Please avoid this place at any cost. Instead you can try Padmdurg where there will be lesser crowd. Horrible experience of getting in and out of the fort. You are expected to wait in open boats for an hour minimum to get inside the fort. For getting out of the fort also there is a waiting time. Crowd is very indiscipline and can cause risk to the visitor.

The experience can be bifurcated into journey and the destination. Journey can be rated as 2 out of 5 as it is a very cumbersome travel and not at all recommended for senior citizens or those with mobility issues or parents with infants. The catamaran from jetty takes Rs.80 per person and once near the fort the passengers are shifted to smaller boats which are very basic with minimal seating arrangements. The boatmen take around 20 mins to explain the details of the fort while the hapless passengers swelter in the sun. Rs.50 per person is charged for this service. The disembarkement area is wet and slippery so need to be cautious and suitable footwear should be worn. Sunscreen and hats are recommended.
The fort itself is magnificent although not properly maintained. The view of sea from the top most levels is excellent. Washrooms are also available within the fort premises. Lots of walking is required within the fort so proper footwear is a must. The boats normally give 45 mins time for return which is just enough to cover the area at fast pace. The return journey again is a hassle with lots of crowds jostling at the embarkment area which is quite slippery.

You end up paying a lot of money (directly and indirectly) to see something which is not well preserved. Here are the costs I incurred

250 rs gram panchayat entry fee
200 rs parking charges
80 rs ferry charges
25 rs fort entry fee

On top of this, ferry people extort money from you once you reach the fort. They wont dock the boat unless everyone on that boat has paid.

200 rs boat mafia charges
100 rs while returning

After all this, you enter the fort which is ruined and not taken care by the archeological department. There is not worth seeing left inside apart from a few fresh water ponds and a few ancient weapons.

Boat mafia guys give you only 45 mins to cover a fort spread over 22 acres. So you can’t explore even 10% of it. They threaten to not take you back if you dont follow their rules.

Also this fort was NOT BUILT BY SHIVAJI MAHARAJ like wikipedia says. It was built by North African Mughals or Traders.

The fort is good .But the ferry ride is very dangerous they fill lots of people in boat and does not provide any life jacket on requesting the life jacket they say that they do not have it .After reaching fort gate you have to jump from the boat on the wet steps of fort which is extremely risky and it can cause foot fracture in case you miss the jump .Not recommend for senior citizen and children

Murud Janjira fort is around 55 km from Alibag. Ferry to the fort is available from Rajapuri village. While coming from Alibag by car, you will be charged 100 Rs and 20 Rs at the entry of Murud and Rajapuri village. Then you will be charged 80 Rs for Ferry ticket and 25 Rs for Fort entry ticket.

You have been charged so much money but once you are handed over with the Ferry ticket, nobody cares about how you will go to Fort and return back safely.

When you are in queue for Ferry, You will be assigned Ferry number and then you are only allowed to travel in the given ferry number to and fro. The ferry (without any life jacket) will take you to the fort entrance gate and you will see this horror. All impatiently waiting visitors, desperately wanted to return back but unable find the ferry assigned to them. It is very difficult for incoming passengers to get down at the gate due to so much crowd and no dedicated incoming and outgoing queue/area. Somehow you will manage to get into Fort and realise that Fort has nothing but the ruins. Finally, you will also become part of the same crowd at the entrance gate.

Not a single person is in-charge to manage the crowd. Ferry operators are only doing all pulling and pushing to get their passengers inside and outside the Ferry, provided the passengers can identify their ferries. The good idea would be to skip this Fort and visit many other available Forts in Alibag like Kulaba Fort.

The visit to this fort was one the best thing I did on my trip and it has been itched in my memory forever. This is an architectural Masterpiece and actually one can understand by visiting this that why this was undefeated. Surrounded by sea on all sides with an underground tunnel (currently closed)for people in those times to travel. The walls still stand tall after 1000 years. Inside the fort a fresh water pool with many fishes also is a miracle.
Difficult for old people to jump from boat to the entrance of fort especially with knee problems but still there are many people to help.
Visit the fort to listen to stories about it as I don't want to spoil the surprise.

