from town, through a lovely and well traveled trail, or by car. I don’t believe this site to be suitable for children, or those with complicated mobility conditions, though you can always inquire ahead. Wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes; it was a bit chilly in some areas of the house. There’s a great brewery and small gift shop on site as well. Well worth a visit.

We were lucky with the weather. Visited the Grounds, Gift shop and brewery shop.
The Maze is tremendous, we got to the 4 sub centres but not the Centre.
The Gift shop and Brewery shop were reasonable for price and selection of goods.
Great to see the Bear gates and the views from the gardens were breath taking.
We will be back to take a tour at the house.

On entering the grounds we were met by the ticket office and Norman. Norman was the nicest gentleman I had met in a long time. He greeted us with a smile, and was very informative about the house, grounds and what we could expect during our visit. As a disabled visitor I was a bit puzzled to find the disabled parking (of which there is only 3 spaces) was about a 5 min walk from the house when there was a carpark closer. When we asked the lady at the entrance to the house, we were told there needs to be parking for the staff! Anyway...our first stop was the entrance hall and a film about the houses history. It's well worth watching if you can get a seat. You are free to roam the different rooms which are on 3 floors. The old stone stairs are uneven so be careful. There is plenty of information sheets and booklets telling you about the rooms, items, pictures, etc. The wooden baby cradle had to be my favourite, it's carvings are very intriquite. On leaving the main house you can visit the dining room, chapel, laundry and shop which are within the two wings. Unfortunatley due to the weather, we didn't get around the gardens or maze.
We also visited the coffee shop where we had a light lunch. It doesn't say on the menu but you can have sandwiches/toasties on normal bread. You don't have to have sourdough. The food was lovely and friendly service.

Hidden away in a quiet area in the Tweed valley. Sadly the house is now a bit tired but very interesting. Worth looking at the library and books.
Lovely cafe and very friendly staff. Value for money.

We had visited Traquair house, many years ago, but it was in the off season and the house was not open for touring. This time, however, the house was open, and I must say, it is simply amazing!
There are three floors that are brimming with historical artifacts that would compete with holdings in the National Museum. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed here for a brief time, and the room where she stayed, albeit updated over time, holds the cradle that James I/VI slept in as an infant. The museum room on the third floor has a cross and rosary that belonged to Mary, as well as many artifacts that date back to the 1500s.
There are so many books among the family possessions, that there are two libraries to hold them.
The family were Jacobites, so there is a small room where a priest would have stayed, and a hidden staircase for a quick escape if need be.
The back of the house features a maze, which is actually of new construction, sometime in the 1980's, but certainly a fun time to explore. The grounds are vast, with walking trails that lead along sheep in the fields, and horses as well.
There is a brewery on the grounds, and the family continues to brew their own line of ales right on the property. There is also a small cafe on the grounds that has quite a large menu for a snack to a proper lunch, all made fresh on the premises.
Traquair House continues to be privately owned, and the family bears the responsibility for the upkeep. The contents of the house, in addition to the beautiful grounds for walking, make it well worth the visit.

Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit the house, but walked from Innerleithen through the lovely woods and had the most delicious lunch at the cafe. The blond bespectacled waitress was so apologetic as they were short staffed that day. However, she worked so hard, and was so efficient that there was no delay. A great place to stop off. Delicous broccoli and Stilton Soup and a wonderfully fresh cream filled Victoria Sponge - fabulous!!

Traquair House is fascinating ! Steeped in the history of the Clan Stuart and Bonnie Prince Charlie, with highly knowledgeable guides. Highly recommend a visit here. The brewery is an added bonus. There are a couple of craft workshops, including a gorgeous silver jewellery shop and an interesting pottery. Something for everyone. The small coffee shop/cafe is worth a visit as they have a variety of snacks, cakes and scones all home made. Staffed by friendly, happy, staff

Yes, we are less than 10 mins by car from Glentress. Dogs are welcome on a lead and we are open 7 days a week from 11am - 5pm. Hope this reaches you in time as I only just saw your message.

hi there. we are plannning a visit on the morning of 18th June. However we have an Alpaca Trek booked for 2pm at Velvet Hall and wondered if, seeing as you do not open until 11am, could we realistically tour the house and do the maze etc in 2.5hrs? Or is it preferable to have more than 3 - 4 hours ?
Would appreciate any comments before I pre book the tickets online
Many thanks

Many thanks for your enquiry, i'm delighted that you are considering to visit us on the 18th June and think that you will certainly have enough time to achieve both. We normally suggest an hour's visit in the House itsself and a futher hour in the Grounds and shops. If you wish to use the 1745 Cottage Restaurant then you may wish to factor this is as well.
With best wishes

Hi What are the charges to see around the House and Brewery and is it accessible to people with mobility problems. Thank you.

Cannot remember think it was about eight pound each. The main house has many tight narrow stairs. The grounds, cafe and lower floors will be ok best give them a ring to be on the safe side, we liked it.
