We took a road trip to Landour in the first week of 2023. We started at 10 in the morning from our hotel (Claridges Residence) in Mussoorie. Mr. Gaurav Chauhan the General Manager at Claridges was kind enough to lend us his motorbike - Royal Enfield 500 for this trip. Even otherwise one can rent a scooter or bike for upwards of Rs 500 for the day. The journey itself was quite short and it took us not more than 10 minutes to reach our destination. Along the way, the views of the valley below were quite spectacular.
We parked our bike in front of a shuttered shop and explored the town on foot. We had heard that the popular story writer, Ruskin Bond lives here and that added to the charm of the place. The first and in fact the only place there is to see is the Landour Bazaar. It is a serpentine road that is little wider than a path that meanders for about a kilometre with small shops on either side. There are a lot of souvenir shops and local eateries vying for your attention and we stopped at one such eatery that claimed to be the only authentic pahari cuisine joint in the neighborhood.( Hapur Walon ki Dukaan)
We had to wait patiently for lunch while the owner Mr. Pankaj Agarwal with the help of a lone helper put together a lunch thali. An unusual thing that we noticed was that everything was cooked in brass pans and served in copper utensils.
The food itself when it was finally served, was quite extraordinary, the thali had about 21 small katoris, each with a different pahari delicacy. I had never tasted anything like it. And the best part of this small restaurant was that there were only 2 tables and no crowd. And that could be safely said for the town itself. Though so close to Mussoorie, it is surprisingly free from the hordes of tourists that crowd the hills. Apart from the Bazaar, Landour has only the sunset point that attracts tourists, though the town itself has some famous residents notably Sachin Tendulkar who owns a couple of properties in this town.
The road from the Bazaar to sunset point was quite tough to negotiate for a first timer like me. The gradient was very steep and the temperature quite low compared to the town. We reached Char dukaan, a sort of landmark before sunset point after about 15 minutes of rough climb ( for the bike). Char dukaan is a corner place with 4 small shops selling maggi and hot beverages. We didn't stop here because it was getting very cold and we had to see the sunset.
The sunset point is barely 5 minutes away and it was full of people all wanting to click pictures. The view of the mountains from here was amazingly beautiful (pics attached). But as it was getting chillier by the minute, we made a hasty exit.
While one is in Mussoorie, a trip to Landour would make your visit memorable.

Someone has quoted a very interesting thing for Landour, 'If I woke up in a stupor and was airdropped to Landour, it could be 2015 or 2025 and I wouldn't be able to tell!' It is completely true.

Landour is a quaint little cantonement town in the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 2200 meters. A twin town of Mussoorie where time is frozen taking you all the way back to the British Raj. In fact! It owes its birth to the Britishers in early 1800 s. That's why you see a lot of structures which reminds you of a colonial era.

Rokeby Manor - a 175 years old heritage home restored as an awe-inspiring English-style Country Estate hotel, a lovely English cottage homestay La Villa Bethany, a beautiful St.Paul's Anglican Church built in 1839 with stained glass windows and many old cottages built in a Tudor style.

Landour is so magical and laidback that you can decide to do nothing and yet not feel guilty about it. Either sit in a balcony overlooking snow clad Himalayan peaks of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Bandarpooch, Yamontri, Gangotri and a Doon valley with a steaming cup of ginger, lemon and honey tea in one hand and a book in the other oblivious to the ticking clock or go for idyllic walks for hours on the trail lined with Pines, Deodars and Oaks. Silence around is so profound that only thing you hear is a gusty wind whispering to the tall trees making you embrace your woollens more tightly or the birds chirping gaily or the dry leaves crushing under your feet. Scents of wild flowers tantalize your senses as the cool breeze passes by. All you can see till horizon are Shivalik hills and lofty Himalayan peaks playing peek a boo in the mist. If you are lucky then on a clear day, can witness a 'false sunset' a phenomenon seen only here and in Switzerland.

There are literally two places in Landour where all the economic activities happen. Char Dukaan consisting of a post office, two general stores, a cafe and Sister's Bazaar with its iconic Bakehouse a charming place for its amazing bakery items and A.Prakash & Co. a grocery store which sells some yummy in-house jams, cheese and peanut butter.

On the circular path of Landour, a board hanging on a tree announces, ‘If we liked noise we wouldn’t live here, if you like noise you shouldn’t be here.’
Landour is a perfect pitstop for your life to refuel oxygen for your lungs and peace for your mind. It's a home to the likes of Ruskin Bond, Bill Aitken, Victor Banerjee, Tom Alter and many more. Experience Landour. Take a break, relax and rejuvenate for your journey ahead in life. Afterall, it's one life. Make it richer not only with the bank balance but also with lot of such invaluable experiences.

Paved figure 8 roads with few cars or cycles...a huge contrast to the town below. Watching the sun hit the snow-capped Himalaya in the distance and then slowly filter through the trees, this walk is a highlight of the area. Worth huffing and puffing to get up to if you're not already staying up top at Rokeby Manor. It is a little slice of something different than the narrow congestion of Mussoorie or the smog of Dehradun. Enjoy!!

one of the best ways to get away from the traffic, noise and cacophony of Mussoorie is to come to landour and have some quality time with your loved ones, perhaps take a long walk, in the meadows and rejuvenate your senses. very peaceful and calm area, surrounded by some beautiful structures to take pictures with.

Where Mall Road in Mussoorie is over crowded, landour gives you perfect resort. Peaceful, scenic and clouds over your head is what makes this place awesome. It is also famous for char dukaan, Lal tibba, Landour Bakery House, church and rockby manor (visit for awesome food). I love it.

This is much down to earth market than Mall and perhaps also much less visited by tourists on a short visit. There are a few good souvenir shops, shops of house hold items, An office of Survey of India attracted my attention but I was not allowed to go inside or take photograph.

Instead of roaming on mall road I thought of having a look at Landour bazaar and I did loved it.
Brought few chappals and sandles and they were handmade by people living at Landour.
There is a sweet shop from where I brought farsan which was awesome and it's like a lost recipe of that place very near to clock tower.
If u want to peacefully roam around this is place to be
