Established in 1965 by exiled Tibetan monks who had fled to India from the Mindrolling Monastery in Tibet, this monastery is today one of the largest Buddhist centres in India. It is situated a little outside of main Dehradun city, in the quiet green surroundings of Clement Town. The monastery buildings spread out around beautifully landscaped gardens, with some of the areas being open to tourists. These basically consist of two separate park-like areas:
1. The Giant Buddha Statue: This huge gilded statue stands tall in a garden, with a path leading all round it. The path is lined with rows of prayer wheels which you can rotate (always only in a clockwise direction) to enable prayers to rise upward. There are larger prayer wheels in pavilions, and beautiful flowering shrubs around.
2. The Giant Stupa: This is the larger of the two parks, and consists not just of a gigantic stupa (built between 2000 and 2002), but also several other structures, including a huge gilded statue of Guru Padmasambhav; eight stupas made in eight different styles; various pavilions housing prayer wheels; a Rolls Royce that was gifted to the Dalai Lama and used by him for several years; and a statue of Yangchenma (Saraswati). Each of these is explained in highly detailed signboards at the entrance. A beautiful statue of a ‘White Tara’ stands at one end of the park, commemorating a member of the community at Mindrolling.
No entry fee is charged. Please remember that since this is a religious space, appropriate demeanour and clothing is expected.

The monastery is located at a distance from the main city, but regular autos are available nearby for convenient transportation. It opens from 10 am to 6 pm and offers a spacious area for strolling and meditation in its large hall. A prominent feature is a very large statue of Lord Buddha, which is quite impressive.
Additionally, there is a souvenir shop on-site. Outside the monastery, there are several small restaurants selling Tibetan foods, adding to the cultural experience. The parking space is quite large, accommodating visitors comfortably.
Overall, you can easily spend 1-2 hours at this beautiful monastery, capturing many photographs and immersing yourself in its serene ambiance.

it's a large temple complex with shops and other displays. The whole complex is quite interesting to explore and to photograph. It seemed to be a bit far outside of the city.

Given it was Buddha Purnima, visited Mindrolling Monastery (10am-5pm), one of the largest Buddhist centers in India. We also bought a wind chime from here. Local cafes here serve good Tibetan food outside the monastery. The Monastery is huge, peaceful and very calm. The murals and stupas are very unique and magnanimous. You can spend a lot of time sitting or walking around the gardens. You will also see the car gifted to Dalai Lama situated there. Nice place to visit for some peace

If you haven’t visited a Buddhist monastery before then you can come here but if you have visited any other monastery, then you can skip this one. The place has a huge meditation hall which you can enter with no shoes. Deposit shoes at the counter below the flight of stairs which you have to climb to enter the hall. The place is visited by not tourists to Dehradun so be prepared for a lot of crowd especially on weekends. The place does have awesome momos but only veg so give it a try. You can also shop for the usual Buddhist knick knacks was souvenir for friends back home.

The Mindrolling Monastery in Dehradun is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. There’s an impressive 35 metre high gilded statue of a standing Buddha. There’s also several stupas which you can climb up to get a birds eye view of the whole complex. The monastery is outside of the centre of Dehradun, though straightforward with the local transport.

Its very peaceful and the lawns are so well maintained. The best part is the life lessons written on boards all along the path to the main temple.

Hi,
I wanted to know what are timings when the monastery is open from morning to evening or there are definite hours. Also how far it would be from Rajpur road.
Skrevet 6. juni 2016
I don't think there are any particular timings. I went thrice. One at 6 in the evening, then 8 in the morning and then 12 in the noon.
It will take about half hour to reach there from Rajpura Road
