Barron Gorge is spectacular and only a short drive from Cairns. I’ve come multiple times & used to bring friends here from out of town. It’s through this area of rapids that the Raging Thunder white water rafting tours operate. To get here is a 10 minute drive up the mountain from Lake Placid. Watch out for cassowaries as there were recent sighting signs when I drove up in February 2022. You can walk over the gorge to the hydroelectric power station (no longer open to the public) past Surprise Creek Falls and take in a birds eye view of the lower gorge in both directions from the concrete bridge. I love coming here as you get perspective when you look out into the cavernous gorge where you are a mere tiny speck. The gorge is surrounded by tropical rainforest in both sides.

Nice trip with family. Should try to see this when in Cairns. we enjoyed every minute here. You can drive or use the scenic rail/skyrail.

Lake Placid is an easily accessible tourist/recreation area in Barron Gorge National Park just a few minutes drive from Smithfield. It’s not actually a lake, but part of the Barron River - the river bulges out on either side to form a large lake like body of water (Lake Placid) before thinning again heading up into Barron Gorge towards Kuranda. For this reason crocs have been known to make their way upstream and therefore swimming is not recommended as the signs point out (there was a Croc attack on a stupid local swimmer in January 2021). There is a nice & easy short walk that takes you a few hundred metres along the lake through rainforest but it doesn’t continue to the end.
Adjacent to Lake Placid is an excellent pizza restaurant called Alessandro’s which offers fantastic ambience and traditional pizza & there is a convenience store selling groceries and takeaway nearby. Also nearby is the drive up to Barron Gorge where you can check out some amazing views and cross the bridge over to Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station. Well worth a visit.
Adjacent to Lake Placid is an excellent pizza restaurant called Alessandro’s which offers fantastic ambience and traditional pizza & there is a convenience store selling groceries and takeaway nearby. National park allows many beatiful mountain sceneries. main attraction is Barron Falls waterfall and histroical railway still operated for park visitors.

The Barron Gorge National Park encompasses mountains, trails and streams to show its splendor. The center of attraction is the Barron Falls which can be seen both from above and at ground level. Riding the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway gives a birds eye view of a much wider area that includes the scenery of the surrounding mountains, the thriving rainforest and spectacular sights along the horizon. On the other hand, disembarking at the Rainforest Boardwalk and walking to the Edge Lookout gives a much longer time and closer view to watch the shining silvery colored water falling down in between the steep hard rocks crisscrossing its way to the waiting stream below the valley. It has been mentioned that rainfall in this part of Australia is measured not in millimeters but in meters and the average annual rainfall in Kuranda where the Barron Gorge National Park is located is around 2200mm translated to 2.2meters of rain. That's definitely a considerable volume of water. Imagine the visual spectacle generated by this enormous display of strength from the big volume of water flowing down the vertical drop. We would love to be back in this park during the rainy season.

Spectacular natural beauty worth seeing while you're in the Cairns region. We travelled by car from Cairns, but if you don't have a car there's the option of taking the Kuranda railway from Cairns or gondola. The photo I've attached below is from the Barron Falls railway station which is within the National Park, it is certainly the most picturesque train station I've ever seen.

This National Park and the Barron Falls can be viewed from 1. the Skyrail falls lookout or from the 2.Kuranda train. It is rugged gorge lined with rocks and tropical rainforest. Most times the Falls are just a run of water but apparently in the wet season they are spectacular. We saw them from the National Park lookout in the dry season.

This is a short drive, through the Barron Gorge, following the river, to a bridge where you can view the Barron Gorge in both directions and a waterfall.
No water holes here where you can swim, just a view and maybe a bush walk if you’re in the mood.

This is spectacular! We approached from Kuranda and did the walk which views the Barron fall. Such a beautiful walk and excellent example of the rainforest. Must see!
