Kalavantin Durg is at Prabalgad, with an approach road from Panvel. The trek is difficult with steep climbing towards the end of the fort. You can easily climb half way but need to be an expert trekker to climb to the top

“Jasa Dista Tasa Nasta Mhanooch Sara Jag Fasta” is a very well-known quote in Marathi.

English meaning of it is - Things are not what they appear to be because of which the whole world gets fooled.

Reasons for using this quote:

1. Misconceptions are created in mind after seeing the video & photo of Kalavantin Durg on youtube, google, watsapp.

2. In many of the reviews on Google as well as Tripadvisor, it is exaggerated out of proportion:

a) Dangerous risky trek with steep slope of 80 degree

b) People with light heart, vertigo / height phobia & blaa blaa blaa etc not to visit this place

c) If one slips, no escape.
It is applicable only for those who are insane without any basic common sense

You visit the this durg & I guarantee, all above misconceptions will be crystal cleared forever.
That’s why I used Marathi quote for the title of this review.

I visited this durg with many misconceptions & strategy to cope up with any danger or risk.

Upon visiting Kalavantin as well as adjacent Prabalgadh I blew flying kisses to the Kalavantin Durg from foothill.

I will happily revisit Kalavantin & Harishchandragadh few more times.
These two are the best out of many treks I did so far.

One of the friend from our trek group said he wish to take his both (4th & 12th std) kids to this trek. I told him I am unsure of the trek on risk part after seeing it’s videos & photos, so hold your younger son this time. After our visit we will decide to take him to Kalavantin Durg trek next time sure. After return I was surprised to see his younger son who has grown to very good height & immediately told him had I known this thing then I would have surely given a nod to you to take him also for the trek. Further told him that his younger son is free for trekking any fort here onwards.

Now coming on to the actual helpful tips for the 1st time travellers to this place from Pune.

A) Simple Route With A Distance Of 105 Km From Vishrantwadi To Thakurwadi.
Old Pune Mumbai Road. We started by car at 6.00 am from Vishrantwadi & reached Thakurwadi at 8.30 am

Vishrantwadi – Lonavala – Khopoli – Chowk - Shedung junction – Belvali – Vardoli – Thakurwadi (Parking area for Kalavantin trek)

NB: Three loot maar (Toll) post on this route:

1. Before Pratishirdi Shirgaon
2. Kusgaon
3. Shedung

Travel for 500 meter from Shedung loot maar (toll) post & take right turn at Shedung junction & follow main road that will take you to village named Belvali, Vardoli & finally to parking area of Kalavantin trek. Less than 5 km distance.
You will find it frustrating to find this route information on google or map as google does not fetch Thakurwadi.

B) Parking

Ample parking space available for all types of vehicles with a fee of Rs.50 for car.
Photos of parking area are attached.

C) Food

In the parking area there are two local food stalls that serves Pohe, Vada Paav, Maggi, tea, biscuits, water bottles, cold drinks, lemon juice, sugar cane juice, kokam sharbat, cucumber, wafers, chips packets. They will prepare lunch also on prior order booking. We had pohe for Rs.30 per plate & wada paav for Rs.15.
There are snacks stalls on complete trek route till top of both the trek i.e. Kalavantin & Prabalgadh.

Prabalmachi is a small village of 40 houses at the base of Kalavantin & Prabalgadh from where the trek gets diversion.

Mahalaxmi Hotel is the diversion spot from where left straight road to Kalavantin & right road to Prabalgadh. I have attached the photo of Mahalaxmi Hotel spot with it’s food menu.

Good restaurants are available at the start of Prabalmachi village & at trek diversion point.
They will provide veg, non veg on placing order.

We had lunch of veg bhurji & rice bhakari at hotel named Nihar at the start of Prabalmachi village.

Doube egg bhurji – 3 nos. – Rs.40 per bhurji, rice bhakari – 6 nos. – Rs.20 per bhakari, pohe Rs.30, maggi – Rs.30, water bottles 2 nos. Rs.30 per bottle, it costs Rs.300.

Be happy, food & water is available on this trek to a good extent. It is not a concern at all.

D) Accommodation

1. Tent accommodation at a price of Rs.500 that includes tent, mat for sleeping, blanket (chaadar), one time meal & breakfast. I have attached photo of tent with tag.

