The temple on top of the mountain gives you great views of mountains and clouds so you feel you are on top of the world. Looking down at 99 other mountaintops, misted by clouds, gives you a great feeling. There are busses taking tourists to the temples near the top but the best way to go is with a private driver and tour guide, for just 300 RMB or sixty bucks as you will get closer to the key attractions faster and get some good info about what you're looking at. Our guide got stopped by a policeman so we had to backtrack, walk for 100 yards, and hook up with her again on the other side of the checkpoint. There's a town close to the top and there's a shopping street beside a couple of the temple compounds way up there, selling Buddhist souvenirs, mostly, plus some snacks. There are hotels and restaurants close to the top. It's a Buddhist mountain or a mountain filled with Buddhist temple compounds, each one replete with impressive statues, beautiful temples, places to pray and place incense, and a few monks in robes. You'll take hundreds of photos and most of them will be fantastic. Plan to spend hours on top and dedicate a day to get there, exploring, and returning. The trip up and down the mountain features dozens of switchbacks with amazing views. Make a movie. Look for monkeys. What an amazing journey. Inspiring, breath-taking, awesome. It's not the highest mountain in the world but it's the highest one around so it gives you the impression you are close to heaven.

Devotees seem to like to build temples on mountains to be closer to the heavens. They like to struggle a little, climbing mountains to show their sincerity and devotion. So, for hundreds of years Buddhist pilgrims have come to Jiuhuasham (9 Lotus Mountain) to do just that. And there are reputed to be 100+ temples, in fact they are numbered.
Nowadays it's so much easier with buses halfway up the mountain and the cable cars and tramways but there are still steps and they are steep in some places. It slows the pilgrims down a little but it certainly doesn't stop them. I saw many earnest believers.
The mountains are spectacular, reminiscent of Huangshan and some of the temples are magnificent and some are ordinary.
I won't try to give directions. I went as a solo Western traveler, studied the maps a little beforehand but I just winged it really and it all worked out. Enough people speak English to help you and the employees were very professional and helpful. I have learned to do some preparation but to be prepared to change your plans,
So, in the end the temples and pilgrims are here because of the mountains but some stand atop and are even taller metaphorically and literally, It's a harmonious symbiosis.

The name of the mountain trail is Huatai Peak. Take the tram first to get to the beginning of the trail. It’s an amazingly long tram ride - about 20 minutes going over peak after peak. Also expensive at 160 rmb!! You can’t walk it. Too far and steep. You’d have to be a professional rock climber. The walking trail is a little steep at times but there are so many areas where you walk along the side of the mountain with high drop-offs. All safe as there are metal fences everywhere. They are made to look like wood. Anyone can do it and the photos are great.

If you go to the tourist center in Jiuhua Tourist center and they should be able to help you get there. I went with my Chinese wife so it was easy. But perhaps hiring a guide might work as well.

Certainly worthwhile.

One of China's four sacred mountains, a rustic and scenic spot from which to take in views of the Chinese countryside and modern religious practice. Watch throngs of Chinese citizens line up to buy incense, candles, and other paraphernalia which they use in making offerings at a series of temples, to which they rush one after the other as if completing a task from their employer. Torpid monks preside over collection boxes while reading newspapers, surfing the net on their phones, or smoking the occasional cigarette to relieve the boredom. Some just put their heads down and sleep. Horribly overpriced (US$8 for the monopoly bus shuttle to the town at top of the mountain, $30 just to enter the town, then another $25 to ride the cable car to the peak) and designed principally, it seems, to separate pilgrims from their cash. Views of the countryside and walks in the mountain forests can provide a sense of spiritual renewal that is hard to find in the venal religious practices on display.

I've visited twice since 2008 and still an amazing holy place to visit. Many Buddhist temples here, and the newest place established here is "Great Vow Culture Park" which located at the foot of Jiuhua Mountain that really worth to visit. Try to visit Tiantai Temple at the highest peak in there, you can see the beautiful natural scenery from here which can make you feel relax.
