I am glad I took the effort to reserve the tickets several days in advance. I do not advance anyone going there without a ticket purchased online before that because there is no ticket sale on the day itself since the tickets will all be sold out. I went on a Monday afternoon on a lull period and yet it was full.

The exhibits are divided into 2 main sections on different levels. There are 105 exhibit areas. Please scan the QR and pay RMB10 for the audio guide. You will need to use your own ear phones.

I thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

One travel tip is to visit the Panda Research centre in the panda and then take a bus to Sanxingdui Museum as it takes only an to get to the museum from the Panda Research Center. After visiting Sanxingdui, you can take a short train ride to Jiejiakou in the late afternoon. You will reach jiujaikou in the night and can start to explore the magnificently beautiful Jiujaikou the next Monday.

I got back to Chengdu on the same evening after visiting UNESCO site, Jujaikou.

This museum in my view is as spectacular as any of the sights in China, including TheGreat Wall or the Terracotta Army. The Bronze Age Saxingdui were creating extraordinary artefacts that challenge the anthropological development in China as being a Han led civilisation.

In the morning, I flew from Beijing's Dahong Airport at 8:30 to Chengdu's airport at 11:45, and from there I had a taxi blast off for an hour and a half. We arrived at 14:15 on the expressway. Some places drop off suitcases.
We had to get out at 17:30 and get on the high railway, but it was free, so we could see it in 3 hours and take souvenirs and photos!
There are so many things to see. It's really worth a visit! There's nothing around, so it really feels like going for the Samsung Crown Museum.
There is also a direct bus from Chengdu.

The new museum is a knockout! A beautiful building with progressive halls showing the development of the Shu culture and showcasing the amazing finds of the excavation site nearby. The old museum building lies in the parkland behind the new building. Be prepared to see the best museum in China and to be amazed by the myriads of bronze forms and masks that fill the display halls. Unlike other Chinese Museums that I have visited this one is dedicated to one culture and the massive archeological finds at Sanxingdui. It is about 2 hours by car from downtown Chengdu and totally worth the effort. I hired a car and driver to make a day of it so the on the way back to Chengdu I could also visit the Jinsha Museum and dig site show casing the same culture in the inner suburbs of Chengdu. If you like history and culture this is the place for you. There is nothing else like this in China.

This is a very big museum with a lot of artifacts. The displays are well laid out in the museum which was only finished in 2023.

We went on a weekday but there were loads of people; this has become a very popular destination with locals. Be prepared to struggle to get to see the best pieces.

The artifacts date back almost 4,000 years and demonstrate how advanced the Chinese were over other races at that time.

This tour was made possible by appointment with @Chinahighlights Guide Fifi. From Chengdu we were escorted by private car one hour outside of the city to the museum site. The tour guide was respectively able to acquire my ticket for me. During the tour she offered so much background information. Fifi and I talked in the museum for over 6 hours about the history of the artifacts, local culture, ancient history and more.

This exhibition is a complete anomaly in the unique history of humans’ past. This exhibition is 10x more exquisite than any other I’ve walked through. See the exhibit, (三星堆博物馆) and try to let go of everything you thought you knew. All forms of line and shape are treated with new forms and new proportions. 6 1/2 hours later I’m a changed person.

#History buffs - enjoy it the whole day!!

Recommendations: pack light so you can move freely in the exhibition. There are water refill stations at the front gate. Wear comfortable shoes to see two floors of exhibited artifacts. There’s additional food vendors across the road if you want a snack after your time.

It is about an hour's drive from Chengdu. During busy periods, we recommend making a reservation online. To enter, you will need the actual passport you registered when booking, which will be scanned at the gate to enter the museum. The exhibits are burial goods excavated between 1300 and 1000 BC. Excavation work and research on the excavated items are still ongoing. The explanation of the exhibits is minimal, so it is best to request a paid guide (in Chinese) when you enter. It is unclear whether there are guides who speak Japanese. Alternatively, they rent out an audio guide that you can listen to with headphones for a fee, but this is only in Chinese or English. There are many exhibits, so it is best to plan for about 3 to 4 hours to see them all.

The 4 prized exhibits - a complete bronze statue of a man, a gold sceptre, a bronze knife & a bronze tree. The last one in particular, took 10 years to piece together. As the guide rightfully put it, many of the exhibits here are like pro level Lego, where the archaeologists have to piece together, without any manual or sample.

What makes Sanxingdui so unique and special is that after almost 100 years since the discovery of the first item, they've still yet to find any records of language and written literature, that could further explain the purpose of these items and makes it harder to trace the start of this civilisation and what happened to them (what ended them). So alot of what is seen and described by the guide are opinion-based / guess info. But I think that's what makes this whole place and museum so intriguing. Such expertise and finesse displayed in the artifacts such as the ability to carve drawings into fine, thin, gold plates, to cut thru jade without any real tools, at least none discovered yet. Hence many mysteries remain unsolved, un-answered. What's the mystical creature the man appears to be riding? What does the different hairdo or hair dresshead symbolise? What tools did they use to cut thru the jade? How did they communicate? Why the obsession with the prayers (what was unearthed appears to be used in ceremonial prayers)? What Gods did they pray to? Why did the civilisation end?

And because there were so many unsolved mysteries, the civilisation was once thought to be of alien descent. Very interesting museum, I enjoyed it very much.

There's also an area opposite the main museum where you can watch how the archaeologists work.

To travel to Sichuan, you must go to Sanxingdui, Sanxingdui is 20 minutes from Chengdu high-speed train. Sanxingdui's bronzes are well worth seeing, bronzes of various shapes. It is also to experience a very different traditional Chinese culture.
