Watch what they charge you. We were charged over $300 for 2 beers, think they put the . in the wrong spot. Accidents happen but when you try and talk to them about it after the fact, they dont want to know. Dont anwser emails and say there is no issue at their end.
Hot springs are nice, accommodation average.

The one dot is for the most delicious Tomato Basil soup I've ever eaten, and for their food growing program. We stayed there in mid to late September in a Bear Family suite. I had been warned it was rustic. I was not warned it would be filthy. Upon arriving and unpacking, my brother-in-law (who doesn't like shoes and socks) went to put on shoes for dinner, and his feet were black. They did not start out that way. Not merely soiled, black. It took him quite a while to get them clean again. The floor had obviously not been cleaned in a lo-o-ong time. While taking a shower, the multicolored molds were not enchanting. I put my hand on the wall to steady myself, and it was SLIMY. All of the shower walls were slimy. Again, not cleaned at all in a long, long time. These two things left us questioning the cleanliness of the whole place. Every time we tried to heat up water in the microwave, the electricity went off. We had to continously reset the breaker, which, after the first time, a very prompt maintenance worker showed us how we could do it. I really wish I had taken pictures. The whole building really needed some maintenance, structurally, electrically, and cosmetically. Upon touring their hydroponics operation, we were also treated to a tour of their brand new arsenal of 3D printers, so they can make their own over-priced souvenirs. That money would have been better spent on some of the above issues. As other reviewers have pointed out, due to the isolation of the property, you are at their mercy. The restaurant was adequate, except for soup as noted above, with mediocre to bad service. Of course, the surroundings were beautiful. Unfortunately, it rained the whole time we were there, so no Aurora. There are a lot of places to see the Aurora, so unless you really want to partake of the waters, skip this "resort." It is much more like the scout camp I attended as a child, but our leaders made us keep it a lot cleaner. Anyone who wanted to put in a competing facility would not have to work very hard to out-do Chena Hotsprings Resort. I am 62, and this only my second negative review I've left anyone.

It is in the middle of no where but we knew that part coming into it. And that is apart of visiting this vast state. But going to the hot springs into that locker room was so disappointing and disgusting as though there is no pride at all. If you take this venture, DO NOT forget some sort of sandals. And for the kids - that pool was so nasty. Dozens of hairs floating in the water. Overall, they need to clean up their operation.

Soooo touristy… not big into the touristy attractions. If you are… do it. If not and you would like a Hot Spring Experience… go to Aleyaska.
We still had fun and it was affordable but ehhh about the actual attraction.
We also did the ice museum. It was a lot of hype but not actually an outdoor igloo and they are in the process of fixing sculptures. If you need to kill time do it but honestly I would bypass the half day trip- there and back from Fairbanks and find something better.

This was a great day trip activity for my family from Fairbanks. We drove ourselves (I'm glad we did, it was an easy drive) as opposed to hiring a tour company to take us. I've not been to any other natural hot springs in the world so I don't have much of a comparison, but we thought it was pretty neat. We got there before lunch time which I think was wise. It seemed to get pretty full in the early afternoon. Plus, this was a great day to get home and take a nap before doing a northern lights tour that night. We stayed in the water for a couple of hours and had lunch there, plus the drive to and from Fairbanks, so it was about a 6 hour excursion. The hot springs is set in beautiful and relaxing scenery. The water is of course, pretty hot and there are hot spots throughout the water. We were surprised at how large the area was, but again, it was fairly crowded in the afternoon. It is a natural hot springs so there's some degree of algae and debris in the water but that doesn't bother us. We also swam in the pool for a little bit to cool off and relax, it was nice. There are showers and soap in the changing room to clean off before you dress. The suit dryer in the lobby was nice to have so we didn't have wet suits to carry around for the next day. If anything, we would have stayed longer and done some nearby hiking if we didn't have other family members with us.

The is a review of an ATV tour that started and ended at the Chena Hot Springs Activity Center. Some of the ATVs (Suzukis) were old and not well maintained. All had rev limiters that made them as "speedy" as 3-hp go-carts (remember them?). The trail wasn't all that long, but did involve a fun stream crossing. Most importantly, our guide was cool and wanted us to have fun. Without her, my rating would be lower.

My friend and I planned our trip to Chena for months--it was to be the high point of the year ... possibly of the decade. I mean, read about it: hot springs, glorious scenery, northern lights (aurora borealis), fantastic food, friendly people. We were SO excited! I'd called in advance, explaining that I'm in a wheelchair—hey, no problem! It was expensive but worth it, even including air fare from Denver, and a rental car. One lodge was (supposedly) wheelchair accessible, but my caregiver had trouble getting me up the quite steep ramp. The dining room and gift shop were, minimally, accessible. And nothing else. Walks weren't clear ... no way to get to the hot springs ... no way to get to the viewing sites for the northern lights. And Jules, the owner/manager, while kindly allowing us to leave early with no financial penalty, said casually when I asked, "No, we don't have to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act." Really? Since when? I was SO disappointed ... talk about all dressed up and nowhere to go!

