Lovely reserve, well designed walks
sep. 2021 • Par
NWT Hickling Broad visitor centre with plenty of parking. The NWT have paths of differing lengths through the woods and alongside the broad.
£5 per adult to enter the walks from the visitor centre.
The paths were well marked and lovely to walk on and along. Many vantage points and hides dotted about the reserve.
Dragonflies everywhere and on this day numerous red admirals and speckled wood butterflies. Large and small whites. No swallowtails to see unfortunately. They are best seen in May/June but are still present in July and August, only September if they have had a particularly good year and there has been a good summer.
If you love nature this is a great place for bigguns and littluns.

Magical Evening boat trip
jul. 2021
Our evening boat trip from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust visitor centrewas magical. Gliding through narrow channels in the reeds to the open broad. Initially it was a warm and then the sun went down and a full moon reflected in the water, quiet and still except for bird song. John was a really good leader and all our questions were answered. We learnt so much about the history and present conservation. We saw spoonbills, egrets ,godwits, marsh harrier and lots of other birds from the 2 hides only accessible by boat. We also saw flowers and insects in the Reed beds and a swallowtail caterpillar hiding on its favourite food milk parsley. A really special experience. I highly recommend it

An ambience to cherish!

An absolutely stunning place to engage with nature. Fabulous sounds, interesting birds, swallowtail butterflies and, if you're lucky, a bittern. You don't have to be a twitcher to go here because the walk through the reedbeds is unique in itself.

Evening boat trip
jun. 2021
We did the 2 hour evening boat trip with John from the NWT. It was an overcast and drizzly evening but worth arriving an hour or so before the trip to try and see some birds in the reserve. The boat was smallish and quite wet so in similar weather waterproof trousers would have been a help. Three couples on our trip. I suspect the evening trip may not be a great one for children unless they are very keen naturalists. Masks are worn by all if a member of a group requests it but nobody did in our group. John took us out to hides only accessible by boat and to the tower lookout. We saw marsh harriers, a water deer, reed buntings and avocets. No otters or kingfishers, unfortunately. We also learned about the history of the broad, the reed cultivation and how the NWT manages the land which was all interesting. Overall, an enjoyable if damp evening trip and John was an excellent guide.

Fabulous evening on Hickling Broad
jun. 2021
Fabulous part of the world, an outstanding place to observe nature. Swallowtail butterflies close to visitor centre, plenty of birds including marsh harrier, cuckoo, hobby, spotted redshank, collared pratincole, warblers and much more. Took an evening boat trip with John, highly recommended. John was very knowledgeable and empathic to needs of those on boat. Visited two hides (only accessible by boat) and the tower for a fab view over this huge reserve. Definitively a must do if you are staying nearby.

My wife has wanted to see the swallowtail again for the first time since she was a child. We didn’t expect to see such a beautiful place with a beautiful boat trip! We loved it and did see the swallowtail and hen harriers.
W3 came away thinking what a great experience.
Thanks for our boat captain!

A really excellent visit. The staff (volunteers) were very welcoming and gave us a helpful introduction. The walk is well signposted and is easy walking, mostly in the sun but there is some shade. It is just a very relaxing place to visit, great views and copious number of birds and butterflies. Clean toilets and a nice shop with more pleasant volunteers. Highly recommend.

Beautiful place
mai 2021
This is a beautiful place with a NWT visitor centre, picnic area and toilets. It cost £5 to enter the reserve but it's well worth the money despite the hides and some paths being closed due to Covid restrictions. The paths are easy to walk on and well sign posted. The viewing area is comfortable and the views are amazing. We sat there for a considerable amount of time simply taking in the view. As we walked further on we suddenly came upon a small herd of stunning wild horses which graze on the reserve. It's definitely a holiday must do. One word of warning though. The roads to the reserve are very narrow and bendy but there are passing points. You just have to be aware of traffic that might be coming towards you.

Lovely place terrible road in
okt. 2020
Can I say the road is very narrow with hardly any passing places. We went today the staff were lovely but burst our tyre on someone leaving a rock on one of the few passing places so we never actually got to see the broad but as I said the staff were lovely and couldn`t have been more helpful
