The ONLY Karthikeyan Swami (Murugar) temple in Uttrakhand at a height of 10,000 feet where Lord is in Swayambu Rock form. Possibly the highest temple for Karthik Swami in the World. LOCATED IN KANAKCHAURI.
The trek is considered relatively easy as the path is safe and not too rocky. It is a 3km (feels more like 4 to 5 km) trek followed by around 380 steps in the end. The view from the temple is, needless to say, amazing - subject to weather conditions.
It is 40 kms from Rudraprayag and you need 5 to 8 hours including the car ride to temple. Definitely a highlight of my Uttrakhand trip.

The drive to Kanakchauri has outstanding views. DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE MAP, ask Locals for route. Google maps is wrong.

Good to have a Trekking stick to navigate the path and in hills to carry a raincoat as always. There are no shops once you start the climb until you reach the temple, and the only place to get food/buys some miscellaneous stuff is just before the temple itself where the priest is apparently stays.

In january 2020 before the covid 19 I visited kartikswami temple with my friends group and that was a amazing jounrey.
The temple seems to be over the clouds and the place is really so peaceful where you can see many kinds of birds and type of plants and trees in between the route to the kartikswami.

It's a 3 km uphill trek from Kanakchauri to the temple. The trek is not easy. Please carry enough water and snacks. People with knee problem refrain from the climb. Also travel in groups as there are bears.
But once you reach the view is heavenly. A gallery of Himalayan peaks wait for you.

Kartickswami a Temple of Lord Kartikeya located at the altitude of 3050 mtr. One can go from Rudraprayag by bus or shared Jeep to Kanakchori the gateway of Kartickswami a distance of 40 km . It takes 2 hrs and 30 minutes to reach there on the Rudraprayag - Pokhri route.Stay at any lodge for the night and talk to any guide for the next morning trek. We started at 4 a.m. in the morning. The road is full of pebbles and roots of trees. Everyone should carry a rechargeable torch and a stick for the trekking through steep uphill and dense Forest. Last part is very steep and have to cross about 50 stone steps to reach the temple areas. Sun rises at 6-20 a.m. When the rays of the sun appears on numerous snow clad peaks. One can see Bander Punch,Kedarnath dome, Meru and Sumeru,Choukhamba,Neelkanth,Donagiri,Nanda devi, Nanda Ghunti,Troshul in 360° horizon. It's a scenetilating views of life time. Best time of visit October to december. Two festival's held at June and November. The idol of Kartikeya is naturally curved from stone. One shouldn't forget to sip glass of Rhododendron juice at Kanakchori.

This Himalayan shrine is perched at 3048m ASL, at the end of a narrow ridge of a mountain. There is a small temple of Bhaironath,on the way to temple, a few meters away. The priests reside at a place half an hour trekking to the temple. You can stay there prior arrangement. It will help you to reach the temple to enjoy the sunrise & sunsets. No electricity, no toilets, simple basic things available. The priest allows tourist/ pilgrims to stay there against nominal donation. There is a huge round water- reservoir near the priest residence.
This is a spot where pilgrimage & nature are mingled together. You will be mesmerized to view the snow clad mountain peaks like Nanda Devi, Nanda-Ghunti, Trisuli, Meru-Sumeru, Chowkhamba Panchachuli, Kamet, Doonagiri Neelkanth, Bandarpoonch, and many more. The day of visit was cloudless, blue sky above, the place is so serene , calm, quiet, the velvet green tree tops below & houses in the village far below, an indescribable still photo, a panorama of 270 degree views of Himalayan peaks. . It was splendid in a word & we became spellbound. This temple is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, eldest son of Lord Shiva & Parvati.
We were the first devotees on that day. When requested the Head Priest for our puja, he was engaged in “Shringer” of the deity & advised us to move around the temple for the time being. We obeyed him & after sometime he called us & our puja was served to the Lord Swami. Kartikeya is being worshiped as Lord Murugan in South India. The temple is the abode of Lord Kartikeya , an idol of stone is being worshiped there. There are hundreds of bells hanging on the support. On the right of the temple was an “Akhand Dhuni” & on left another idol of Kartik along with his brother Ganesha & the peacock, his carrier in front. On the back, left side corner, was an idol of “ Bana Devata”, the forest god. The ringing of bells was heard from about 800m.But what is more to be here apart from pilgrimage, is the awe-some view of the Himalayan Peaks. You need not know the name of them. So far I have toured, there is none to compare with . If you are blessed with the boon of the Lord & the nature, you will never forget the extraordinary view provided you are to reach there before sunrise. You are to
Legend- As per Hindu Mythology, Kartik was the eldest son of Lord Shiva & Parvati & Ganesha was junior to Kartik. Once Lord Shiva told his sons that between them who will be the first to move round the universe , he will be worshiped first . Kartik obeyed his father & moved with his carrier to complete the job . In the meantime Ganesha took seven rounds around Shiva & Parvati saying he sees the whole universe in his parents, in Shiva & Parvati. Shiva was amazed at Ganesha’s wisdom & so Shiva honoured him & since then he is being worshiped first before any one. In the meantime Kartik came back & heard this & being despaired he sacrificed his life, the flesh to mother Parvati & bones to Shiva. Here is the spot where Kartik sacrificed himself. So the idol of Kartik depicts the bones here & pilgrims worshiped him.
In November, on Kartik Purnima , there is great celebration every year . Thousands of pilgrims thronged to pay their homage, apart from Kalash Yatra in the month of June that we witnessed here.
It is a trek of 3km from the base village, Kanak Chauri ( 2500m), 39km from Rudra Prayag , in the state of Uttarakhand on the Rudra Prayag Pokhri road through dense forest..