2. If you wish to save money then contact few villagers who will happily give you overnight accommodation free, provided you have food (dinner, breakfast) at their place & you only pay for food.

On Kalavantin trek route we met one such a noble soul his name is Hari Wagh his contact number nine nine three zero zero one zero nine five nine. At Harishchandragadh we used this option for overnight stay.

Be happy, accommodation is available on this trek route. Like food and water, it is also not a concern at all.

At half way of trek, you will come across very 1st hotel cum restaurant named Samarth Krupa Dhaba.
It also provides tent accommodation, veg & non veg food, snacks items.

If you have your own tent or bedding arrangement then also it is ok. You can stay at ample empty space on the plateau of Prabalmachi village.

E) Best Part Of This Trek - Washroom facility (Helpful especially for girls / ladies)

If you eat snacks or food at Samarth Krupa Dhaba then washroom facility is free otherwise Rs.10 for visitors to use washroom facility.

Nihar hotel also has washroom facility. You can ask them for use of washroom. They will provide you free use of washroom irrespective of having snacks / food at their hotel. I guess. Mahalaxmi hotel will also be same like Nihar I guess.

E) i) Kalavantin Trek (90 to 120 min)

We started at 9.00 am from parking area & reached Kalavantin top at 11.00 am.

Trek route:

1. Graded slope road till Samartha Krupa Dhaba (while descending) we used this route. (upto 30 min). Photo of trek road is attached.

2. Short cut little steep slope road (while ascending we used this option). This route took us to Samartha Krupa Dhaba. This is a bit tiresome. (upto 30 min)

3. Samartha Krupa Dhaba to Nihar Hotel, graded road (upto 15 min)

4. Nihar hotel to Hotel Mahalaxmi, graded road (upto 15)

5. Hotel Mahalaxmi to Kalavantin Prabalgadh junction, uptrek slope (upto 15 min)

6. Kalavantin Prabalgadh junction to Kalavantin top, uptrek on mountain slope (upto 15 min)

a) Rope at start

b) Steps of 600 mm height

c) Rope at the end (locals from village are helping trekkers to climb thru knotted rope as well as rope ladder). Rs 30 per person for rope use.
Photos are attached of the knotted rope & rope ladder.

Then we travelled back to Hotel Nihar for lunch.

ii) Prabalgadh Trek (upto 90 minutes)

1. Hotel Nihar to Mahalaxmi Hotel to rocky mountain patch start (upto 30 min) plain road plus uptrek

2. Rocky mountain patch, a true tiresome uptrek, (upto 20 min) Your legs might pain next day morning.

3. Rocky mountain patch end till Kalavantin Durg view point (10 min)
We were short of time so could not go to 4 rajwade, ganesh temple, kala buruj.
If you have time then do visit this.

4. Kalavantin Durg view point to Hotel Nihar

F) Important Tips To Save Time If You Are Planning For Kalavantin as well as Prabalgadh Trek On Same Day

Choice is yours to visit 1st Kalavantin or Prabalgadh.

Please note the following:

While heading to Kalavantin from Hotel Mahalaxmi spot (the diversion point for Kalavantin & Prabalgadh), at halfway distance between Hotel Mahalaxmi Spot & Kalavantin Prabalgadh junction there is again a diversion spot. The right turn leads to the starting point of mountain rocky patch of Prabalgadh thru a food stall with a blue color tarpaulin. It is a straight road on mountain at some height.

a) If you are descending down from Kalavantin then take left turn from this spot to Prabalgadh.

b) If you are descending down from Prabalgadh mountain rocky patch, come to the food stall, from food stall take right turn to Kalavantin instead of descending down to Prabalmachi village.

G) Amazingly Mind Blowing Things:

1) Helicopter / Drone view of Kalavantin Durg from Kalavantin Durg view point on Prabalgadh
I have attached it’s photos.

2) 270 degree views from the top of Kalavantin Durg. I have attached it’s photos.

H) Conclusion

There is no danger as well as no risk doing this wonderful trek. Anybody who is 3 feet & above in height, physically fit to walk, trek & climb rock of 10 feet using rope or rope ladder with mindfulness can do this trek happily without any hesitation.

