I think the mosque is well worth seeing. You don't have to spend the night in Larabanga, a half-hour stopover is enough. Our driver called a local guide for us so that we wouldn't be harassed from all sides. I was very moved by the building and its strangeness. It's a shame that you're not allowed to go inside, you can only look once and not see much, but I find it very exciting from the outside with the old baobab. We paid the 40 cedis entrance fee, we donated 200 cedis to the community and gave 50 cedis voluntarily to our guide. We also bought 3 pots of shea butter for 80 cedis each... and yes, that may be a lot in total, but it didn't make us poor. If it keeps the mosque and supports the community, it's worth it to me and the shea butter is really great and very cheap.

I traveled to the North exclusively to visit Mole National Park. Before going there I found the website of Leclara Organisation: A small local organisation which offers guided trips to the Mosque, through Larabanga and the Ecovillage of Mognori as well as Damongo. You can find their website easily when searching for Leclara and Larabanga. The website prices are outdated, but everything is still very very inexpensive for european wallets.
On a whim I booked the Larabanga and the Mognori Tour. It was one of the highlights of my visit.
Mr Abusco is a teacher at one of the local schools and started the organisation for the betterment of his and the surrounding villages. He is a very friendly and obviously well-known person who gives his best to let visitors have a well-rounded and interesting experience.
We chatted with villagers whilst going through Larabanga. He guided me towards the Shea Butter Production, we visited a school shortly, he told me about the programs to help education of girls and the implementation of health programs for women and children.
And of course: The Mosque.
The Mosque. A place to behold. Such a small, but gigantic building. I know - everyone says stuff like that- but to be seeing this still used building of such big significance for the people and knowing it has been here for hundreds of years... it really touched me.
I can highly recommend visiting this Mosque with Leclara, as you also get a feeling of village life, backgrounds on community living and also the possibility to be a small part of a great Community Organising effort.
Mole Hotel also hires guides and they are nice and all - I recommend going the extra click and calling Abusco.

Great tour with the chief imam. Villagers make sure the mosque is kept in its good state, so it will remain for another 700 years. The tour was informative and interesting. Recommend!

A very touching history. For many years this mosque was build in the year 1421, by a moslem cleric name Yidana Ibrahim.

Just outside of Mole National Park this mosque is very interesting and there are local guides who can give you the history. Photos are allowed but only Muslims can go inside and only women over 60. But the outside is certainly worth the trip

Interesting and lovely hearing the history of the mosque and seeing it in person. Alas, visits inside are not permitted.

I visited the mosque as part of my stay in Zaina. It was unique and beautiful. Spent just enough time to take pictures.

We visited during our stay at the Mole Reserve.
The mosque is quite an interesting building but it's tourist potential has not been maximised. For starters, an exclusion zone should be created around it as it is almost totally engulfed by surrounding homes. The external are of the mosque was not tidy and litter could be seen everywhere. The local guides weren't professional. Part of the building is understandably weakening and there doesn't appear to be any effort to repair it in a way that preserves it's original look.
Ghana Tourist Authority has a lot of work to do.