While we visited Diveagar, we visited this place which is about 21 km away. After reaching Digi port there are ferry boats available which take you near the entrance and from here there is a transhipment to a smaller boat, which is actually not required. This creates an unsafe and crowded situation at the entrance to the fort.

Once inside the fort, there is ample space to move around and trek. Guides were missing inside the fort though there is an entry ticket charged by the Govt. The fort needs maintenance even for basic entrance as well as the removal of jungle and bushes. There are 3 old canons, two sweet water wells, a temple, a masjid, a mazar. One needs to climb 125 steps to reach the flag hoisting post and the view from here are breathtaking and provide great photoshoot opportunity.

Govt urgently needs to look into the manner of ingress and egress to the fort to avoid any mishap

At a distance of 21 km from Diveagar, 53 km from ALibaug, Murud Janjira fort is situated on an oval shaped rock of the Arabian Sea. Janjira fort is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India which has 19 round bastions still intact.

Originally this fort was a small wooden structure built in the late 15th century by a Local Maratha fisherman Chieftain Ram Patil to protect his people from thieves and was known as Medhekot. It was captured by Piram khan, a general of Nizam Sha of Ahmednagar. Piram Khan was succeeded by Burhan Khan, who demolished the original wooden fort and built an impregnable 22 acre stone fort in between 1567 and 1571. Later the fort was strengthen by Malik Ambar who was Abyssinian origin Siddi regent of Ahmednagar kings. From then onwards Siddi's became independent owners of this fort.

Specialty of the Janjira fort:

1. This fort has only one gate to enter inside and which is facing towards Rajapuri on the shore and can be seen only when is about 40 feet away from it. There is other doorway to the west called the Darya Darwaza, which opens into the sea and was probably used as an emergency escape door during those days.
2. The main attractions of the fort are the three colossal canons called Kalal Bangadi, Chavri and Landa Kasam. Once upon a time it stood farm and robust in defense with 572 Canons, but now only 3 canons can we witnessed. These Canons have capacity of 12 km range into the sea.
3. This for is known to stay unconquered in any fight until it was handed over to the Indian region after autonomy from the Britisher's. This fort was attached by Dutch, Portuguese, British and Maratha's, yet remained unconquered.

Tips for Your Visit:
1. Better to start your day early whenever you are planning to visit this fort. Start @ 06:00 am from your hotel and visit Birla Ganesh temple which is on the way if you are coming from Alibaug/Nagaon. Then have your breakfast on the way and then ensure that you are there at ticket counter by 08:30-09:00 as this is the best time to visit.. If you are coming here late then it will be too hot and you will not be able to enjoy
2. Wear Cap and light clothes as it will be very hot and humid here. Before starting your ferry journey take plenty of water and cool drinks with you as inside fort you will not get anything to eat or drink
3. If you are visiting this fort in group better to negotiate with ferry owners. so that you will get separate boat for you and also at cheaper rate based on your negotiation skills
4. Sometimes there will be heavy waiting period at Main entrance due to Crowd and also due to high tide and high water levels at main entrance. So be patient and consider 2 to 3 hours (Ferry start to ferry end) as your total scheduled time for this fort visit. If you are coming back early then you are lucky.
5. There are 2 big wells inside fort which are having sweet drinking water. This is one more mystery no one knows that how sweet water well is there inside Island in the sea

Best time to Visit:
Don't plan your trip in the monsoon as there is possibility cancelling ferry services due to high tides and rains during monsoon. Also don't plan in the summer season as you will get exhausted before reaching to the fort due to too hot atmosphere during summer. So Idle time to visit is Winter Season from October to March of Every Year. And also better to plan your visit in the morning hours.

Entry Tickets:
Municipality toll ticket: 100 INR/Vehicle
Gram Panchayat toll ticket: 20 INR/Vehicle
Four Wheeler Parking ticket: 100 INR
Ferry charges: 80 INR /Head
Fort Entry Ticket: 25 INR/Head

It was really amazing experience to visit this place. Ferry ride take more than 30 minutes and need to wait in queue for getting in as only one entry and exit point. One need more than 3-4 hours at least to explore everything in fort.