Terrible!!! No communication, no directions; just a muddy road and people wandering around trying to figure out where to go. The ice museum was very cheesy and poorly constructed with very rude employees. The restaurant was 5 star prices with 1 star food. After overpaying for food and the ice museum, we decided not to give them anymore of our money for the hot springs which is what we initially traveled hundreds of miles to see. Our son is an Alaskan resident and refuses to ever return there again. ABSOLUTELY THE WORST EXPERIENCE!!!

My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights at Chena Hot springs resort. Sept 17th - 21st. . Overall great experience but it reminded me of glamping instead of a resort. Very remote so if you want food its either the resort restaurant or little store/giftshop on site. We stayed in the one of the Fox rooms. The room was small but clean, had 2 queen beds, small bathroom with shower and separate sink area near door. Room does not have microwave or refrigerator so if you bring your own food there is no where to store food that need to be kept cold (the rooms in the lodge might have refrigerator and microwave). There is a microwave in the activity center in a separate building that can be used. The grounds seemed a bit rough looking in places (maybe because it was September and it had been raining) Over grown grass, dead flowers in certain areas, fence falling down around a hot spring that is not in use. Areas of the parking area have big holes.
PROs
- surrounding area has beautiful views of mountains.
- hot spring/pool area is very nice
-Parts of the grounds around the resort were pretty
-Majority of the staff were wonderful. Only 1 rude person was the hostess of the restaurant that worked the night we went to eat at the restaurant.
-Several activity options available to do on site. We did Northern lights tour (I highly recommend this) and tour of the geothermal power plant which was interesting.
I can't say there was any major cons just maybe inconveniences (no fridge o r microwave in fox rooms) and its extremely remote I recommend renting a car and driving to the resort. Unless you like hiking and are staying there for more than a day or 2 you might run out of things to do. I would consider staying a day or two at Chena in the future.

Some reviews point out the negatives about this resort and some are accurate. But there is so much good that offsets the shortcomings in our opinion.
We enjoyed the quirkiness from rusty cars and farm equipment being used as planters and art pieces, to a DC6 airplane on pillars (not yet a honeymoon suite), to train cars on a siding, to a giant metal fish mausoleum.
Housekeeping is short staffed. I don't clean my home daily so I'm okay with it. If you want clean floors, take off your shoes because they won't get cleaned.
When our door would not lock, the repair people responded quickly.
Mostly there is no internet or phone service. The prices for everything (food, drink and activities) are very high but think about where they are located.
The activities staff are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They advised us on walks to take, told us where to go at night for good viewing of the aurora, explained that the dog cart rides weren't working as described. They also operate the ATV rides and guide the ice museum tour and the greenhouse and geothermal tour. These activities were fun. The ice museum drink is served in a martini glass made out of ice. I paid the $21 because it was amusing but it turns out I liked the drink. Indulge!
There is one activity that I have some reservations about. The night time excursion up to a yurt for aurora viewing uses SUSVs. Ten people are closed into the passenger vehicle which is separate from the vehicle with the engine. The windows are minimal and seating is tight. It is not good for people who are claustrophobic. I wasn't sure I could open the door if it became necessary. The ride to the yurt was described as "bumpy". I'd describe it as "jolting" or "bone-jarring". I was afraid it might damage my spine since I have osteoporosis. I think I'm okay but it was not good. However, just before we gave up for the night due to rain and cloud cover, the sky cleared and we had an excellent view of the aurora.
Our walk along the "nature trail" was beautiful with autumn colors and we saw a moose.
The hot springs are a delight. The temperature varies around the open-air springs depending upon the location and activity of each spring. There are showers and lockers for preparing for and following your soak. I went in every day I was there. It didn't matter what the weather was.
There is just one restaurant at the resort so sometimes the service is slow. We enjoyed some of the meals. Others were just okay. The scallops and salmon were outstanding.
Keep a sense of humor, be flexible and enjoy this unique resort.

I have read mixed reviews. Have an upcoming trip and wondering if it’s worth it. Open to just going to the hot springs or if a room is available, staying overnight.

The hot springs were included in the cost of our room, but you can come as a guest for $15 adults plus $5 for a towel if you want one.
Yes, during the summer months there is a small RV campground open. I'd book ahead, since it is a long ways out there only to find out they are sold out.

Can't speak to driving at that time of year but the road is in good shape and open year round. You can rent a car or I'm sure there are tours that can take you there

Folks have mentioned it is about an hour drive from fairbanks. They then mention that it is a difficult drive. I will be there Sep 15th and renting a car. Is the drive difficult because of road conditions, or elevation changes, or non-paved roads, or winding? Can someone please clarify what makes the drive difficult from fairbanks if it is only 1 hour or so? It would help in case I need 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Only a difficult drive if it snowed a ton or there’s ice on the road. I’ve driven Cheena for over 20 years and only went off the road once in a blizzard. September should be great.
