Just came back from fshing at San Carlos Sports Fishing - it is all that it is cracked to be from giant Tarpon (one caught was over 7' long and estimated at over 175 lbs) large snook and even a massive gar! Boats are good, guides are excellent and the food is really fine. Now if there was only an easier way to get to their odge than the 6 hour drive down from the airport.

Highly recommend!

Had 3 full days of fishing. Landed a few 100+ pound tarpon and hooked into a good few more. So fishing was great! And the guides were really helpful good guys.

The lodge is rustic and a great place in my opinion with great food.

Totally recommend this place.

We went with another couple and all four of us were disappointed with lots of things.

The fish did not bite the entire week we were there. We went for tarpon and saw a few roll but didn’t catch any. We jumped one tarpon but it was gone before the guide could get the rod. In 6 long days of tarpon fishing we never touched the rod. The couple we were with had two bites (one stayed on for 30 seconds, the other for 3 or 4 minutes). Other guests at the lodge had similar stories. While we were there, we counted 19 tarpon trips and not one tarpon was brought to the boat. Only 3 were hooked. I think the web site far over rates the number of tarpon there. I think I remember the website saying that the 12 year avg. is 3 fish to the boat per day. 19 trips with 0 caught, come on now, really? On the last day we gave up and went to the islands. Caught a few pan fish but they were pretty small.

The staff is very hard working. They put in long hours and really tried to have us catch fish. Many of them do double work (guide and chef, captain and mechanic, captain and security, kitchen and housekeeping). We did have a problem with poor communication which was not due to language (time for meals, travel plans, who, what, when, where type questions). Phillippe was a personable host but was in poor health and not available much during our trip. His 2 sons (in their early 20s) Allen and Alex were in charge.

The food is mostly excellent. I recommend the fish or chicken over the beef or pork given the option. If there is something you would specifically like for any meal, just let them know ahead of time. My husband asked for banana bread. The lodge has no oven but they ordered the banana bread from a bakery on the mainland.

The room is sparse but fine. Clean but need quite a bit of maintenance. I thought no A/C would be a problem for this menopausal city girl but it wasn’t too bad. Our fan was loud with one speed (high). The cold showers are very cold. Towels but not washrags provided. There isn’t much lighting. Electricity is solar power during the day, generator in the evening and we did not have electricity from midnight until dawn each day but that wasn’t a problem. Take a flashlight. The rooms are not quiet; you can hear your next-door neighbor’s conversations, footsteps of anyone walking on the deck and all types of wildlife. Because of poor fishing we went downriver to Sabalos Hotel for one night. they even hired an extra captain more familiar with that area for us. A nicer hotel and had welcoming hot showers but the fishing there was the same.. We were told to take just our necessities but while we were gone to the other hotel they came in and boxed up all our stuff and put someone else in our room. When we got back the room hadn’t even been cleaned. Dirty towels on the floor, dirty sheets on the bed and toilet paper in the trash can. Our stuff was locked in Alex’s room and we could not get it until he returned from fishing.

Wifi is spotty. Basically it was if one of the captains were there he would turn his phone into a hot spot. Fine for checking email or posting a few pictures but not for any real research or long-term use. Mosquitoes were bad around dinnertime. Be sure to spray around sunset.

In Managua they reserved us a room at the Best Western right across from the airport. The drive from the lodge to Managua is 5 hours (not 3 as reported on the website). The hotel in Managua was excellent and we got to shower and relax before flying home.

Perhaps our review would be different if the fish had been biting or if Phillippe had been in better health but none of us want to go again.

The folks at San Carlos Sport Fishing were wonderful-the meals were terrific, the staff very friendly and accommodating and our fishing guides were wonderful. We went for the jungle scenery and the tarpon fishing. We ended up catching a ~60 pound tarpon and a ~10 pound snook (dinner that night-delicious!). That tarpon was the epic fight I wanted-easily 5 times the biggest tarpon I had ever caught before! We also had hits from 4 other tarpon that were likely >100 pounds.

The river views were wonderful as well, seeing monkeys, cayman, exotic birds etc. The lodge is very rustic-electricity flickered frequently, fans needed in room to stay cool, mosquitoes near the water at the lodge, cold water only in shower, even a small earthquake tremor one evening.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience with my daughter-great memories!

We booked this accomodation for 4 Nights with a special Package. We left after 1 day because nothing was organized, Kajaks were not there .... The location is great. But we could not enjoy the place, the room was dirty and the bathroom was not acceptable.
Better to stay in San Carlo City.
