Wonderful

Great staff and volunteers. The free tours are good and there is plenty to see in the Workhouse for all ages. The gardens and veg patch would probably be good in the summer, but by October, the beds were bare which is to be expected.
The coffee shop, although small, had a good range of drinks and cakes and seating inside and out.
Beware of the car park if there has been heavy rain. It resembled a lake when we got there!

Atmospheric and full of history!
aug. 2021
This is a very interesting piece of English history that has been preserved superbly. The building is extremely atmospheric and the effort that has been invested to keep original features should be commended. The car parking is easy and the staff very friendly and welcoming.

Engaging and creative displays keep you hooked
sep. 2021
This museum is so well curated. I loved the way that the information was presented in so many different ways at the workhouse, encouraging visitors to engage with the different artifacts that were on display. It was also interesting to find out more about Florence Nightingale, the different laws and reforms that affected people's lives and to see the more recent reconstructions of how some parts of the workhouse were used.

Some of the details in the displays were a hard read but that is the nature of the building.

The staff were delightful and the cafe was so good, we went twice during our visit.

Social duty to visit
okt. 2021 • Alene
Simply heartbreaking and a social duty to see. I found this to be one of the best "attractions" I have ever done. Compelling, interesting and so informative, I will come back again with friends for sure. This is Highly recommended.

Finding something to do
aug. 2021
On the way back from Scotland we called in here for a break, we found it very interesting and much better than we thought it would be. Staff were great and we ate at the café which is slightly different to the norm but good.

Evocative, superbly presented property in the best of NT traditions
aug. 2021
This was my first visit to an attraction since everything closed down and it reminded me of how I've missed them.

Most rooms are presented in their restored form but others left bare as they were found when the NT acquired the property. Information is written onto bed clothes and recreations of old outfits as well as accessed via a handheld device you hover over big dots.

I found the recent history of the workhouse particularly interesting. Part of it was used as a women's refuge in the 1970s and a bedsit has been recreated from that era. The workhouse strongly evokes all its various guises and uses, eg the infirmary where there's now a cafe. It really makes you think about sometimes conflicting Victorian attitudes towards punishing and helping poor people.

You will be offered an exterior tour. I went on it and slightly regretted it. Interesting in parts but a little slow, lasting 1:15. I was short for time and subsequently had to rush some of the rest of the rooms.

Changed my mind about Oliver Twist

Worth a visit if you are around the area. Entertaining guide debunked the Dickens version of a workhouse, but would not wanted to have stayed in the day.

Historic site with lots of information
sep. 2021 • Alene
I went for Heritage open day. Big building so a lot of walking. Alternative route if you can't do stairs, arrows were sometimes a bit confusing. Interesting if sad history, a bit too pristine for the conditions people lived in. Friendly staff, some in costume. Cafe and outside seating area. Well run, felt safe, lots of space. On site parking.

Interesting & different NT property
aug. 2021 • Par
This austere building is an important monument to social care from the 1830’s until relatively modern times. It’s a big property and there’s lots to see on several floors. You get a personal audio device which you scan on codes scattered around the building to get history and context. There are also friendly well informed staff. The majority of the rooms are as they would have been in the workhouse era, though some of the upstairs bedsits are as they were when last used in the 70’s. The building is deliberately lacking in decor, though not in interest. Well worth a visit if your interested in social history.

An eye opener
aug. 2021
The workhouse has a very interesting history, the walk round has stations to put a small hand held tablet on, which then gives extra information about the room/item you are in/at. In addition there are written displays & guides to assist your understanding. Well worth a visit.
