Oleg Mityaev once wrote the song “My Friend”, which contained the following lines:
“And now I don’t like big cities
And I want to live in a lighthouse more and more...”
The topic of lighthouses is very close to me, although I am 100% a land person. But, finding myself on the shore of something with salt water, I immediately begin to look around in search of a cylindrical or faceted “body” with a lantern at the top that has shot up into the next sky - a LIGHTHOUSE.
Therefore, finding myself in Sri Lanka, remembering that this is a bare island state surrounded by ocean waters, I immediately began to wonder - where are the lighthouses here? Despite the fairly decent size of the island - something like six and a half million hectares - it is “guarded” by only 14 lighthouses!!! If we take into account that the length of the island’s coastline is 1340 kilometers, then we get one lighthouse for almost a hundred miles...
It just so happened that the first on my unusual “lighthouse” route was the Barberyn Island Lighthouse - the Barberyn lighthouse (which, by the way, a number of sources call it the Beruwala lighthouse). All previous lighthouses encountered on my routes were built directly on the shore. But the Barberin lighthouse is an island lighthouse, built on the island of the same name. Just some three hectares of land - a piece of land covered with lush Sri Lankan vegetation at a distance of just under a kilometer from the coast, right where the decent-sized city of Beruwala is located (on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka).
I read that this settlement was founded by various traders who landed their ships on this section of the coast, which is why the city got its name, which translates as “the shore where the sails are lowered.” As you understand, the name of the lighthouse comes either from the “name” of the island, or from the mentioned nearest settlement. Like most of the lighthouses of this island-state, Barberyn Island Lighthouse was built during the period of British colonial rule, in 1889, and is a cylindrical stone tower tapering towards the top, 34 meters high.
Window openings are cut along the “body” of the lighthouse at different levels, and the corresponding equipment for supplying light signals is installed on the top. There are only four lighthouses in Sri Lanka that are classified as international, and
The Barberin lighthouse is one of them. You can easily get from the city to the island by boat - there are plenty of natives who want to take you on the choppy waves of Oceanus Indicus. I read that climbing to the lighthouse is prohibited.
But on tourist sites I came across information that local ministers are ready to meet your wishes for modest money. And so it turned out. The lighthouse height offers stunning views of the surrounding area. So I definitely recommend getting to know Barberyn Island Lighthouse!!!

It was a poya day, my mom woke me up and told me that, we were going for lunch at my uncle's place. I didn't want to go really, but my mom insisted, but today I'll tell you, if I had not gone, I would have missed and regretted for not being on that piece of land.
Once we reached our uncle's they were having a discussion to go on a picnic and have lunch there. I had no cue, I was just lost. In the end all the family board members came to a conclusion, and the decision was, we will be spending the rest of the day on that piece of land. For me personally, I have never stepped my foot on that piece of land. I was so excited and a little bit nervous.
We came out, the sky was blue and clear, and that was a definition of a good day. As we carried everything we reached the shores of Beruwala, Maradana Beach.
Once we reached there I saw a lot of boats docked on the shore. My excitement was raging!
Now wear your life jackets, we are going to take a boat ride to an island which was called "Welmaduwa" in Sinhalese and the Dutch called it "Barberyn". Some call it Crows Island. But on this present day, it is called "Barberyn Island".
We got on to the boat and we were off the shore from the land. The sea was calm and clear similar to the sky. It was around ten minutes boat ride. As we got closer and closer my eyes were widen. Once we reached, I was astonished and mesmerized. It was a piece of utopia, which was away from the mainland.
There were already two families prior to us. As I got down from the boat with the help of my brother, firstly, I stepped on concrete then I removed my foot wear, when I saw the grass. Quarterly the island was covered with coconut trees and I saw a lot of crows and that was the first impression of the Barberyn Island. As we walked looking for a good place to set up our picnic, I saw a few exotic birds, cows and bulls roaming around the island. And we found a perfect spot and we made up our mind to settle down there, the cooling shade and the grass made it a perfect spot.
This is a must if you are on Barberyn island, getting on top of the roof of the lighthouse. I wouldn't miss out looking at that monument with my bare eyes.
The lighthouse tower is built on the cliff on the island. As we walked towards the tower plumeria flowers caught my eyes. Once I reached the tower, I had to rest a little bit, afterwards I noticed two to three cottages, then only I got to know there were glfew people who were in charge of the lighthouse, and they take turn to watch the lighthouse. They explained a lot of things about this monument. They told that this was built by the British in 1889 to help direct the sailors.
Then we got the permission to go on top of this cylindrical monument. Once he opened the door we got inside. I saw a staircase which was going in a curvy way till the top. As I rushed myself to the top, I opened the door, a slight breeze caressed my face. On one side I could see the shores of Maradana and on the opposite side there was no land to be seen.
And that is when I got to know, "when a fish cries in the ocean, the sorrow doesn't reach the shores."
It was a day well spent, the sun was about to set and the time came to depart.
Barberyn island, you have been an absolute treat till next time! Thanks for being a part of my travel journal.

Very pretty, fairytale mini-island, which can be reached by a 10-minute boat ride. You can get a ferry from fishing boats in the adjacent harbor. It is advisable to get a local person to help you negotiate the price. Luckily, this meant we only paid 1000 rupees per person. Otherwise it would probably have been three times as much. For another 1000 rupees you can climb the lighthouse and enjoy the gigantic view. This is particularly recommended at sunset. Overall, a very nice trip that we would happily do again.

Have been lucky enough to go to Barbaryn Island, and would recommend to anyone staying on the west coast. If you enjoy scavenging, there is enough food you can find in the shallow rock areas to cook on a BBQ. Mussels, rock oysters etc. Take plenty of essentials such as water etc with you as there are no facilities on the island.