This is the fort where you can travel happily without carrying anything with you for a one day trip. You can travel on any day of the week to this fort immediately after rainy season, winter & early summer. The road travel is easy & so is trek from the point of not getting lost.

Forts are to be avoided during rainy season as there is severe fog that blocks all around views.
During rainy season it is truly risky and dangerous from slipping point of view.

Photos attached in this review are tagged with easy-to-understand description in line with this review. Please see the photos for better understanding & more clarity.

Hope I have provided you all the right information to plan your trek in the best way to this wonderful place with availability of all basic facilities.

This wonderful trek will surely leave you with wonderful feeling.

All the best.

Had a great trek. This trek is easy actually than it looks. Started at midnight and climbed the hill around 6:30am. The view surrounding the place was awesome. Try to spot the Bollywood star Salman Khan's farmhouse, it's clearly visible.

From the base point (in the village of Thakurwadi) to Kalavantin Durg and the Prabalgad Fort, the trek to this adrenaline-sparking fortress take about a little over three hours and is accessible by zigzag stairs carved into the edges of the rocky mountains, with swathes of scree and no guard rails or ropes. The trail gets notably steeper and vertigo-inducing on the way up – though this doesn’t deter those in pursuit of heart-pounding adventure – but jaw-dropping views and beautiful scenery on the way up make the trek all the more worthwhile. Expect to catch a glimpse of the tiny waterfalls south of Kalavantin Durg

This trek is almost 4Hrs long from the base village. You need to Park your vehicle at Thakurwadi village and start you ascending from there.
There is one check point made by forest department where you can take a guide with Nominal charges. There are refreshment stalls available and in the next plateau there is one big place where you can camp or order food.
There is one bisection after 1.5 hrs of trek and you can either trek to Prabalmachi or Kalavantin.
From the base it tool almost 1 hrs to reach top of Kalavantin where Ropes are available to reach the top. View from the TOP is fascinating and its a must do trek for every Enthusiast.

1st of all don't trust Google for location.
Start your trek from Vardoli.

It's a difficult trek, takes approx 4 hours of to&fro.
There are multiple checkpoints where you can halt and have water, nimbupani, kokam sharbat etc. The view from the above is awesome.

Machi Prabal is the base village for two of the best treks around Mumbai. The place is located in Raigad district and can be easily reachable from Panvel.

How to reach Machi Prabal?

Take a train to Panvel and reach out to the Panvel ST depot, which is on a walkable distance from the railway station and it takes 10-15 mins to reach ST depot from Railway station. Train tickets may cost you around 30 INR from Kurla railway station. From Panvel ST depot take ST bus to Thakurwadi, which is the actual Base village for this amazing Trek. Journey to Thakurwadi may take 35-50mins and it costs around 20 INR for a single journey ticket. The last bus to Thakurwadi is scheduled for 7:20 PM, if you missed the last Bus then there's the other option of Private Auto-rickshaws. Auto-rickshaws may take around 200-300 INR to drop you from Panvel to Thakurwadi. Trek to Machi Prabal starts from the point where ST drops you and it takes 1hr to 1½hrs to reach Machi Prabal from that point. One has to pay 50 INR to the entrance gate. On the Machi Prabal, there are few Hotels, which can provide Tents, rooms and Food on affordable prices. Their Chicken Thali costs around 160INR and Veg Thali costs 130INR, Thali includes unlimited food. They do serve some other food items.

Machi Prabal is the base point for the Kalavantin and Prabalgad. It takes 1-1½hrs to reach Kalavantin from Machi Prabal. One can choose to experience early morning trek and witness the Sunrise. Various forts can be seen from the top of Both forts. There are marked arrows to guide you throughout the Trek.

Kalavantin Trek:-
Overall it's a moderate trek and can look difficult to climb. Though the climb is simple for regular trekkers. Only on the last patch, one has to climb up using rope, it looks difficult but can be easier than it looks. Do climb the final patch, you won't regret it. Darr Ke aage Jeet Hai. One continue their trek by choosing Prabalgad, as it's beside the Kalavantin fort and it may take only few hrs to climb up.

Final descend from Kalavantin to Thakurwadi can take around 1hr to 2hrs. Reach the same spot and take ST bus for Panvel, the last Bus from Thakurwadi to Panvel is at 8 PM.
