After seeing Hongcun village in the morning I was keen for some nature and Mukeng Zhuhai hit the spot. It's a very peaceful bamboo forest, with the sound of crickets and streams a pleasant diversion from the tour groups in Hongcun. Mukeng village itself seems very nice, but it was incredibly quiet; a couple of bars looked inviting although I didn't go in. I spent about 90 minutes walking the loop from the ticket office.

You can get there and back on the number 1 bus from the West Gate bus station in Hongcun - they leave Hongcun roughly every half-hour, and leave Mukeng on the hour and half-hour until 5pm. Cost each was was 2 RMB, payable in cash or by scanning the QR code.

Mukeng village is cloistered within a bamboo forest in hilly terrain, so compared to more well known ancient villages like Hongcun, the bamboo is the main attraction. The small lake at the entrance surrounded by bamboo provides the first of many picturesque scenes as you walk through the hillside towards the village. The path is well worn by the villagers and should be quite an easy walk for most and reachable in about an hour. There is a restaurant as you enter the village and you can wander around this small village to get a feel of how the villagers actually live.

Fortunately, or not, Mukeng Village is not very popular, so one can spend a slow and relaxed stroll amidst the bamboo forests without the crowds and there are some nice photo opportunities here as well. For those visiting the more popular Hongcun Village nearby, do consider this as well.

沒有想像中的好風景,整個園區並不算大,玻璃吊橋的長度也不長,竹林與水潭及吊橋是這兒的特色,有順路可以去看看,但是C/P值不高。

If you visit Huangshan, it is undoubtedly to visit the mountain. However, no trip to Huangshan is complete without visiting the ancient villages. Mukeng Village is my favorite one to visit. Unlike the other villages where you will be surrounded by tourists, this place is so quiet and peaceful. Make sure you have comfortable shoes and layered clothes. You will not regret visiting the village. I don't regret visiting this village twice and if I get another opportunity, I'd have no reservations visiting a third time.

The village of Mukeng is nestled deep within a stunningly beautiful bamboo forest and has not been developed for tourism, so it forms a stark contrast to the other nearby ancient villages such as Hongcun and Xidi.

For this reason, however, there is no public transport that takes you to the Mukeng Bamboo Forest and you'll need to get a taxi. We'd recommend visiting Hongcun in the morning and then taking a taxi to the Mukeng Bamboo Forest in the afternoon, or vice versa. The taxi journey from Hongcun is only about 15-minutes long and should only cost about 70 RMB at most. It is the fastest and cheapest way to get there, as you can get public transport easily from the city of Huangshan to Hongcun.

The hike around the bamboo forest is not too challenging and should only take about 2 hours, although we'd strongly recommend taking the detour up to the top pavilion, as this offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Once you reach the entrance to the bamboo forest, you can either choose to turn left or right to begin the hike. We'd suggest turning right, as this will get the most challenging part of the hike over with first and it will mean you'll end the hike in the village of Mukeng.

The bamboo forest itself was featured during the famous fight sequence in the martial arts' epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", yet surprisingly hasn't been heavily developed for tourism. During our 2-hour hike, we had the forest to ourselves and only saw one other group.

As you get closer to Mukeng, you'll come across a small restaurant that sells refridgerated drinks and snacks. This is the only place we could find that offers food and drink other than the small store at the forest entrance, so remember to either take water with you or buy it at the entrance.

Please be advised that the village of Mukeng is **not** a tourist attraction; it is a regular village where people continue to live. It is thus the ideal place to witness traditional Chinese life in an ancient village, but equally remember to be respectful of peoples' privacy and try not to wander into someone's back garden like we did!

Lovely peaceful village in the middle of bamboo forest and tea plantation. This is a welcome reprieve from the massive crowds at nearby Hongcun and Xidi but misses none of the charm.

Very easy to find the entrance and from the gate it is about a 50 minute circuit around the main trail at moderate pace. Beware that taking the right path leads to some steep steps right off the bat.

The village is about halfway up and is not too big. Lots of character as it hasn’t been developed to the same extent as lower villages. Beautiful forested hills all around and excellent home cooking from fresh ingredients available.

Highly recommended for a half day detour in the itinerary.

We visited Mukeng Village during a weekday and right before May 1 holiday so there were no tourists. It is a long hike to the top of the hill where the village is set but you can take your time and trek up slowly and it’s not very steep until you’re near the top. You won’t want to rush anyways because every 5 seconds of the path, you will want to stop and take photographs. The surrounding bamboo village is so green, peaceful and relaxing you will want to stay for a day. There is a hotel and a restaurant and the food is amazing. It’s not fancy but the vegetables and chicken are so fresh. There are a couple of dogs that are super friendly and a mom with a baby and the baby is so cute and playful. We wanted to go just because it is famous for the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but then we were blown away by the serenity. I highly recommend you plan a full day to hike/photograph/relax in this beautiful, non-touristy village.

We visited in mid April 2017, and we were not the only tourists there, although the overall tourist density was relatively low. Overall, this is not quite an isolated village as one might think, although it was a quiet visit by comparison to other points of interests.

After paying the entrance fee, our driver dropped us off at a pavilion selling stuff that sits above the dammed end of a small pond. The circular return route starts off on the right (the trail proceeds uphill in a south-west direction, and returns downhill via a north-east direction) where your tickets are collected. Our experience walking through the bamboo forest was slightly marred by parents who allowed their kids up ahead to yodel, something that should be frowned upon at places where the point is to listen to the surroundings, and not use the environment as a sounding board to compose your own "masterpieces".

The trail flattens out and joins a narrow tarmac road, and not long after, you should come to the village. If you follow the most prominent path through the village, this will continue your return downhill journey (bearing north-east) to the start of the trail. We came across a small group of locals selling tea leaves and dried bamboo shoots by the trail. Thereafter, we also came across an abandoned store-front of some sort that adopted a rather unusual choice of a 'mascot'. A short while thereafter, you'll be back at the pavilion that marks the start and end of the trailhead.

Despite some of the track being closed, and the rain, this was a lovely quiet walk. It is uphill with many steps, but at the moment you return the same way so get the downhill too. The tbamboo forest is so attractive with leaves on the ground between the bamboo plants. Small pavilions give a place to rest and appreciate the environment.
