Why don’t Historic Scotland put the wooden drawbridge back? Wouldn’t be difficult. We had a picnic there for an hour and saw over 30 people nearly break their necks jumping across the open hole that leads to the castle. How somebody hasn’t died there amazes me.

Walked to the castle from our rented property in Tocavaig. Parking is always a problem on single track roads and the road through Tocavaig is no different but some space can be found close to the beach a little further on from the castle.
The castle is reached via a track leading to 2 properties some 300 metres away and a sign is attached to the main gate.
The castle cannot be accessed as the drawbridge is long gone and the gap has a 40 foot drop, take care!
There is no charge, and views are spectacular on a clear day.
Not much of the structure is left but the stairway that led up into the castle can still be seen rising from the arched access bridge, and a small portion of the curtain wall is visible.
As other reviews state this castle should be protected by Historic Scotland.

I knew about Dunscaith Castle because of its connection to Sgiath/Scàthach the Celtic warrior woman who once lived and trained other warriors at the site according to some legends, while others just say the place was named after her. Either way, it's a beautiful, magical place in the middle of nowhere and I love it that way. I almost don't want to write a review because I'd like to keep it quiet haha I mean, yes, it would be nice if an organization could take charge as the caretaker and do a better job with upkeep of the site, but it makes for a cool experience being as wild as it is. You can park on the road near the gate then walk down the drive, past someone's home (keep this in mind and be quiet/respectful!) and then out to the castle. We got slammed with a squall on our way out and sought shelter below the castle bridge against a wall, which worked quite well haha then we had fun exploring the ruins and nearby cliffs. Truly such a beautiful location. Careful crossing the bridge - it's missing a floor ;) but you can scoot your way across on the edge pretty easily. Remember to do your own research on the site, as there's no informational plaques or anything.

This is a spectacular castle which came across by chance. It is worthy of signs and now having read reviews that there were more things in the area, that is a huge disappointment. Difficult drive to get to area to park to walk to castle but is worth it.

Stunning place - just wish historic Scotland would do more in promoting this site

We only stopped on the turnout to view the castle, as it was raining (surprise!) and we did not have the inclination to walk all the way out to the point. The view is is beautiful and worth a few minutes tranquil stop.

It was absolutely beautiful, though the crossing to get over the drawbridge to the ruins was interesting. All the boards have rotted away, so you have to scoot along the edge, over a roughly 9ft drop. Not for the faint of heart! Got there fairly late, so not much of a sunset, but the view was still amazing, and poking around the castle ruins was a ton of fun.
(Lost my beanie there though :( if anyone’s out there hiking and finds a knit beanie- it was originally a dark blue- please let me know! I’m willing to pay for shipping to get it back, I can’t get another one, and it was my favorite. Ryan.a.robson99@gmail.com)

Absolutely gorgeous and out-of-the-way. It’s like a tucked away secret. Utterly beautiful surroundings. No great sunset for us as it was cloudy, but the wind was minimal so we could sit on the cliff and enjoy the view.

We went out here on our heritage tour and it was a highlight of our Scotland tour.

We got out of the car at Ord, next to the beautiful beach, and walked along the cliffs to the castle. Took nearly two hours, and was quite arduous, but it was a fun adventure and allowed us to see more of the nature and to visit the old, stone-cottage ruins along the way.

The castle itself is hardly there anymore (we didn't manage to cross the bridge, not for lack of trying), but the setting is romantic and picturesque, and there's the funniest resident sheep living there.

The last road out is a bit of a nightmare, though.

Le Dunscaith Castle est une ruine mais les lieux sont trés beaux et méritent le détour pour en apprécier l'estétique.

It is a bit of a drive to get to Dunscaith Castle, but it's worth the drive and the fifteen minute hike it will take you to get to the actual castle which is a very interesting and photogenic ruin. You can also cross the moat if you are feeling particularly adventurous by inching along a narrow ledge to get to the steps into the castle proper and to look over the top of the castle ruins and down the loch. If you choose not to cross the moat, the walls and location of the castle on the rocky outcrop still are very much worth the visit.
