Visited this Fort whilst researching husband’s family history, his grandfather joined North West Mounted Police before WWI and this was one of places he served. The location is about an hours drive off HWY1 but is well signposted, make sure you have plenty of fuel!! The welcome centre has a large car park and once inside there are some exhibits, a small gift shop, theatre - showing history of Fort. Desk manned by Park Rangers who are very knowledgeable. There is a courtesy van to take you down to the Fort or you can walk, was very hot the day we were there, and I have mobility problems so this was very welcome. We then had a guided tour with one of the re-en actors who again really knew his history and made the place come to life. Got the bus back up and had a coffee in cafeteria which is small and doesn’t have much choice in the way of food etc.

Excellent way to spend a couple of hours, visit the information centre then onto the guided tour of the fort. Very informative, the story of the massacre and its consequences. Good walks from the campground up into the hills. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I spent our anniversary in nearby Elkwater, and decided to Google how to get to Fort Walsh. Don’t do it. After navigating backroads, fields and literally driving through someone’s yard, we eventually made it. The scenic drive is amazing, and the parking lot clean and spacious. The newer interpretive center with museum is rich with history and the staff were informative. We had a quick basic lunch (nothing fancy, wraps and hotdogs), then we proceeded to walk the path to the fort. It was a bit of a trek down to the gates. We very much enjoyed the buildings, history and the inviting staff who answered all our questions. We strolled slightly outside the fort and walked on the Métis trail. It was very good. Once we got to the top of the hill by the center, we sat in the “red” chairs and took in the scenery. It’s a well worth it trip to see, and overflowing with Canadian history. If you have a chance, see this if you can!

Visited on fay trip while camping @ Cypress Hills. Nice display in museum @ top. Short film was good. Liked trying on the buffalo coat and NWMP replica jacket. Disappointed that there was no info at specific buildings, no tours and no interpreters. Wear good shoes b/c you have to go down short trail to Fort.

In all our years of going to Cypress Hills, we had never ventured to Fort Walsh. Even the drive thru the ‘badlands’ to get there, with cows on the road and the ‘Texas Gate’ signs were a novelty!
We got to the Fort later in the afternoon, but we were able to tag along with the last tour group of the day. We checked out the artifacts and info inside first, before getting shuttled down to the Fort area. The shuttle was needed due to having a teen in a cast, on crutches… so know that they are very accommodating should you have limited mobility issues. (There was also a wheel chair available at the bottom, should we have wished to use it) All staff were friendly and helpful.
The Fort was neat experience and our guide was informative. Going thru the bunk houses and barns, blacksmith etc proved interesting & educational.
Worth checking out!

We were camping in Cypress Hills and looking for something to do. We did the auto tour to Fort Walsh. All of us grew up in southern Sask and never been to this hidden gem.
There is lots of parking. You walk slightly down hill to the main building to get your tickets for $10 to the fort. Inside this building there are things to look at and I highly recommend watching the mini film on Fort Walsh...very informative! The building has AC and a small area to buy drinks and snacks with tables and chairs inside and on the patio outside.
You walk down the gradual hill or wait for a shuttle van beside the building to take you to and from the fort. You can have a guided tour at the fort or walk around on your own and read the information at each building.
Outside the fort is a tepee where 3 native men spoke about the native history at the fort, the massacre and their family history. This was very interesting and hugely education for all ages. At the end of their not lengthy talk they played a fun game with the kids. The walk to the massacre site is about 30-45 away which we did not do but there is a new picture board at the parking lot showing you the site.
I highly recommend seeing Fort Walsh. You clearly understand the massacre, why the RCMP was created, why the RCMP training centre is in Regina and the challenges natives endured over many many years!

Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Also very knowledgeable about the history of the area. We travelled here with young children and they were very engaging with my kids and even played some outdoor games with them. When we returned to our vehicle we noticed we had a flat tire and the staff were tremendously helpful in assisting us with this. We definitely plan on returning and doing the longer hike at the Fort. Thank you all so much!

we took the back highways from Grassland National Park West block where stops for gas are few and far between, one at Bracken and Frontier but that was it till Consul. The scenery changes abruptly as you near the Fort as if you are in the mountains with switchbacks and altitude sooo beautiful. It was super hot that day and the building was AC it was a bit of hike down to the Fort from the main building where we took in a 15 min video so instead of going by the red chairs out front go the more gentle slope to the must see graveyard. Staff were the best we have seen and soooo helpful when i had heat exhaustion from it all. We were disappointed which was not the staffs fault that no period costumes or reenactments were being done but it was still very interesting
