Spectacular and at the same time intimate and different. One of the most special, also rarely visited given the difficulty of access (4x4 road preferably).

One of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. No doubt this is known as the most beautiful waterfall of the whole Europe. I really liked the unusual location the waterfall is located. There are ateast 3 waterfalls here if you count the thinner ones as well. To reach here you have to drive in a gravel road for about 6,7 km. You must go on a 4wd vehicle as there were many patches in the road and even a small water stream crossing. We visited in October and then the upper parts of the road was covered with snow. So be extremely cautious if you are not running with wi ter tires on. And when seeing the waterfall be extremely careful to not to go towards the edges. Your life matters most. 😉

Haifoss is one of the 2 truly unforgettable hikes within 2 hours drive from Reykjavik. The other was Glymur.
There is a parking lot, probably big enough for 30 cars. The views of Haifoss and adjacent Granni waterfalls from up above are immediate and simply spectacular on a sunny day.
If you have good fitness level, please do yourself a favor and hike the 1-hour down and get to the base of the waterfall. It is a bit steep and unsteady on parts of the trail. I would rate the hike moderate in terms of difficulty and there are no death defying moments going down the foot laden trail. Few will make the trip down there, so once you make it, you can have the views all to yourself and have a lifetime moment.
Warning, as you enter 332, there is a warning sign that only 4x4 vehicles are permitted despite it not being an F-road. The drive to Haifoss is about 4 miles on rough gravel. Unless you have an SUV, I would not advise driving on this road with a sedan if you decide to heed the warning. It was a very sunny day and it had not rained for a week when I went, so I thought the gravel road was manageable despite lots of bumps along the way. However, I drove extremely slow, about 15 kph because I didn't want to risk the rocks chipping the rental. To be honest, it was a very uncomfortable 30-min drive to get between 332 and the parking lot. When cars came near me, I stopped completely to let them pass.

We drove 1800 miles in Iceland over 2 weeks and saw all the major sights and this is one of my very favorite. This is a series of several waterfalls that plunge into a canyon. You can see them from the top of rim. We hiked down to the bottom and had a fabulous view from down there. I highly recommend!!!!! Fortunately, Google maps alerted us to the turn off as it is not marked from the paved road. The road is a gravel road off the main road. Fortunately, it is not too long of a drive on the gravel road.

easy to get your first view of this tall waterfall. a fine mist in the air has an incredible rainbow. there is a short hike down to the base of the falls, although fairly steep over a short distance and you'll need to climb over a fence where a ladder is placed. we went in early June and there was a section of snow we had to cross on the hike down. the road out to Haifoss is rocky and fairly unkept and low clearance vehicles should stay away

Fenomenale. Gratuito.

Just amazing! This waterfall is not to be missed if driving toward Landmannalaugar. Its only a short detour and well worth the effort.

Hi, I´m a solo driver that will be traveling the Ring Road on a 2x2 car. I wanted to visit Haifoss / Gjain end of August but I read that I shouldn´t with a 2x2. What are my options? Would hitchhiking be an option? I can´t find a tour that I could join.

Is it possible to drive to Háifoss? How many kilometers of hiking? Thank you
Skrevet 22. mai 2019
Hey, thinking about joining a tour for Haifoss. But, Google does not provide any. Could you pass few options? Thanks. Thinking to visit at end of July or mid September. We are group of five adults.

When I was at Haufoss, there were no busses. They have a very hard time making the trip. I saw a motorcycle, helicopter, numerous rugged cars, but no busses. I even saw local guides in 4wd cars ferrying people from their street cars from an area a few miles away. That is an option, but the best option is to rent a capable car and drive yourself.

Hi, I'm interested in hiking to Haifoss. Is this possible, or is it only accessible by driving up the bumpy road? If it's hike-able do how long does it take? Thanks

From Stong it is about a 20km hike to the top of Haifoss - a big ask. However, there is a walk to the base of the falls from Stong, following the river upstream up the valley, about 10km.

I would like to travel from Haifoss to Gullfoss.
On google maps it show that after leaving the road to Haifoss I can turn left, go north on an unnamed road. There is a break in the road near Tindfjallajökull and then it continues and turns into 349 near Tungufell. By break I mean I can see the road but google maps does not recognize this section as drivable.
On my International Travels Maps of Iceland, it shows this route as an unpaved seasonal road.
We will be driving a (highly insisted upon by my husband) Hummer.
My question is: Would we be able to drive through this unnamed, unpaved seasonal road in early August?

From Hotel Gullfoss it took us about 2 hours. It's a very winding road in the higher parts so speed is not a factor.

I'm wondering if it is possible to get to Haifoss with a 4x4 vehicle in the first week of April?
Skrevet 13. januar 2017
if you'll get haifoss with 4x4 you won't any problem. don't worry. in august we will get it with ford focus :)
Skrevet 19. februar 2017
Because I have been reading different opinions about this, I'm still having a lot of doubt and questions.
We will be traveling to Iceland next summer (Juni-July 2017) and we rented a Ford Fiesta with full insurance.
Is the road so bad you need a 4x4 car? Or is it possible, but you just have to be careful? Some say you can, others say you can't...
We really wish to see this amazing waterfall.
Is there a special guided tour to this area?
Thanks!

We just drove this today...there are a lot of really large rocks and big pot holes on the road and it's not a short drive either (I'd say about 15-20 minute drive). If it is wet or raining, I don't think you could get up there in a car. Also ground clearance is kind of important in a couple spots. If it's dry (as dry as possible for Iceland), then you could try in a car if you go REALLY SLOW and be VERY careful. It's not a dangerous drive but you could find yourself stranded if your car can't make it. I would get a 4x4 bc right next to Haifoss (you'll see a sign pointing towards it when the road comes to a T), you can go to Gjian which is well worth it as well!
GOOD LUCK!!!

hi!! it's nicolò, how many km we should do to get to waterfall by walk? we have a hundai.... not 4x4... hope to hear you soon
Skrevet 21. august 2016
hi! 9km! i suggest you to use car...don't worry about the road...if you are gonna skip the holes you will get the waterfall...
Skrevet 19. februar 2017
Skrevet 19. februar 2017
Is it possible to drive to the waterfall in a 4x4 at the very end of May? I'm going to be in the area on the 27th of May.
Skrevet 18. mars 2015
no problem 4x4 and also no problem with ford focus in august... enjoy! ;)
